Nel cimitero di Greyfriars (sorto nel 1561), ad Edimburgo, si trova una tomba che è diventata famosa per via dell'entità malevola che si dice la abiti. La tomba in questione è conosciuta come il "Mausoleo Nero" e si trova oltre le alte mura e i cancelli serrati di una zona conosciuta come Covenanters Prison. L'entità viene chiamata "Mackenzie Poltergeist". Il Mausoleo Nero sembra differire da altri luoghi infestati di Edimburgo per due motivi. Uno è la frequenza degli avvistamenti del poltergeist. L'altro è la gravità degli incidenti. Ma chi era questo Mackenzie? Vediamo... George Mackenzie, nato a Dundee , era il figlio di Sir Simon Mackenzie di Lochslin (morto nel 1666) e di Elizabeth, figlia del reverendo Peter Bruce, ministro di St. Leonard's, e preside della della St. Leonard's Hall presso l'Università di St . Andrews. Sir George studiò presso il King's College, l?università di Aberdeen (dove entrò nel 1650), l'università di St Andrews , e quella di Bourges , in Francia. Mackenzie divenne avvocato nel 1659, e difese il Marchese di Argyll nel processo di Archibald, nel 1661. Fu deputato di giustizia dal 1661 al 1663, incarico che lo coinvolse nei processi alle streghe. Mackenzie fu anche nominato cavaliere, e divenne membro del Parlamento scozzese per la Contea di Ross a partire dal 1669. Nel 1677 divenne Lord Advocate, nonché membro del Consiglio Privato della Scozia. Come Lord Advocate fu il ministro responsabile della politica persecutoria di Charles II contro i presbiteriani Covenanters. Il 28 febbraio 1638, i Convernaters si erano riuniti nel cimitero per stipulare il Patto Nazionale, che imponeva di mantenere il loro credo e di ribellarsi al cattolicesimo. Molti di loro descrivevano la Covernaters Prison come un vero e proprio campo di concentramento, date le condizioni dei carcerati e la puzza che veniva dalle celle. I carcerati, dopo essere stati torturati e uccisi,venivano bruciati e seppelliti nel cimitero di Greyfriars. Dopo la battaglia di Bothwell Bridge, nel 1679, , Sir George Mackenzie, imprigionò oltre 2000 Covenanters. Fu soprannominato Mackenzie il sanguinario perchè i suoi modi di uccidere e torturare erano davvero terribili. Mackenzie si dimise per un breve periodo nel 1686, riprendendo di nuovo il suo ufficio nel 1688. Si oppose alla detronizzazione di James II e per sfuggire alle conseguenze, si ritirò dalla vita pubblica. Morì a Westminster l'8 maggio 1691 e venne sepolto nella Greyfriars Kirkyard a Edimburgo . Il suo mausoleo fu progettato da James Smith. Considerate le efferate crudeltà avvenute in questo luogo, non c’è da meravigliarsi dei fenomeni paranormali che si sono verificati. Nel periodo intercorso tra i primi avvistamenti (registrati nel 1999) ed oggi, ci sono stati centinaia di "attacchi" documentati nei pressi del mausoleo e della Covenanters Prison. Di questi sorprendenti attacchi, 140 hanno causato il collasso dei malcapitati protagonisti. Ci sono pagine e pagine di testimonianze oculari e ci sono probabilmente molte altre persone che hanno incontrato il poltergeist, ma che non hanno mai raccontato le proprie storie. Sono tantissimi i casi in cui i testimoni hanno riportato tagli, lividi e bruciature, spesso sotto ai vestiti. Esistono molte fotografie di questi segni, così come esistono delle immagini che mostrano una forma non identificata nella tomba. Ci sono diverse testimonianze che parlano di una figura bianca, di odori inspiegabili, di rumori strani, come se qualcuno bussasse da sotto terra e dentro la tomba stessa. Sono stati trovati diversi animali morti senza spiegazione davanti al Mausoleo Nero. Varie persone hanno descritto un qualcosa di invisibile che le avrebbe colpite, tirato loro i capelli, afferrato gambe e braccia. Qualcuno ha addirittura affermato di essere stato posseduto. L'area è stata esorcizzata due volte, entrambe senza successo. E' stata registrata dell'attività paranormale in quattro diverse case intorno al cimitero e nel 2002 è scoppiato un grande incendio nelle residenze dietro la tomba di George Mackenzie. Nell'ottobre del 2003, inoltre, un incendio ha spazzato via anche gli uffici di una compagnia che organizzava delle visite guidate ed altre abitazioni - tutti edifici con vista sul cimitero. Nessuna delle proprietà circostanti è stata danneggiata e una causa ufficiale per l'incendio non è mai stato trovata. Non si sa che cosa sia davvero il "Mackenzie Poltergeist", se si tratti di un'entità soprannaturale, una nuvola di feromoni, un demone o solo una serie di reazioni psicosomatiche e isteriche di massa. Ma una cosa è certa: è diventato il caso soprannaturale meglio documentato di tutti i tempi.
