Are you tormented by dated wallpaper, fake wood paneling, chained lights, glitter popcorn ceilings and brass? You must be stuck in the 70's! You need a quick and easy update to make your bath bearable to walk into without thinking you are in an episode of Three's Company? (I know, I just dated myself) Here's some ways to update that will be easy on the budget... Typical Examples of the 70's Bathrooms Typical 70's wood paneling and wallpaper Crazy Wallpaper This bathroom is fairly calm but the hanging lights give it's age away This is what your bathroom could look like! Elegant and Classy! Here's some great ways to update: 1 - Remove or cover that ugly fake wood paneling!! It is the worst invention ever. There are several DIY sites that say to fill in the cracks with drywall mud and paint it but I am a firm believer that this doesn't work. It takes a lot of effort to do this process and eventually the mud will crack and fall out. It's better to cover it or remove it. DON'T DO IT! (Example of filling the cracks in wood paneling) A - Wood Paneling is a great option if you just want to cover it. Beaded Board Wainscot (Love the green walls!) Beadboard comes in sheets so you can nail and glue it right over. Add base and chair rail trim. An 8'ft long section is $50. Example of Board & Batten type paneling Just attached a 4'x8'x1/4" sheet of plywood and attached 1x2 or 1x4s any spacing you want just make sure to cover the seams. A paint grade plywood sheet is $13. Classic Paneling doesn't have to be white Paneling doesn't have to be traditional Remove the fake wood paneling and add sheetrock. Finish and paint or wallpaper. Use a chair rail to cover any wall depth differences Or put green board (backer board for tile) up and tile! Love a subway tile wainscot! 2 & B - Usually the 70's floor were sheet vinyl. Remove it or if it is stuck pretty good and not peeling up then put down self stick floor tiles over it. They are fast and easy to install and only $1 a square foot. Obviously a better option is to have new tile floors installed, so if you can afford it ...go for it! 3 & E - 70's cabinets...Oh boy, where do I start. They cheaped out. Most likely if you have 70's cabinets they are veneer or plastic over particle wood. Paint them or replace the doors with new ones! Think color, not just white! Still keep that 70's glam with a modern take on cabinets. 4 & D - Replace those plastic laminate countertops with stone, or if you want to splurge buy a vanity sink unit. I love a Carrara marble (shown in picture above) but you can get any stone. Look for remnants if you have a small vanity. Here's some vanities you can replace that old cabinet with.... Stone & Chrome Sink Vanity Restoration Hardware Gramercy $2,195 Modern Vanity & Eclectic Mix 5 & G - Dress up those walls! Remove the wild and most likely flocked or metallic 70's paper and either paint or put up some new wallpaper. Great example of a simple & traditional bathroom (minus the fern) There are so many fun wallpapers! Paint a stencil or use removable wallpaper. Sexy Hexy by Chasing Paper 6, C & F - Update with new hardware. This is the easiest update. Currently, gold is all the rage in finishes but if you aren't that trendy or it doesn't fit your style, stick with nickel, brass, stainless, or oil rubbed bronze. A satin finish is best because polished shows everything and scratches more easily. The least expense is chrome (which is a classic look)! Kohler Vibrant Modern Brushed Gold... Ohhh...Ahhh...Looove! 7 - Replace that chained pendant that hangs from a ceiling hook with a wall sconce. Horchow Edison-Type Wall Sconce $195 George Kovaks Rectangular Bronze Wall Sconce (comes in chrome and brass too!) $117 8 - A new mirror. This is the most important change because it is what you see the most, besides yourself of course! There are so many mirror fun mirrors, don't be afraid to try something new. You can even spray paint the one you have to breathe new life into it. Try layering mirrors especially if you have a plain plate mirror now. Hang another mirror in front of it using fishing line from the ceiling. The decorative mirror dresses up this plain plate mirror Layer two framed mirrors H - Add some life to those counters with new accessories. Your toothbrush will thank you! Horchow Waylande Gregory Porcelain and Gold (sorry these are expensive but I couldn't help myself) 9 - Under no circumstances should you have a toilet lid cover nor a rug that wraps around the toilet; it's just unsanitary. My laundry room and I go way back. We’ve been through so much together: floods, venting issues, stacking and unstacking the washer and dryer. It seems I just can’t make up my mind with the configuration of this poor room. It’s plenty big enough to be both a mud room and a laundry room, yet […]
...I find it is the little things that make me most happy to do laundry. Truthfully, I haven't complained (not yet anyway) about doing laundry since we moved into our new farmhouse. Honestly, I use to grumble quite a bit 'bout doing laundry - but now, I'm finding when you have room to be organized a bit - everything seems to be a lil' more enjoyable - even if it is washing dirty clothes. But instead of ramblin' I'll simply share some pictures with you and let you in on why this room makes me happy. Of course, starting with my sink - graciously given to us by Linda and Tommy from an old house of theirs being demolished. I'm so thankful they thought of me - because I will always love this sink. It is cast iron of course with a 1934 stamp on the bottom of it. So #1 - I love my sink! #2 - I love my big window that lets in lots of light and I can look out and watch the cattle grazing up on the hill. #3 - I love the simple things like my handmade soap - ready to work as many hands are washed in there. #4 - Oh how I love this painting - lovingly given to us by my friend Becky, of one of our barns with the quilt squares. #5 - I'm still loving my front load washer and dryer - it is about 3 years old now - and farm clothes really give them a workout. #6 - I love my faucet - purchased from Overstock.com #7 - I love this painting - also gifted to us by a talented artist, Mary Lou - of a lady hanging her clothes on the line. I want a clothesline - that'll be a summer project. #8 - I love my cabinets - lots of places to put cleaning supplies and such. #9 - Of course, you gotta have a place to sit down and take your boots off - and this is why I love my lil' chair. #10 - I love my kettle - a gift from mom and of course, I love that lil' boy in that picture. #11 - I love my cabinet with pretty baskets. #12 - I love my bead board and all my molding - thanks Andy. #13 - and lastly, I LOVE the fact that all the ugliness - like all my dirty clothes and hampers and shoes and my brooms and you know - all that stuff you gotta have to live each day - well, it is hidden nicely behind this door and I love that ;-) I say you can make any space - no matter how big or small - a happy place when it is filled with things that make you smile. I'm grateful for this space to do something for my family and I'm thankful for the lil' things more and more each day. May your day be a happy and blessed one.
