Ah, Banff! One of the most spectacular and photogenic places on Earth. God definitely SHOWED UP when He created the mountainous region of the Canadian Rockies, giving an extra splash of pizzaz on Banff! So it’s no wonder you’re here researching for a photography guide to capture the most iconic Instagrammable spots in Banff with the most minimal effort. And truth be told, there are definitely MANY gorgeous photo-worthy places in this national park you can reach with just a short walk from your car. Before we get started though, one thing to note is that not all of these locations are open year-round. You can keep yourself updated with opening and closure dates with Parks Canada. But regardless of whether you come in the summer or winter, these photo spots are absolutely awe-inspiring (pics below to prove it!). Note #2: when you visit Banff or any Canadian national park, you’ll need to purchase a parks pass (which you can do here or at the park entrances) and have it shown either on the inside of your windshield or hung on your rear-view mirror. Make the most of your journey from Banff to Jasper by stopping at these top 10 spots along Icefields Parkway! Experience luxury in the heart of the mountains at these three Fairmont hotels of Banff, Lake Louise & Jasper! Take a tour through the most captivating sites of Canmore & Kananaskis just 30 minutes from Banff! One last thing! You see those brackets at the end of each spot’s description below? Yeah, those are the latitude and longitude coordinates so that you can plunk them right into Google Maps to lead you right to the spot where we’ve taken our photos! Happy photo spot hunting! Banff Area Photo Spots Vermillion Lakes Situated nearest the west exit to the town of Banff, Vermillion Lakes is one of the easiest places to get to whether in the summer or winter. Vermillion Lakes Road is short, well paved and isn’t often travelled – very low traffic is a definite bonus for photographers. In winters, Vermillion Lakes is a great place to have a breathtaking skate facing Mount Rundle on the open ice, and offers a peaceful view in the summer from the dock. (51.183996, -115.594364) Vermillion Lakes Viewpoint You can either drive straight down to the lake or spot the beautiful view of Mount Rundle from up top, right on Highway 1! Vermillion Lakes Viewpoint is found on the TransCanada highway going East right before the first exit to Banff, which means you can only stop here going in the one direction. So if you’re heading towards Lake Louise for the day and coming back in this direction, make sure to catch a glimpse of what it’s like from this viewpoint! (51.1823150, -115.6033078) Banff Ave Of course coming to Banff National Park means you have to see the town itself! Unlike popular belief, Banff isn’t just about food, pubs, shopping and crowds of tourists. The views from here are spectacular as well and spending the day walking along the Bow River will make every cell in your body giddy with joy. So make time for at least a quick stop in town and a shot of Cascade Mountain from the middle of Banff Ave! (Parking is free in the lots and on the street with your Banff Park Pass.) (51.1766719, -115.5709188) Surprise Corner You know that postcard view of the Fairmont Banff Springs? Well this is where you get it! Surprise Corner is a sharp bend in Tunnel Mountain Road as you drive up or down the mountain, and there’s a vast opening where all you see is endless mountains and the historical castle hotel amidst the numerous evergreens. There’s a small parking lot at Surprise Corner with a lookout area to catch this shot. (51.167369, -115.559274) Lake Louise Photo Spots Lake Louise Shooting Lake Louise at any point in the year will be rewarding, but the best times are in early summer morning for the perfect reflection shot, and in November when the lake starts to freeze and the flat sheet of ice creates an opaque mirror of the surrounding mountains. Early mornings are your best bet to get a parking spot in the lot as tons of hike trailheads and outdoor activities are located here, and the tourists often conglomerate at Lake Louise – for good reason, obviously! (51.4164623, -116.2174639) If you’re thinking of staying in Lake Louise, check out my piece of spending a night in one of the most iconic hotels in Western Canada, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise! Moraine Lake Moraine Lake has become an extremely popular destination for photographers over the years as Instagram sparked its rise to fame. It’s honestly my favourite place on Earth and perfect for a gorgeous canoe shot. A few steps from the parking lot will bring you to the lodge area, cafe and rental shop. But it’ll take a few minutes of stairs to get to this viewpoint where you’ll be swept with the iconic view of the Valley of the Ten Peaks. The steps to get to the top of the rock were built for easy accessibility but will, unfortunately, not be possible for wheelchair access. Perhaps they’ll build a ramp here one day! The road to Moraine Lake from Lake Louise is very restricted. They used to allow cars to park on the side of the one-lane road near the parking lot but have limited it in 2020, most likely due to COVID-related reasons. The park rangers will close the road once the Moraine Lake parking lot is full. This usually happens around 6:30am on weekends (yikes, right?!) but you should be lucky enough to find a spot around 8am on a weekday morning. Sunset is also fantastic here if you are willing to come around 8 or 9pm.Fun fact: […]

