This old discarded book made into a music box has been a thought rolling around in my head since my Music Box Project Class this year at the Club Scrap retreat. Finally it was time to put it together! AND glad I took the time! Now, this old book has become a cute little keepsake currently sitting on my coffee table. Also at Club Scrap, the Music Box Mechanism was available separately, so I had what I needed to get started. Crank it up and it plays "Fur Elise", love it! On the inside, I cut three nooks from the inner pages. One large enough for the 2"x1-3/4" music box mechanism to go inside, then one for holding maybe photos or jewelry, and the smallest nook holds a little bottle. I made the smallest nook more shallow to accommodate for a secret matchbox drawer below. Cutting a little nook into the pages behind the key hole hardware so the end of the key can fit inside seemed like a good idea too. Well, ya know, while your at it, you might as well do it right! There is a hole drilled through the book's back cover to let the music box crank work freely. Now for a couple pictures concerning the construction. I started with the easiest step, stamping the front cover with the Vogue Love Is Eternity Stamp. Then moved onto cutting the inside pages. Along with all the cutting, I would have to say gluing all the pages together was my least favorite part, but still enjoyed the progress of each step and getting to decorate it in the end, and especially now that it plays music!!! Who else has an altered book that they can crank up? Anyone? Anyone? I wish I could say I carved the heart with wings wooden pc that is now attached to the lid myself, but I happened to see it in the clearance bin at Michaels Craft store. It was bare unfinished wood and attached to a frame, after it got it home I was able to use a large knife to free the glued on heart/wings from the frame. Then it just needed some acrylic paint and distressing before it embellished my altered book music box project. The possibilities of book altering are certainly endless, and this was a really fun altered book to show you, hoping you like! I'm off to crank up my altered book. Kay
Way back in November, on an airplane coming home from a family Thanksgiving celebration, I said to myself, "Now, what am I going to do?...

I know the title grabbed you...didn't it? I'm linkin' up with my buddy Holly from Fourth Grade Flipper for Tried It Tuesday. Some of you may have noticed I have been missin'....never fear..I'm back. Last week was filled with a whole lot of awesomeness, but I'll save that for the end. Lots and lots of pictures ahead! Tried It #1 Awesomeness: Book in a Box by Rachel Lynette My kids LOVED this activity. I sent this home and gave the kids two weeks time to complete their book in a box about the book they were currently readin' independently. This was a great way for me to stick with my plan of gettin' rid of nightly readin' folders, but still checkin' on them to see if they are actually readin' at home like they tell me they are. We made a deal earlier in the year and so far, they are stickin' to it. What I love about the Book in a Box...1)It's FREE 2)It had very specific instructions 3)It had a rubric Examples...They were all so awesome and very diverse, but I couldn't put them all up: Love all the materials that were added for this Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling box More of the Harry Potter box includin' wand Another Harry Potter in an Invisibility Cloak and a Golden (chocolate) Snitch Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Swindle by Gordon Korman Inside the Swindle box The Help by Kathryn Stockett decorated with Duck Tape Inside the box with a Poo Pie and Toilet Paper Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (not to be confused with the movie Alice in Wonderland) The hole that Alice falls into next to a mini Alice's Adventures in Wonderland illustrated book Inside the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland box. Up close in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland box. Love the "Drink Me" bottle Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton Look at the tiny little Bible! 12 Finally by Wendy Mass Love that the cards are numbered for each item and have their own little pocket. The Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle. My student said this book is "LOL". I agree. I always love readin' this one aloud because the kids laugh uncontrollably. The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart Tried It #2 Awesomeness: Twerkin' I know what you're thinkin'....SERIOUSLY, ALISON? It's okay...I wasn't very good at it. Two weeks ago I told you that I tried Zumba(insert evil laugh). I didn't have an opportunity to go last week(keep readin' to find out why), but I went again today. Are you proud of me for goin' back? I'm sure my co-workers were thrilled(insert eye roll and another evil laugh). I got to freestyle and I chose "twerkin". Twerkin' has been all the hype lately, so today we(the Zumba goers) watched the Stevie TV-Twerkin' Intervention(VH1) video before we started Zumba. If you have ever watched A & E's real show...Intervention AND you have a sense of humor, you need to find this video on YouTube. I could not stop laughin'...beware...not appropriate for children. So...twerkin' I tried. Of course I didn't add pictures to this again...nope, nope, nope! One of my wonderful teammates