In varying states of deflation, Joe Davidson’s pastel balloons sag, slump, and flop in every direction. The limp, elongated forms are stacked on top of one another in seemingly precarious piles and resemble latex tubes filled with days-old air. While the sculptures are playful in both color and form, the Los Angeles-based artist notes that they also hold earnest themes of masculinity and aging, two concepts he’s thinking about often. Davidson prefers to explore new materials and those beyond the bronze, stone, and wood typically used in this medium. More

(Cast Bronze) Girl with balloon dog, a girl in "Graffiti" style with a bright metallic balloon of red nickel in the shape of a dog, in a three-dimensional representation, inspired by the famous work of Banksy (girl with balloon) which is summed up the metallic effect of the balloons of the American Jeff Koons, whom Guia admires, realizing this fusion of styles through sculpture. With the appropriate lighting, this work manages to reproduce an image that we would obtain from a graffiti template. The sculptures of Miguel Guía manage to transport us to Street art among which we can find works full of social criticism, political satire and very distinctive styles, such as the one that Banksy managed to make his own based on Blek le Rat. Merchants and gallery owners count on the guarantee of an exclusive, quality and unique work that collectors, as well as subsequent generations and/or heirs, can enjoy.

Masayoshi Matsumoto (previously) continues to astound us with his balloon twisting skills. The Japanese artist uses a variety of opaque, metallic, and translucent balloons to form tree-swinging monkeys, beetles, and fish out of water. When asked how he plans each of his latex creations Matsumoto explained to Colossal that each work is decided intuitively, and is dictated by whatever he feels like making in the moment. Most often the works take 3-6 hours each, depending on how many folds and colors the animal or insect might require. More

About Larry Moss: Larry Moss began his career 25 years ago as a NYC street performer, but has gone on to display his amazing air-filled art in 12 countries on four continents. His achievements have been recognized by The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, CNN Headline, PBS, Smithsonian Magazine, American Profile and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Moss has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show, NBC’s “Today” and at the White House, and has held the Guinness World Record for the largest non-round balloon sculpture since 2000. The author of many published ballooning books, Larry also has a degree in applied math and computer science, as well as a master’s in elementary education. Building community through his large-scale art creations is of particular interest to Larry, and was the focus of his 2009 TEDx talk in Rochester, NY. Kelly Cheatle, Designer and New Media Marketing Director for Airigami: Kelly Cheatle loves creating in any medium. She received her design degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a minor in Illustration, and a major interest in every studio elective she could find. She utilizes her diverse knowledge of traditional materials and image-making techniques daily in her work as a graphic designer/illustrator. She became Larry’s design partner upon informing him that she was going to help whether he wanted her to or not. While Kelly initially focused on non-balloon aspects of Airigami projects, the opportunity to work in a new medium was simply too much for her to resist.

Although research suggests the ancient Venus figurines were created as totems of survival amid a changing climate, the enigmatic forms continue to puzzle historians, their exact cultural context and relevance unknown. The mysterious statues, with exaggerated physical features like large, distended bellies and generally plump appendages, recently inspired a playful project by Naama Steinbock and Idan Friedman, the designers behind Reddish Studio based in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Titled “Venus of Jaffa,” the series interprets the prehistoric sculptures as lighthearted, impermanent forms. More
