Yes, I think I'm an introvert. I'd rather be at home on the couch with my dog or in my studio with my dog making art. Or writing. However, there's this thing in life called money that seems to be a necessity unless you want to live in a shack in the woods. But then you'd still have to eat and have medical care and buy stuff to wash with and clothes to wear so we do need that thing called money. Which means we have to be out in the world doing stuff and taking care of those basics. Even the introvert needs to get out and take care of life. If there are people counting on you then it's pull up those big girl pants and just get it done. Some days it's easier. Some days it's not. But it's always exhausting. For an Introvert to be "on" all the time takes a lot of energy. When it's over and they get to go home it's all they can do to hold their head up and not just collapse. Mentally and physically spend. The well is dry. It's time to recharge. How does an introvert recharge? They go to their safe place, their happy place. Could be turning on the TV and zoning out on a favorite show or pulling out that favorite hobby and putting all their attention into it. Maybe they take a hot bath or just a nap. Each has their own way of coming down to normal again and, if you live with that introvert long enough, you'll see it. How do you handle that introvert hiding in their safe place? How do you draw them out? Easy answer. You don't. Leave them be and let them recharge, clear their head and come back when they're ready. Sign me, Introvert on the inside

It has been the fastest summer ever, hasn't it? One fun thing I did was make tiny art to give away on Free Art Fridays. After participating in a few community and school art hunts over the last couple of years with my students, I started thinking about the kind of art I wanted to give away. Many artists who participate in the FAF movement have nicknames and recognizable logos or street art inspired characters. I decided that my favorite part was the surprise of finding treasure and I added the exciting element of opening a gift, so I decided to go with the project name "Check the Box." This way I can experiment with different kinds of art inside the box, and even collaborations with other artists, while keeping it uniform with the recycled, stenciled boxes - mostly matchboxes, gum/candy boxes and CD cases. Here are a few pieces I dropped at the Free Art Decatur art hunt in June, and a few finds, too. I also ran into a teacher from Chattanooga that I have been collaborating with - it was great to meet her in person! She had drops of her own and from her students to share from Tennessee. Artists and hunters use social networking like Twitter and Instagram to leave clues about the drop spots and also to thank the artists when the piece is found. The next pieces you see will be dropped in New York City by a lifelong friend of mine who visits NYC regularly because she's the smartest person I know with a super cool job there. I've never been there, but I've always had a feeling it would be my favorite place! I have also sent a few pieces to teacher friends in a few other places around the US, and even in my neighborhood's own Little Free Library :) I am really happy to have learned about the Free Art Movement and I am loving being a part of it. My students have gotten a real kick out of it too. It really gets to the heart of what it's all about for me.
First and second grade artists looked at Paul Klee's painting "Groom's Arrival." Students pointed out how the shapes made a figure and shared what this figure made them think of. Paul Klee was a Swiss-German artist who was most influenced by the Expressionist, Cubist and Surrealist art movements. We discussed Klee's quote "A drawing is simply a line going for a walk" and that "A line is a dot going for a walk." Here's a video of more of Paul Klee's paintings. What words come to mind as you observe his work? Students created their own pieces by taking a line for a walk across red construction paper, then looking for closed shapes to fill in with construction paper crayons. Some students found faces, figures or animals in their shapes. This lesson provided us with an opportunity to discuss what high quality work looks like when coloring with crayons. Check out our work inspired by Paul Klee's "Groom's Arrival!"
I found this powerful quote about creativity on Pinterest : I bet a lot of us can relate to what Mr. MacLeod is saying. I certainly can. Creativity, whether we are pursuing it or still trying to find it, usually takes a backseat as we deal with everyday life -- getting good grades, paying the bills, raising the kids. But we crave it. We need it as a means of self expression. This week on the blog, let's explore ways on how to be more creative. After all, creativity is turning blah into TADA!
I believe we're all are unique and have our own style and creativity. Some of us just show it more than others. It's impossible to not have any creativity in you because we weren't created for this society. This society is man made so people that say they have no creativity just haven't found it
