Every bead addict knows and owns seed beads. But did you know that there are many different types of beads within this category? Whether you are brand new to beading or an expert jewelry maker with way too many beads, everyone can use this Seed Beads Guide for Beginners! So, what are seed beads, anyway? Seed beads are basically small beads that come in a variety of different shapes and materials but are generally small in size. Most of them around the size of a small bird seed. They can be used for anything from simple stringing projects to bead weaving and stitched patterns. You can even use them as spacers between other beads in your seed bead patterns! You will learn from this guide that seed beads come in a wide range of shapes and designs. This gives you endless options for DIY jewelry projects! Sizes for seed beads can get a little confusing: seed beads range in size from 10/0 to about 22/0. The larger the number, the smaller the size. That means that the 15/0 is the smallest bead, and the 6/0 is the biggest. Most beaders use size 11/0 or 12/0. Click here for a seed bead size chart! Now that you have this guide on all the different seed beads, you can make stunning, one-of-a-kind seed bead patterns. Join our crafting community! Sign up for our free eNewsletters today!

One of my 2013 New Year's beading resolutions was to learn how to bead with Kumihimo. Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding technique worked on a round loom tool called a marudai. Alas, I ran out
Time, these days, is so precious to all of us! Even I am looking at ways to create the same level of quality loom weaving within a shorter amount of precious time! I want to share a technique I have been perfecting for a while, "Trice Edging"! This method allows you to 'weave and edge' at the 'same time'! Below are the steps in pictures. String your loom as you would start any new loom project, warping one thread more then the number of beads wide. Now string on a good number of edging beads, or 5 more than the number of rows to weave, an 11/0 round, not tubular like a Delica. This type of bead lays much nicer for this simple line edge. You will want to thread 5 or so more number of beads than the rows you plan to weave. These can be added after the initial warps are strung or string the beads first and warp the loom with the two extra warps stacked with beads. Attach your weft to the outside warp of your bead row, not the same thread holding your edging beads. Weave the first row as if the two outside warps with beads are not there! Just after exiting this row, slide an edge bead up and run your needle inside, towards you. Now add the next number of beads needed to weave the next row, in this case there are ten beads creating this narrow banding. Before turning your needle upwards and running it back inside the same row of beads, above the warps (the usual loom weaving methods), pick up another edge bead from the other side. Now you can continue the loom weaving technique of going back through the row of beads, keeping your needle above the warps. When you exit on the starting side, pick up another edge bead, just as you did in the first step described. Continue weaving these steps until you reach the desired length of weave you need. This Trice Edging Style, creates a simple edge with the edge beads sitting on their sides. This also finishes the weave to a classic look, no holes or threads showing! I have many other variations of this same method, creating edges much more intricate then this. In the meantime, you can experiment with adding more or less beads and additional warps full of beads! If you plan on creating a scalloped type edge, you'll need to keep those warps free for movement as the warp threads will be used up or longer, than what you attach to the loom.

Blues are slated to be big this Fall, and I love the shades Pantone includes in their Fall Color Report, especially when paired with the trendy neutral, Aluminum. Classic blues and silver-grays were the colors I chose to work with for today's A Time to Stitch Challenge hosted by Christine Altmiller and Therese Frank. Our challenge was to take one stitch and make three designs with it, changing up the beads in each - either the size, color, shape or finish. The purpose of our exercise was to observe how bead choices affect the overall character of the design. My stitch for this challenge is right angle weave and the design is the very chic O. Mosaic Cuff from Rachel Nelson Smith's Seed Bead Fusion. My first cuff is five rows wide in blue pewter and sterling silver size 15 Japanese charlottes. Bright Cobalt is the star of this cuff with accents of the not-quite-gray, not-quite silver Aluminum. Light and delicate, the cut surfaces of the charlottes shimmer metallic on the wrist and give this cuff a definite special-occasion quality. Rachel offers several design options for the cuff and I took this one directly from the pages of her book. Still the O. Mosaic pattern, but for my second piece, I came up with my own design variation. Color blocking and round size 11 seed beads make this version instantly more casual. I went bi-tonal with the Aluminum, weaving in a matte and a metallic shade with the classic blue. At four rows wide, it's the same width as the charlotte version, but the slightly larger beads, smooth surfaces, and combination of finishes make this cuff appear much heavier. I'm just starting my third design. At three rows of size 15's, it will be a skinny version. The blue is royal, the silver-gray is understated, and I think the minimal matte-metallic gold is really going to pop! This has been a fun and very enlightening exploration of bead choices and how they impact the finished design. Many thanks to Christine and Therese for continuing to challenge all of us. (I, for one, am hoping there will be more!) I hope you'll have time to check out the work of all the participating designers: Hosts: Therese Christine Participants Kim Maryanne Lola Dagi Shirley LiliKrist Amy Crystie Sally Cynthia Bobbie LizE Becky Pancake Karin G.
