A glorious Male here. The late great Eric Hoskins who lost an eye to a irate Tawny owl studied these birds at large estate in Suffolk in the 30's . In those days these stunners had many local haunts throughout East Anglia. My Uncle knew of many sites throughout the Brecks when he served as Head ranger of Thetford forest, sadly these sites are mostly devoid of them now. As a child I remember them feeding on Beech mast at Santon Downham, and nesting on a private estate near Wangford, and Swaffham. Today the best places to see them in large numbers are Eastern Europe. In fact, now scarce in the UK as a breeding bird, they are still numerous in many countries.