and my awesome instructor, Ashley, makes me tired just watchin' her dance all around. She does it more than once a week; once is enough for me. Ashley was the one who suggested I should do twerkin' as my Tried It Tuesday. She's so funny and I couldn't let her down. Weekend Awesomeness: Murder Mystery Dinner, Afternoon Weddin', & Goin' Away Party Thursday: Jerm's little brother got married this past weekend. We had a 1920's Murder Mystery Rehearsal Dinner...so much FUN! The bride ordered the script online and we all got our parts ahead of time, in order to know how to dress for the occasion. My character was Rosie Marie, the owner of the Juice Joint. I got to introduce everyone to the party and be my bossy self...love! My(Rosie Marie's) "nephew", Cy Ramsey. Rosie Marie(me) with one of the gangsters, Mugsy Malone aka Jerm. The whole gang. Couldn't have picked a better crew of people to experience this night with! Friday: The bride and groom had a lovely outdoor weddin' at one of our local State Parks. I had the honor of settin' up the reception and coordinatin' the order of events durin' the ceremony. This was a TOUGH job for sure, but worth every single minute. I thought teachin' was hard...tryin' to round up guys in tuxedos and girls in heels in Florida, on a sunny afternoon, while keepin' them all quiet...well, it was a little like herdin' cats. I wouldn't trade this experience for any in the world. All the gorgeous bridesmaids and handsome groomsmen with the beautiful bride and groom! Jerm & I at the reception. Saturday: On the third day of special occasions and me bein' in a dress and make-up, I attended a goin' away party for some dear friends. By this time, I was absolutely wiped out. I THOUGHT we were supposed to dress up for a California theme, so I went with Khloe Kardashian...she's tall, I'm tall(that's about where the similarities end). The other two girls were supposed to be Kim and Kourtney. They say they were...just blonde Kardashians. The jury is still out on this one. Kourtney(my buddy Jen), Khloe(me), and Kim(my roomie Sharon) I've got lots of laundry and blogs to catch up on. P.S. I've been tryin' to make some changes...I haven't had a Diet Coke in THREE days, but I did have to take a THREE hour nap yesterday before watchin' the Saints beat the Dolphins. I earned it after such a busy weekend...don't ya think? Have a great week! Be sure to check out Holly's blog for everyone else's Tuesday posts!

The first step into making the hollow book is to select a book. Make sure this is a book your own, and not one belonging to the library, or your family. I suggest rummaging through books at yard/garage sales. Make sure it is a hardback; otherwise you will cut all the way through the other side when you are cutting out the insides. You'll also need: Elmer's white glue a container to hold glue solution (I've chosen a film canister) X-acto knife, and/or box cutter. Both if you have them brush to apply glue solution pencil/pen ruler, or other rigid straight edge Select a page that you want to be the first one cut out, and save that page to be cut out at the end. (I'll explain later) Even if you don't want to save any pages at the beginning of the book, you must set one aside for a later step. Mix a solution of white glue and water. Just enough for the glue to be runny, and absorbed by the edge of the book's pages. 50% to 70% glue (30% to 50% water) worked well for me. - Half a film canister full was enough for this book. Holding the remaining pages together, brush the edges with the glue solution - enough to soak in pretty well, but not too drippy. Allow this to dry, but use a spacer so the first couple pages, and the front cover don't get stuck. I spaced mine with post-it notes, and used some old hard disk platters to apply pressure. It dries quickly- about 15 to 30 min When dry, open the book to the first glued page. Draw out a half-inch boarder around the edge on all four sides. (Don't forget along the spine too.) Using a strait edge and knife, cut out along the inside of the line. Try to make the cut as vertical as possible, or else try to tilt so the hole will narrow as you go down. Continue cutting down through the layers. I found that a box cutter was easier to keep straight. This part takes a long time. I recommend listening to music while you work. Watching TV though could be distracting, and you could also cut a page out of your finger. (no, I didn't.) The longer you spend on it, the smoother and straighter the inside edges of your book will be. My first attempts at this yielded rough edges, but the fuzz flattens down a little when glued (later). After a while, you can store some of your tools in it while you take breaks. I did this book in 2 evenings. When you get to the back of the book, and through the last page, stop. Dump out all the little paper fuzz that inevitably comes from the cutting. Next, brush the glue solution on the inside edges of the pages. Give it a bit to soak in. A little bit of drippiness is okay, as the glue dries clear. This is also a good time to apply a second coat to the outside of the pages with the excess glue. Brush the rim of the book with a light coat of glue. This will affix it to that one page we saved earlier (and will cut through later). Close the book again, this time without any spacers. Give it another 15-30 minutes to dry. Clean up any glue that drips on your desk, like it did mine. Remember that first page we saved? It’s now glued to the rest of the book. Lets all turn there now. Cut through this first page with your knife to open it. The insides of the book may still be a little gooey since there was no air inside to let it dry. -So let it dry now. When it’s dry, you're done! Fill it with whatever treasured items (or contraband) you choose. Happy hiding. Reproduced with permission from the author: Aud1073cH
