In the 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age of art saw the emergence of Judith Leyster, a remarkable talent among the era's Dutch Masters. However, her contributions were long overshadowed by misattributions, with much of her work being credited to Frans Hals or her husband, Jan Miense Molenaer. It wasn't until recent discoveries that Leyster's true place in art history was solidified. This blog post delves into her life and a specific self-portrait at the National Gallery of Art, revealing her journey from obscurity to recognition. Judith Leyster, born in Haarlem in 1609, was one of only two women admitted to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in the entire 17th century. Despite her early success and owning an art studio, her marriage to Jan Miense Molenaer in 1636 marked the end of her career under her own name. Her death in 1660 led to her art being unrecognized for nearly 200 years. The blog post also explores the societal and legal factors contributing to the misattribution of her work, highlighting the challenges women artists faced in balancing family and career, and the complexities of attributing collaborative works.