When we think “Calgary”, we think Stampede, Banff, the Flames, more Stampede… We don’t always have in mind that it’s quite the photogenic city. But in recent years, architects and artists from around the world have placed Calgary on the map and turned it into one of the most photo worthy cities in all of Canada. Whether you’re looking for iconic architectural landmarks to snap photos of, sunsets over skylines, or rustic locations for a fashion shoot, Calgary has the perfect backdrop for whatever your photography vision is. I’ve called Calgary home for nearly two decades now. And ever since my husband Jason and I picked up our first cameras in 2016, we’ve been out there shooting, with our home city being our muse from the very beginning. We’ve found some of the best scenic spots in and around downtown Calgary and narrowed our favourites down to a top 10. These are the best 10 Instagrammable photo spots in Calgary that have graced our lenses time and time again! Where to Stay in Calgary If you’re visiting Calgary or even taking a staycation while exploring your home city, we have a couple of favourites when it comes to hotel stays. The Hyatt Regency Calgary has it all when it comes down to location, amenities, price, views and is itself a historical icon. And for a luxurious and quiet stay on the riverfront, Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire is the place to be! But if you’re hoping for a more homey getaway that is still in walking or quick transit distance from these photo spots, here are a few vacation rentals and hotels you can check out! Peace Bridge The Peace Bridge was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and opened for public use in spring of 2012. It was built for the high volumes of commuters who go to work downtown daily by foot and bike, and connects the south pathway of Eau Claire to the north pathway of the Sunnyside community across the Bow River. Resembling a finger trap puzzle, the Peace Bridge is nicknamed the “Finger Trap Bridge”. One of the best photos you could take to feature the Peace Bridge, is a sunrise shot taken from the northwest side of the structure. Long exposures are also marvellous to take in early autumn/late spring at sunrise/sunset! Prince’s Island Park Prince’s Island is a park that divides the Bow River and finds itself between the Peace Bridge on the west and Centre St Bridge on the east. The island is so immense that it is home to many seasonal events and festivals (such as Folk Fest), the River Cafe, the Enmax stage, playgrounds, picnic areas and bike/walk trails. Facing south, you can perfectly capture the office and residence towers in Eau Claire and perhaps catch the geese and ducks in view by the river. Prince’s Island is also a widely popular spot for engagement/couple photo shoots. Centre St Bridge The Centre Street Bridge is a historical landmark and was constructed back in 1915 after a previous bridge, the MacArthur Bridge, was destroyed by a flood. It’s a bi-level bridge that allows for vehicular transit on both the upper and lower levels, but the upper level is where it’s at for pedestrians to set up for photos. Coming down south from the Crescent Heights community into Chinatown, the view of the Calgary Tower is as good as it gets while on the road as the Calgary Tower sits right on Centre Street and 9th Avenue South. You can set up your tripod on the east walkway of the upper level of the bridge for a closeup of the city skyline, or get right into Chinatown for your middle-of-the-road shot of the tower. The Bow’s Wonderland Sculpture Calgary’s most famous sculpture is the mesh head that stands freely in front of The Bow (not the river, but the tower). The Wonderland Sculpture was created by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa, and depicts a young girls to symbolize the youthfulness and desire for growth that Calgary has. It makes more beautiful photos in front of the tall blue curve of the tower, but you can also get fancy with portraits through the bent wires as there are doorways on each side of the neck. 7th Ave +15’s 7th Avenue has plenty of +15’s (indoor bridges that connect adjacent buildings to each other via their 2nd floors) that get great views of the office towers and train lines passing through the downtown core. 7th Avenue is where the train lines run and can honestly be a great place to take high-compression professional portraits because of the natural lighting you get through the clean +15 windows. Access to the +15’s is open to the public throughout work days (Monday to Friday) during work hours (7am to 6pm). Stephen Ave Stephen Avenue is Calgary’s most historical avenue and maintains a lot of the feel and construction that dates back to the Sandstone Era (late 19th century to 1915). The section of road of 8th Avenue South that is coined Stephen Ave is open to only pedestrians from 6am to 6pm daily. The street is lined with historical buildings that have now been converted to retails, banks, gyms – the GoodLife gym now inhabits an old and beautiful bank -, restaurants and bars, and Stephen Ave often hosts annual events and festivals (such as the GLOW Fest in the winter and Stampede themed events in the summer) that line the street with a vibrant atmosphere year-round. This pedestrian mall is busy daily but encapsulates some of the best parts of Calgary, and makes for a moody backdrop for a high fashion photo shoot. Central Library The New Central Library (NCL) is Calgary’s very own architectural masterpiece and one of the most sought-after landmarks for Calgary visitors and locals. It’s received international praise for its design, thanks to Snøhetta and DIALOG, and has a very unique appearance both on the inside and outside. Thankfully, entrance to the […]