Box making is one of the skills a bookbinder should master. There are many types and styles of boxes: slipcase boxes and clamshell boxes for books; small boxes and boxes with many compartments and drawers for jewelry, gifts and small things; portfolios, trays and curved boxes for different needs. Every box has something special about how it is made. Boxes are also very important for archival and conservation projects. In this post we have gathered some of the best box making tutorials you can find on the Internet. You can find the list of materials in the end. Please check other tutorial collections we have prepared for you at iBookBinding.com: Top 10 Coptic Stitch Binding Tutorials Top 15 Japanese Stab Binding Tutorials Top 10 Long Stitch Bookbinding Tutorials Top 10 Secret Belgian Binding Tutorials Top 10 Headband Tutorials #1 Slipcase Boxes for Books We begin with slipcase boxes, because when you think about a box for a book slipcase is one of the first things that comes to one’s mind. However, many bookbinders suppose them to be not the best solution — even boxes that are specially made to be not so tight may damage edges of book covers when you take the book out of the box and put it back. The other important drawback of a slipcase box is that many users drag the book of the box pulling by the back (near the endband) — that may ruin the book cover. In perfect conditions book should easily slip out of the box (but not so easy that it would drop out), however readers themselves should also know how to use slipcase not to damage the book. That gives too many options for a book to be ruined even if the slipcase is perfectly made. Still many bookbinders use slipcase boxes because that’s a very traditional design. For example as a companion for a French binding. #2 Clamshell Box While slipcase boxes are used almost exclusively for books, you may put almost anything into a clamshell box. The latter gives a much better protection for a book. It may be made as tight as it is needed and the book would stay put in there. You may also design special trays to lift the book if you don’t want it to be touched. Clamshell boxes may be made for long and for small objects. You may even make a clamshell box with several sections. To keep miniature books, for example. Another variety of clamshell boxes is half clamshell box — it has only one tray and a cover lid. It is more like the cigar box. The tricky thing with half clamshell boxes is to make the cover to stay in place when the box is closed. Once again we share a video tutorial by Sage Reynolds, luckily he have made many and they are really nice! =) Please find some other examples here: About Clamshell Boxes by Henry Hébert Clamshell Box For Seven Miniature Shakespeare Books Clamshell Box vs. Half Clamshell Box If you prefer PDF instructions to video tutorials, please check here =) #3 Hugo Peller’s Pop-Up Box That exotic structure is a mix of a clamshell and slipcase boxes. It may help you to solve one of the problems all slipcases have — you don’t need to pull the book from the box by the back. But it would eliminate the friction. For almost any type of boxes listed in this post it would be easier to make a box if you decide to use double layer of board like in this example (http://paperiaarre.blogspot.ru/2012/08/non-linear-notebook-box-tutorial.html). It makes your box heavier and thicker, but that wouldn’t really be a problem even for a standard-sized book. Hugo Peller’s Pop-Up Box Tutorial at the Book Arts Web #4 Cigar Box You may use cigar box for a book, but the tray has walls on all four sides and that makes it not so convenient to take the book out of the box. At the same time it is a perfect solution for small objects, or things like photographs. Another video tutorial by Sage Reynolds. #5 Hidden Compartment Box I’ve put it here mare like a fun thing. But maybe you will like the idea and diced to make some boxes with hidden compartments =) #6 Single Tray Box That type of a box is something both similar to clamshell boxes and portfolios. You still have a tray, but you cover it with two flaps — almost like portfolio. I personally like that type of a box the most — it has a rather simple structure, but you can make it to look really nice. Single Tray Box Tutorial at the About the Binding #7 Portfolio Strictly speaking, portfolio is not a box. But many stages of making a portfolio remind of making a box and a bookbinder should definitely know how to make a portfolio. There are different types of portfolios. Here is one of the standard styles. Portfolio with Soft Flaps Tutorial at the Book Arts Web #8 Chipboard Boxes You may also use the standard bookbinder’s Davey board for that sort of boxes. I don’t really like that structure because the sides hold only by the covering material. Boards are not glued to each other at the edges. It may be an easy and light construction that takes almost no time to be made, but it is not a durable type of a box. Here is a clamshell box tutorial, but really should