The 50th and l;ast member of the 86 class was delivered as a Bo-Bo-Bo as a trial unit. This wheel arrangement was intended to see what reduction in track deflection, rail wear and flange wear could be obtained in comparison with the usual Co-Co wheel arrangement. It spent long periods out of traffic undergoing repair.
Following the decision to electrify the North Coast line from Brisbane to Rockhampton, the last 30 of a 1984 order for 80 3500/3600 class locomotives were modified for passenger and general freight use, and delivered as the 3900 class. Their bodies were modified to allow them to pass through Brisbane's tunnels and they received higher gearing to allow them to operate at passenger speeds of 100 km/h (62 mph). Eleven are stored and 19 were converted to 3550 class.
In July 1984, a joint venture of Clyde Engineering and Walkers Limited was contracted for 70 3500/3600 class electric locomotives with ASEA electrical equipment. These were ordered to operate coal trains on the Blackwater and Goonyella railway lines that were in the process of being electrified. Bodies were built and assembled at Walkers's Maryborough factory with Clyde Engineering responsible for some of the electrical equipment and commissioning the locomotives. To provide more locomotives with the impending opening of the Ensham coal mine, Clyde Engineering were awarded a contract to build 13 - later extended to 22 - 3300/3400 class electric locomotives.
