Stars 'n Stripes 'n Scraps Quilt (queen size--just finished Sun 3/13/16) Answering the question--what to do with all those lovely fabric scraps? I'm still pecking away at my fabric scrap piles, building as many scrappy queen size quilts as I can by May, then I'll switch to building purses, baby quilts, table runners, and pot holders. I am full speed in my commitment to reduce 3 big bins of scraps, mostly 2.5" strips. I have a fourth bin full of 1.5" strips - and here's what those 1.5" strips made in the past: a decorative pocket for a soft luggage, this travel bag is 22 x 22. and I make other soft luggage out of upholstery material--oh yeah, got a big bin full of upholstery material scraps. Here are a couple pics of the soft luggage the small cotton fabric scraps I build these . . . little padded pouches with metal swivel clasp to carry cell phone or eye glasses. and rope baskets that are cool seriously, it takes a full day to make one of these. I wrap fabric strips around 1/4" cotton clothesline rope to create a disc (bottom of the basket), then I start nudging the disc upwards with my left hand to build the wall while I stitch. A zig zag stitch holds firmly. Ok, ok back to photos of current quilt Stars 'n Stripes 'n Scraps . . . my signature free hand edge to edge quilting "Feather Bouquet" I confess, even after doing the last three quilts--I made only a dent in the scrap piles. Ah, oh well. I'll keep sewing 'n sewing. I'm sure I mentioned one more scrap pile of 1" wide or less strips and short lengths?? I give them to my friend Jerry who uses all the colorful bits in beautiful rag rugs he looms. They are gorgeous! Here's the half way point of long arm quilting process. Lots of color loading quilt (floating quilt) After removing the quilt from the frame, I cut away excess batting and backing, square the quilt, sew 400+ inches of fabric binding, install the binding, then sit for 5-6 hours turning the binding and hand stitch. It's not complicated work. Its time consuming, but relaxing. I'll drop in more photos later. Right now, I'm going to take a nap. Talk to you later.

When my mum was here for Easter she made two One Hour Baskets. I've already shown you the first one which was for me: but I haven't shown you the second one, which is for my 6 year old niece, Jorja. Fortunately I had these pink fabrics in my stash. They had come in a mystery box I purchased through Craftsy last year, and they were just right for a dainty little girl. If you'd like to make one of these baskets, got to Kelby Sews and follow her pattern. It's free! One of my lovely followers. Jeanette from Sydney, Australia, liked the idea so much that she stepped out of her comfort zone and bought some bright fabrics for her One Hour Basket. Isn't Jeanette's lovely too, and what about the view from her apartment! I love that yellow on the inside of the basket - it's so sunny. For the Aussies and Kiwis out there, Jeanette got her fabrics at Spotlight. Sydney has been having some terrible weather this week. I've seen TV reports showing huge waves in the harbour which they really aren't used to. We're built of tough stuff here in Wellington, and we get winds up to 130 kph at least once or twice a year. It was very strange to see waves crashing across the roads in Sydney Harbour. I hope everyone there is OK and the weather has calmed down now. I'm linking up with Sew Cute Tuesday.

Hi, Today I made this fab little fabric basket. It’s serially quick and easy (just my sort of thing) so I think I will be making a few more! I’m going to be making them for Christmas an…
If you read my blog post yesterday, I reviewed two baskets tutorials. They are very excellent tutorials to be checked out! But, I still wasn't totally happy with my baskets. These were going to become my Christmas presents for the year, and I wanted to get them right for all of my friends and family. I made another version of the one hour basket from Kelby. This time using the heaviest stabilizer available here in Germany - S 520, Vliesoline. I thought it worked much better to give the basket the stability it needed to hold its shape and purpose of a stairs' basket (that accumulates everything from the house). I also bought some heavy, home decor fabric which is actually cheaper here than quilting fabric. Different Trial Versions in Production If you look at the gray baskets closely, that one on the far right was my first try with the heavy stabilizer and the home decor fabric. I used a medium weight stabilizer (Vliesoline S320) on the light, print fabric and a heavyweight (S 520) on the lower, gray, dotty fabric. Since this stabilizer is three times more expensive than "regular" I thought this would be a good compromise. The shape became very solid, maybe even too solid! It is extremely hard to maneuver the basket under the sewing machine after the bottom is sewn shut and you are trying to attach the inner and outer layers. On the second gray basket (the next gray one you see to the left, sandwiched between the two red baskets), I top stitched 1/4" above the area where the print and dotty fabrics are sewn together. This definitely gives the basket character! I also top stitched 1/4" from the top of the basekt to keep the inner shell in place. This seam is originally sews 1/2" seam allowance, but you can definitely top stitch lower than 1/8" from the top. I also attached the handles with a one-inch spacing from the center seam making the handles ends two inches apart. Okay, these were looking even better, and I wanted a little diversity with a fabric change. I used the "red/orange" fabric (also home decor and washed!) with a medium weight stabilizer (Vliesoline S320) on all segments of the basket except the inner lining. This worked out even better! It gave the basket enough stiffness to stay flat, but was much easier to sew under the machine when it came to attaching both the inner lining and outer shell together. The upper "linen-look" fabric I pressed downwards this time instead of upwards and top stitched on the bottom area with a beige cotton thread. I think it makes the basket look very professional! I didn't want to quilt a lot on this basket, because this is supposed to be a speedy project for Christmas, right? Even though I spent several days (one week) to perfect my "gift basket," it was worth it! Just think, I worked out all of the bugs for you to get started on your holiday baskets! I have added a TWO-page cheat-sheet of how I constructed my basket. Go ahead and start scoping out some beautiful home decor fabric (heavyweight) for the outer shells and quilting quality fabric (lightweight) for the insides. You can download the cheat sheet on my FREE DOWNLOADS page. Donations are kindly welcomed and accepted. THANK YOU!. And if you are celebrating Thanksgiving today, happy Thanksgiving!! We will be celebrating on the weekend when we have time to enjoy it. Thanks for stopping by for the second part of the one-hour basket review!

So Kelly made a bunch of cute baskets and had everyone on Instagram drooling over them and begging for the tutorial so she whipped one up (of course she did, she's basically superwoman) and it's awesome. It really does take about an hour to sew (mine took a bit longer because I made the patchwork panels) and it will make a great gift or gift for yourself ;-) I used 20 charm squares (5") with one row cut in half after I sewed them together to attach to the 8 charm panels on the bottom of each. I used 2 charms sewn together for the handles - trimmed to be the right length (9") after I sewed them together. I ended up with panels a bit bigger than what Kelly's pattern calls for - mine were 18.5"x 11.5" but I wasn't about to trim off any Good Folks so I just used them as they were with all her other measurements kept the same and they turned out fine. I used fusible fleece on the exterior panels and quilted them a little after fusing the fleece on - next time I'll put ShapeFlex interfacing on the interior pieces if I'm using all quilting cotton just to make it a little sturdier. Overall two thumbs up! Quick, easy and cute! Well done Kelly. Find the tutorial here on Kelby Sews.

6,045 pounds. If you took all of the scraps of fabric that I’ve accumulated over the years and weighed them, that’s the number you’d get. Okay, so I totally made that up.