be placed with other chipboard boxes tutorials, because the sides of trays are not glued together but scored and folded. That’s a less time consuming method, but the box would be rather unstable. A couple more video tutorials: #9-10 Boxes with Drawers and Compartments Almost any type of boxes listed above may be turned into a box with drawers and compartments. By the way, it is almost the only other use of a slipcase box, besides holding a book, when you put a drawer inside =) Of course there are some special designs of boxes that are made to have many drawers and compartments inside. Here you can find two examples: Box with four drawers Box with many compartments Materials and Tools PVA glue and methyl cellulose Davey board Chipboard sheets Book cloth Cutting mat Bone folder Utility knife Bookbinding brushes or rollers for gluing Further Reading As a bonus check these teaching models by Big Jump Press. You can easily see how all the cuts should be made for perfect corners. I haven’t listed several nice types of boxes here. One of them is round boxes. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any nice tutorial that will show how to make round boxes the way I was taught at the American Academy of Bookbinding by Peter Geraty. I suppose I’ll have to prepare a tutorial before posting 10 More Box Making Tutorials on the Internet =) Smart Archival Boxes, Trays and Portfolios Quick and Dirty Box Making Jig Top 10 Coptic Stitch Binding Tutorials Top 15 Japanese Stab Binding Tutorials Top 10 Long Stitch Bookbinding Tutorials Top 10 Secret Belgian Binding Tutorials Top 10 Headband Tutorials on the Internet Please Support us on Patreon! New to the reverse harem bestsellers list this week.
Hi, Sheila here-the "other" crafting sister from Two Crafting Sisters and before we get started I'd just like to say thank you for asking Maura and I to do a guest post. We are both honored. I like to do two things when crafting---1. Make mini books and 2. Use items already in my stash. This little expanding folder mini book does just that. It is easy to make from scratch and you most likely already have everything that you need. I started with little #1 coin envelopes that measure 3 1/2" x 2 1/4". A simple search on Google or Amazon will give you lots of choices-you can also find these at your local office supply type store or in a pinch, simply cut down an envelope to size and seal the cut side to form the pocket. You will also need heavy chipboard or cardboard pieces to make the box. Cut two pieces that measure 3 3/4" x 2 1/2", two pieces that measure 3/4" x 2 1/2" and one piece that measures 1 3/4" x 2 1/2". Also cut your pieces of patterned papers in these same sizes as well as one long piece that measures 2 1/2" x 12" (you will trim off the excess once your pieces are adhered down.) Adhere the patterned paper to the chipboard pieces. If you want to distress the edges or ink them, now is the time to do that. Then adhere these pieces to the long patterned piece as shown in the photo leaving about a 1/16" gap between pieces. You'll see why next. Now, gently bend the box into shape. You can also distress the front side of your box now if desired. I used a red Distress Ink to cover the chipboard sides and also used a bit of sandpaper around the box edges. Gather your coin envelopes. Cut inserts out of cardstock that measure 3 5/8" x 2". Apply adhesive down the center of the back of the envelopes and adhere them one to another to form a stack. By only adhering down the center, you will get this accordion effect. Now with the last envelope, apply adhesive on the entire back of the envelope and adhere the stack to the back panel of the book (and in this photo you can also see the magnets I used to close my book. Now is the time to add those if you so choose so that the one will be hidden from view. However, you could also close these with Velcro dots or a ribbon. Your choice.) Also apply adhesive to the entire back of the front envelope. When you stick it down to the cover, run your finger along the envelope edges to make sure it is adhered. Here is the inside of the mini book. I punched out circles, folded them in half and stapled them on the inserts for pull tabs. Once I got started on these, I couldn't stop! This little mini book used envelopes that were even smaller at 2 3/4" x 1 3/4". I covered them with dictionary papers before adhering them together and I made tiny little library cards for the insides. And on this one I cut the flap to make a tag and had it oriented differently. The possibilities are endless. Enjoy! Patterned papers-Tim Holtz and Cosmo Cricket Blog-http://www.twocraftingsisters.blogspot.com/

Happy July! How are we halfway through 2023? This ride is too fast. At least we have a lot of great RH books to look forward to reading! Release dates are fluid; I'll try to take a peek and update as I can. Please don't hesitate to let me know if something has shifted or if I've missed a book. Be well, and happy reading! Paige P.S. I do my best guessing on some of these, based on the book description. If I've inadvertently included something that isn't a RH, please let me know so I can remove it. :) Thank you! P.P.S. I'm going to be out again, so the best seller post is going to be delayed until Monday evening. There will not be a post about what books I read this week, I'll double up next Friday, I ran out of time today. Ah, Summer. :) Have a lovely weekend!
