Thinking inside the box: romantic, obsessive and shy, Cornell never moved out of his mother’s house, yet his strange, exquisite art brought him fame and friendships with Duchamp, Dalí and Warhol

I love being able to repurpose broken pieces of the past into whimsical new art. My favorite era id the Victorian times from children's books, toys, clothing to ephemera. But sometimes I stray into steampunk and more colorful vintage styles of assemblages.I just hope whatever I create makes someone smile! #assembledgeart #mixedmedia #Victorian #OOAK #whimsical #Romantic #victorian #shabby #oldphoto
Oakland based artist Tracey Snelling, featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 35, creates detailed dioramas and installations of urban landscapes. Ranging from miniature to large scale pieces, her installations represent her impression of a space through the use of mixed media like sculpture, video, and photography. Hers is an imaginary world based on real places, sometimes populated by dolls and figurines, and lit dramatically by LCD screens and film stills to add a flicker of life. For her latest multimedia installation debuting on November 20th, Snelling wanted to capture the vulnerability and strength found in poverty-stricken slums around the world.

I have seen variations of this project many times but have never tried it with my students. I am pleased with how our assemblages turned out! This was a great opportunity to clean out the junk in the classroom and teach about using found objects. My Primaries (or first grade) learned a little about American sculptor Louise Nevelson. There is a short clip on YouTube that explains about her artwork. I put a call out to families to donate … Read more... →

Artist Glen Taylor (previously) solders ridges of metal to porcelain fragments, completing a halved teacup or broken saucer with a range of unusual materials: barbed wire, tarnished silverware, old book pages, and multicolored twine form a portion of the household objects. Each intervention contrasts the pristine, delicate qualities of the porcelain with the visible rust,Continue reading "Barbed Wire, Rusty Knives, and Found Objects Mend Artist Glen Taylor’s Broken Porcelain"
This found-object assemblage centers around a river theme, serving as a frame for an antique stereoscope photograph of a man rowing a boat along the St. Lawrence River. He is near Montmorency Falls nine miles below Quebec, in fact. Along with the photo, you'll spy a collection of items—a well-weathered piece of bark, equally weathered twine, a Canada goose feather resting in an antique medicine bottle, and bits of dried moss wedged in among birch back and book bundles created from a work of fiction published in 1909. The backdrop for this scene is a poem (author unknown) about the St. Lawrence River. The complete poem is provided on the back of the assemblage, and it reads: ”Fair St. Lawrence! What poet has sung of its grace As it sleeps in the sun, with its smile-dimpled face Beaming up to the sky that it mirrors! What brush Has e'er pictured the charm of the marvellous hush Of its silence; or caught the warm glow of its tints As the afternoon wanes, and the even-star glints In its beautiful depths? And what pen shall betray The sweet secrets that hide from men's vision away In its solitude wild? 'Tis the river of dreams; You may float in your boat on the bloom-bordered streams, Where its islands like emeralds matchless are set, And forget that you live; and as quickly forget That they die in the world you have left; for the calm Of content is within you, the blessing of balm Is upon you forever.” Along the top of the assemblage is a line from the poem, which reads "Tis the river of dreams." The assemblage is set within an antique sewing machine drawer with intricate detailing. It measures 5" x 14" and is 3.75" deep, and it is designed to be displayed on a bookshelf or table with your other treasures, or displayed on a wall (fitted with wire for hanging). ••• To see other original paintings in my collection, visit my shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/RobynMartinsArt MY ARTIST STATEMENT—Painting is a daily ritual for me, as I continue to discover ways to express myself through art. My goal is to create artwork that represents how I see the world around me—or how I hope it could be, a place where mercy, benevolence, and peace are commonplace and can be found around any corner, under any tree, or beside any stream. At the same time, I desire to create meaningful work that others forge a deep connection to and bring into their own home as a unique expression of who they are.

Remember making dioramas with pen and card in shoeboxes as a child? As a quick survey of German artist and writer Antje Damm’s instagram will attest, Damm creates a world of hand-cut wonder with tiny dioramas constructed in matchboxes. It began with architecture and shoeboxes. At home with children after a professional life as an architect, Damm turned her 3D modelling skills to constructing cardboard dioramas to photograph, as illustrations for books she wrote for her four girls.

"Afternoon Tea" ● This is my most recent mirror project. Titled "Afternoon Tea" because its petite size makes me want to raise my pinky while sipping my tea. The 7"x11" framed mirror found at my favorite thrift store became the perfect foundation for this piece. The ¾" thick frame is perfect for attaching found objects using small screws and nails. I first covered the frame using vintage Mc'Call's pattern tissue over green tissue, front and back. The gold-tone embellishment piece on top is one half of what, I think, used to be a fancy 'letter holder'. Thankfully it is made of soft metal and I was able to cut it in half and attach it to the wood frame using brass screws and silicone adhesive. Other embellishments include a brass butter knife, United Airlines wings, tiny 'milagros' and many other fun, bling-thingys. (click on any image to enlarge)
