Blood had a mystical connotation to the ancient Hebrews that is a bit hard for us to grasp today, as we tend to see it scientifically in terms of its function to carry oxygen and nutrients to the cells of the body. But in ancient times, it was considered more like the life essence of a creature, second only perhaps to breath. We are “washed in the Blood of the Lamb” because nothing less than the very life of God was sufficient as a sacrifice to redeem us from our sins. This is as true today as it ever has been, and ever will be. Per spiritu sanctu semet ipsum obtulit immauclatulatu deo is Latin which translates as, “By the Holy Spirit, he offered himself undefiled to God.” Christ was God and at the same time Man, and as man, a perfect, undefiled man. This beautiful picture is the Eucharist on the altar. It was done by Benedictine monks in the 19th Century in the school of art centered at their monastery in Beuron, Germany. The style is called Beuron (pronounced BOY–ron), and it was religious art deliberately distinct from anything else of the day. They used an invisible plan of triangles and circles (of which each piece has many intricately arranged) to achieve a platonic structure in their art. They were reaching for holiness and perfection to help the viewer in their worship and meditation of God. We hope that this restored picture helps you in your worship and meditation of our Lord. The artist’s draft for this chalice is from the Benedictine Archabbey in the upper Danube Valley, Beuron, Germany. The Bueron Art School created forms using elaborate combinations of circles and equilateral triangles. Normally these shapes aren’t overtly seen in their art, but in this exquisite diagram we can see all the thought and artistic choices that went into the design. We love this print for its beauty and its Platonic implication of the ideas that inform the physical world. This is an especially nice gift for anyone in the sciences or engineering, and of course for priests. We immediately put it up at our house, even though we are neither scientists nor engineers nor priests! :) It looks great in one of our old wooden bookshelves. The June 1912 date in the lower right hand corner we believe was a document control mark used so the goldsmiths could make sure they had the most recent drawing. The Archabbey had huge additions built during the 19th and 20th Centuries, with many artist’s concept paintings and drawings used in planning, such as this one. To give an idea of the Archabbey’s size, their library has over 400,000 books. The print is really sharp, and the color is subdued but rich. The print is long out of copyright and is now in the public domain. We spent considerable time restoring it. We print it on special art paper with archival quality pigments, rated to last for many generations without fading when kept out of the direct sun. ** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a white border of about 0.5" inch for 5x7", 1.3" for 8.5x11", or 1.6" for 11x14" pictures. All Approx! Fine art printers do this because the images are almost never the same rectangular ratio of the standard paper sizes. It also gives the prints a finished look, and lets them look good in a frame without a matt. – Acid-free paper – Archival pigments, rated to last for generations. – Cardboard backer – Above story of the art – Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag.