Beadboard has been a staple of home construction for over a century and it pays to understand what this molding is and it's many uses.

beadboard wallpaper on end of cabinets
I have shared many rooms in our home over the past couple years on my blog but have never shown the kitchen. It is attached to the dining room....... Which I love........ There is a reason I have never shown you what's on the other end of the dining room. We have lived in our home for nine years. This summer my goal was to attack those orangish worn cabinets and bring the kitchen up-to-date. The hood above the range was avocado green. It's just a dingy out-dated kitchen. I had to do it on practically no budget. I spent less than $200 on everything. So here goes. The finish on the lower cabinets was very worn. Two and a half weeks ago I started the tedious task of stripping the thick orange top coat. I had heard good things about Cirta Stripping Gel and it didn't disappoint. I'd brush it on and within 20 seconds it would bubble. This stuff saved so much work. Then everything was sanded smooth. What a dusty mess this was. The entire kitchen was covered in a thick covering of dust. I added trim to all 15 cabinet doors and 19 drawers. These were sheets of some kind of pressboard my dad and I cut into strips. I glued and shot 3/4 inch nails in with my gun. Some of the doors were not square. I'd cut a piece of trim for one side and fit it to the other side to see if it matched. Some of them were off by 1/4 inch in length. The drawers after being stripped..... ....and after being sanded and trim added. Then came the task of adding wood filler to the nail holes and mitered corners (because they weren't square). Then I sanded them again. I had 3 inch mdf board strips left over from the board and batten treatment I did on the living room walls last summer. I used those to make frames around the bar and the ends of the cabinets. Then I added beadboard inside of those. I wouldn't have needed to strip the bar and cabinet ends but I was unsure at the time exactly what I was going to do. Oh well, I'm sure the glue stuck better than it would have to the glossy finish it had (I also nailed it). I had to caulk around the inside of the trim where the beadboard and trim meet. Again, I had to fill the nail holes and mitered corners, then sand. I primed everything with Kilz oil-based primer. I wanted to lock in the orange stain and have better durability. The only disadvantage is that I had to clean my brush each day with paint thinner. I also learned the second day to wear gloves. It does not come off skin very well. After priming I gave everything a light sanding. After priming came the easy part. I sprayed the doors and drawers. It went quickly but took several days since I didn't do them all in one day and had to spray both sides. I got impatient waiting a day for one side to dry so I could flip it over and spray the other side. I hung a couple cabinet doors and decided it was too much white. I wanted the trim to pop so I lightly sanded the edges of the trim to make it stand out. Then I gave everything two coats of matte polycrylic to seal it. Here's one more look at the BEFORE And the AFTER It's so bright and cheery I did 95% of the work on this redo. My husband made over the oven hood. He sprayed it down with degreaser and scrubed it. Then took it to the car wash and pressure washed it before spraying it black. I have plans for the door. I am going to add some decorative moulding and paint and distress it. It's like the elephant in the room but I couldn't wait to share pics. I also added beadboard to the kitchen and dining room walls and painted the upper portion a tan / gray color. I made three beadboard panels with chunky moulding on the back side of the bar. The left panel is actually a cabinet door. It holds games. There's an empty space where a cutting board used to be. It was gross and we threw it out when we moved in. I found these three vintage moulding frames at a yard sale last summer for 50 cents each. I used to hate the soffits until I added the beadboard and trim. Now they are one of my favorite parts of this make over. I found the old enamel wash basin at Goodwill a few months back for $4.50. It's hard to see with the sun but I picked up the black and white toile valance at a yard sale for $2. The accesories were fun to come up with. I shopped the house for things I already had. I love the ends of the cabinets. The beadboard and trim add so much to the once flat ends. A view from the family room. I scored 6 large metal stars at a yardsale last week for $3 for all. The blue rusty one is my favorite. The antique feather duster was at another yardsale for $2. I have about a half days work touching up paint and such. I still need to refinish the door, change the outlets to white, and install a new kitchen light fixture. It has been an exhausting almost three weeks but I couldn't be happier with the results. It is just as I had imagined. I'm linking up with Strut Your Stuff Thursday, Transformation Thursday, Open House Thursday, Furniture Feature Friday, Frugal Friday, Show and Share Day, and Feature Friday.
