The Legend of the Blue Willow China is the story about 2 "Love Doves" Koong and Chang.... This pattern was produced in England in the 1700's but probably was copied from a Chinese pattern. The legend about the china began around 1849 when it was printed in an English magazine as a very romantic story about a young couple. A wealthy young woman named Koong fell in love with Chang who was just a poor secretary. She was forbidden to marry him or even see him. Her father demanded she stay at home and quickly made arrangements for her to marry a man of financial security. Escaping from her home, she met up with Chang and the couple fled across a bridge to an island. In hot pursuit, Koong's father follows but suddenly the couple are transformed into love doves who fly away to safety. No wonder we love this pattern so much - maybe your mother had it? Reposted from 2009!

China with it's patterns can be most beguiling. No pattern could be more so than Blue Willow. The legend was created to promote the sales of Minton's original china pattern. There are several versions of the legend that have circulated, but this is my favorite. This china pattern has clearly stood the test of time, most likely due to it's fantastic marketing with this romantic story. The Willow Legend There was once a Mandarin who had a beautiful daughter, Koong-se. He employed a secretary, Chang who, while he was attending to his master's accounts, fell in love with Koong-se, much to the anger of the Mandarin, who regarded the secretary as unworthy of his daughter. The secretary was banished and a fence constructed around the gardens of the Mandarin's estate so that Chang could not see his daughter and Koong-se could only walk in the gardens and to the water's edge. One day a shell fitted with sails containing a poem, and a bead which Koong-se had given to Chang, floated to the water's edge. Koong-se knew that her lover was not far away. She was soon dismayed to learn that she had been betrothed to Ta-jin, a noble warrior Duke. She was full of despair when it was announced that her future husband, the noble Duke, was arriving, bearing a gift of jewels to celebrate his betrothal. However, after the banquet, borrowing the robes of a servant, Chang passed through the guests unseen and came to Koong-se's room. They embraced and vowed to run away together. The Mandarin, the Duke, the guests, and all the servants had drunk so much wine that the couple almost got away without detection, but Koong-se's father saw her at the last minute and gave chase across the bridge. The couple escaped and stayed with the maid that Koong-se's father had dismissed for conspiring with the lovers. Koong-se had given the casket of jewels to Chang and the Mandarin, who was also a magistrate, swore that he would use the jewels as a pretext to execute Chang when he caught him. One night the Mandarin's spies reported that a man was hiding in a house by the river and the Mandarin's guards raided the house. But Chang had jumped into the ragging torrent and Koong-se thought that he had drowned. Some days later the guards returned to search the house again. While Koong-se's maid talked to them, Chang came by boat to the window and took Koong-se away to safety. They settled on a distant island, and over the years Chang became famous for his writings. This was to prove his undoing. The Mandarin heard about him and sent guards to destroy him. Chang was put to the sword and Koong-se set fire to the house while she was still inside. Thus they both perished and the gods, touched by their love, immortalized them as two doves, eternally flying together in the sky. The Legend Behind the Blue Willow China Pattern: The pattern may look idyllic but the story behind the Blue Willow pattern is one of forbidden, star-crossed love! According to collectors, the pattern tells the story of a wealthy merchant named Tso Ling who had a beautiful daughter named Kwang-se. The father and daughter resided in a beautiful pagoda, situated under a pine tree next to a bridge. Tso Ling promised his daughter's hand in marriage to a wealthy businessman associate of his. Unbeknownst to Tso Ling, Kwang-se fell in love with Chang, her father's kind and handsome but poor clerk. When Tso Ling found out about the secret relationship, he was furious. To prevent the affair from interfering with the plans he made for his Kwang-se, he kept Kwang-se locked up. The two managed to elope across the sea to a cottage. As legend has it, Tso Ling would not stand for this and went after them by boat. He was about to have them killed when the gods intervened and transformed the lovers into turtle doves. Look closely at the plates and you'll notice several features of the story, including the two doves gazing into each other's eyes at the top of the design. As you might imagine, the dramatic story has inspired many plays, books, poems and, of course, beautiful ceramics of all shapes and colors.

Can I keep it? It gets along great with my Dollar Store plates. And it's very quiet. This was the best (and scariest) part. (After unpacking, I was very happy to discover only 2 pieces were chipped and from the appearance of the chips, they happened before these pieces were tossed together to become a ‘boxed set.’) Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

Here I have all the elements except the three people crossing the bridge. Plus a couple of things that don't exist yet (but are being built, credit crunch or not). Actually I have two bridges (the Ha'Penny Hatch footbridge and the DLR) across the creek instead of just one (when there are in reality also two road bridges). The Mandarin's house is a jumble of new and old buildings; the newer ones are gated communities. The island is the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf. The two skyscraper images are taken from the developer's hoardings at "Creekside Village" and "Greenwich Reach", their height determined by the cranes currently in place. Yes, they really will be that tall. The building on the left has an exaggerated perspective because it will have a triangular base, but this is how the developer wants it to be seen...terrorising the locals. This same developer has had his architects draw up plans for the whole of the area, featuring endless repetitions of this building all the way down my road. Dubai on my doorstep. Naturally, the birds are vultures. I am still working on this collage...In his book Willow! David Richard Quintner suggests the Willow image, based as it is on elements of Chinese design, takes one vital aspect from the Chinese, that of non-Western perspective. It is an aerial view. Quintner speculates that the Chinese invented the hot-air balloon well before the French (a hot-air balloon featured strongly in the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony this year, without comment from the BBC team covering the event)...either way, ballooning was the technological advance of its day when the Willow Pattern was introduced...
