GREATER’ YUGOSLAVIA / PROPAGANDA: ETNOGRAFSKA KARTA. ZEMLJA SRBA HRVATA SLOVENACA. / MAPA ETNOGRÁFICO DE LOS PAISES YUGOSLAVOS. / ETHNOGRAPHIC MAP OF YUGOSLAVIA. Made in 1917, at the height of World War I, but before the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it depicts the hoped-for future nation of Yugoslavia, with its maximal territorial scope as envisioned by Pan-South Slavic activists. It was published in Buenos Aires, having been devised by the prominent pro-Yugoslavian propagandist Marcel Kolin, who then resided in exile in Chile. The publication was officially sponsored by the Jugoslavenska narodna obrana (JNO, the Yugoslav People’s Defence organization), a committee of Croatians living in South America dedicated to the cause of an independent Yugoslavia. The purpose this quad-lingual map was to establish and legitimize the notion of a future ‘Greater Yugoslavia’ in the minds of both Yugoslavians and global powers in the run up to the end of World War I and the supposed defeat of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In short, it was hoped that if the notion of a ‘Greater Yugoslavia’ gained popular currency then the supposedly victorious Entente powers would be inclined to support its creation at the resulting peace conference. I am terrible at slowing down. When I travel, I want to see as much as possible and do as much as possible. I like to walk for hours, sometimes purposefully getting lost, just to get a feel for the city. Even those rare days when I wake up slightly hungover and certainly sleep-deprived, I still tend to force myself out of bed to pound the pavement. If I’m traveling, I intend to take full advantage of the time I have. But sometimes, slowing down is a good thing. I arrived in Podgorica after a long overnight bus ride from Belgrade. I never meant to go to Montenegro’s capital city at all, but the beachside cities I planned to see had no empty beds for the Saturday night I was arriving. Weekends don’t mean much […]

Visiting Yugoslavia was always on my bucket list, and that was something which not even a collapse of the country would change.
Mostar is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most beautiful and enchanting small cities. Centered around the Neretva River, the old Ottoman frontier town is filled with narrow, winding alleys known as Kujundžiluk, or gold alleys, home to trinket sellers, covered market stalls, and cobbled streets leadi
