The studio would reportedly bring millions of dollars to the Bastrop area.
Built by the CCC in the 1930's, the cabins, refectory and other structures built by the CCC were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997, one of only 46 in Texas and one of only 5 CCC developed parks to received the designation. The exemplary architecture was the primary reason it was given the honor. The buildings were meticulously designed by CCC architect Arthur Fehr under the direction and guidelines of former National Park Service architect and CCC regional director for the Southwest Herbert Maier. Maier had designed the trailside museums in Yellowstone National Park at Fishing Bridge, Norris, Madison and Old Faithful (no longer extant). He was also the one that created the National Park Service's arrowhead symbol. Maier gathered many of his designs and those of other NPS architects into a pattern book titled Park & Recreation Structures that was used as a guide for the architects of the CCC parks. A young Arthur Fehr relied on this pattern book and the design philosophy of what would eventually be termed National Park Service Rustic architecture to design the buildings of Bastrop State Park. The structures make use of native stone, a red sandstone quarried nearby, and woods such as loblolly pine, cedar, oak and walnut, to help blend the buildings in with the landscape. With several of the cabins, such as this one, the stone dressings at the base bulge out and are rougher in texture to give the building the appearance that it is merely an outcrop of a natural rock formation. Stylistically, it telegraphs that this building should be here because it grew out of the ground. This harmonious use of materials is found not just in the buildings, but in water fountains, bridges, culverts and fences. Fehr went onto a successful career as an architect in private practice, developing a more American Modernist style though still heavily relying upon native and local materials as a centerpiece of his designs. Among the work by him and his firm are Austin's First English Lutheran Church, the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, St. Stephen's Episcopal School, and Robert Mueller Municipal Airport (no longer extant except air traffic control tower). He eventually served as President of the Texas chapter of the AIA (American Institute of Architects). The cabins and refectory were saved from destruction in the Bastrop Complex Fire that burned more than 33,000 acres in Bastrop County from September to October of 2011. While 95% of Bastrop State Park was burned, firefighters and Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept employees managed to save the historic structures by digging fire lanes, removing pine needles and other flammable fire fuel from around the structures and keeping their wooden roofs wet. Two structures, the Lost Pines Overlook and Fehr's Overlook were damaged by the fires but can be restored.
The nine-by-three-foot mahogany entrance door is meant to evoke the surrounding trees.
“I wanted more of a skeletal look for this house, and less of a chunky, log-cabin look,” says Panton, who added stark steel bracing across the entire length of the porch’s roof structure.
From its Main Street Historic District to fabulous camping and outdoor activities, these are the best things to do in Bastrop, Texas.
