This is a color study that Mary Blair did for Disney's Peter Pan. Mary Blair was a strong force on the Disney look in those days and her influence continues to this day, not only in Disney but in nearly all animation and children's illustration. A master of color design, setting mood and environment, she was never confined to "realism" but rather used color more on an emotional level. For instance, go back and observe the color of her sky in her illustrations and note how the colors make you feel.

Mary Blair (1911-1978) is probably best remembered for her work for the Walt Disney Studios. She is known to have influenced the blockbuster animations 'Cinderella,' 'Alice In Wonderland' and 'Peter Pan.' After leaving Disney, Blair continued to work as a graphic designer and illustrator. She illustrated several children's books, including Ruth Krauss' 'I Can Fly,' and later handled the character designs for Disneyland's musical boat ride 'It's a Small World.'

TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID… What happy teachers are saying: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Students loved learning about Mary Blair for Women's Month and the connection to Walt Disney World. Students were engaged and made some really wonderful art ~ Miss Red Apple ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This resource came with a lot of ideas on how to do the artwork. There was a lot of pages to ensure that each child's artwork was unique. It was easy to implement and my child actually sat down and used his watercolors to make it appear like Mary Blair's. There is so many different variations that I could use this same resource multiple different ways and still come out with something different each time. ~ Mouse Ears and Coffee Beans ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My students loved using this resource to inspire them when making their own Mary Blair-esque castle. I introduced the lesson with a picture book about her life then a short video as to why she was an integral part to adding the modern movement of art to Walt Disney animation and to the iconic It's A Small World attraction! The kids loved it! ~ Pamela T. ✨ Use Mary Blair Castles to bring fun, hands-on activities to your students to help build drawing and art concepts! ✨ Stay Connected Blog Instagram Pinterest YouTube Facebook Thanks for visiting! Yesterday was Mary Blair's birthday - she would have been 100! I remember when I was in my design fundamentals course, and I was looking up various artists for a paper and stumbled upon The Art and Flair of Mary Blair in the library. What a wonderful surprise - so much eye-candy! I love how recognizable her style is. (Also, check out Google's tribute!)

Are you ready for the Holiday season? I am already dreaming about making Christmas and winter art. Cozy book original is now available in my Big Cartel shop! inspired by Mary Blair's work in her Up and Down book. I am learning so much through an extensive study of her work. When I first saw her personal work and book illustrations I wasn't directly aware of the amazing line work with gouache to create such stunning texture. It isn't "in your face". It's such a subtle and brilliant (deceptively simple) design work. I keep discovering more and I love incorporating some of the figure postures into my work. This is the piece that inspired the cute girl above: You can check out more about Mary over on a website that her nieces created to honor and celebrate Mary's incredible legacy.
This is a detail of the Mosaic in the Contempory Resort at Walt Disney World in Florida. It was created by Mary Blair, who was a concept artist for Disney. I can remember seeing this for the first time back in '74 when I was 9 and it 'Wow-ed" me then, and still does all these years later. The redesign of the floor area in the Contemporary does this piece a huge unjustice in my opinion. I wish they would get rid of that ugly shop area and just put back some seats...heck, even enlarge Chef Mickey. I shot this with my 14mm and did some editing in CS5 to straighten it up. I think it would make a great bookmark. LOL!!
