The year is 2027. Lara Kingsley is a tough-as-nails Army vet and struggling private investigator. When her best friend and colleague Sully drops dead at a baseball game, all the signs point to murder. Lara is determined to find out who killed him and why. Her sleuthing leads her to Sully’s last case and the anonymous client he was working for, Killerbot. With the help of the local police and her FBI ex-boyfriend, Lara wades into the world of international espionage, high-tech crime, and revenge. It quickly becomes clear that Sully’s death was part of a much bigger plot and that many innocent people will die if Lara and her colleagues can’t find a way to stop Killerbot and his swarms of deadly beetles. Bionic Bug, written by Natasha Bajema, is a fantastic science fiction mystery set in the near future. Bajema weaves a stunning tale full of suspense and gritty, realistic characters. Her descriptions are beautifully evocative. Lara is a great heroine. She feels very real in her struggles and emotions, and in the mistakes she makes. She’s strong and determined but emotionally vulnerable and struggling, all at once. Refreshingly, the law enforcement characters were smart and competent, and the forensics and police work felt accurate. Even the bad guys had believable motives and were fairly well-rounded. The mystery was incredibly intricate and well-thought-out. The twists and turns and red herrings will keep readers guessing until the very end. For anyone who loves suspense and high-tech thrillers, Bionic Bug is a must-read.

Lightning Bug Lantern is an adventure storybook for children written by Andrea Skuta and illustrated by Julie Wells. Maggie loved the summer vacations which she spent with her grandmother. They stayed in the little trailer by the lake, and every day was filled with adventure and fun. She particularly looked forward to that time of the day when the sun had set and darkness was just drawing in. If she focused and watched carefully, she could spot the first lightning bugs as they began to shine brightly in the dark. Maggie loved catching lightning bugs, and she and her grandmother worked hard to catch enough to fill Maggie’s jar. A full jar, Grandma, had told Maggie, would become a lightning bug lantern, a magical and light-filled addition to their campsite. Each night they tried, but they never seemed able to get enough fireflies to make that lantern. Maggie began to fret and wonder if they would ever succeed, but Grandma knew they’d be able to do it. Andrea Skuta’s Lightning Bug Lantern is a captivating look at one of the high points of summer -- the magical appearance of lightning bugs at dusk. She adroitly pairs it with the perfect partnership of a young girl and her grandmother. Julie Wells’ illustrations are enchanting, each panel working perfectly with the story line. I loved seeing Maggie and Grandma catch-and-release fish and enjoy the sand and water at the beach. And those nights they spend surrounded by stars and the glow of the lightning bugs! Lightning Bug Lantern is an awesome summer read that will have readers dreaming of their own lighting bug lanterns and summer vacations by the lake. A grand selection for story time, this book is also an excellent primer for new readers to try on their own. Lightning Bug Lantern is most highly recommended.
Ever have one of those days where a fly or another type of insect seemed to be following you around, being an annoyance during every activity, and no matter how many times you swatted or shooed it away, it just kept coming back? The Bug Came Back by Stacie Morrell offers young children a chance to view brightly colored pictures while reading a humorous rhyming text. The author introduces young readers to the experience of being pestered. The brightly colored pictures, rhyming text, and funny plot allow this story to reach out and grasp a child's attention. The book also offers children a sense of routine. For example, throughout the book, a reader will follow the character's entire day as they are being pestered by a fly. A child may be able to relate their own daily routine to that of the character's in the book. Although the character ignored the problem all day while it bothered them, in the end they could no longer ignore it and had to make a decision. This teaches a young reader that it is easier to deal with a problem right away than have it bother you the entire day before making a decision about what to do about it. Stacie Morrell has written an amusing book that most adults and children can relate to one way or another as they think about a pesky fly that has bothered them throughout their own day. I enjoyed the rhythm of the story, the colorful illustrations, and the humorous plot. A ‘just for fun’ kind of read for young children.

Zeke Sees a Bug is a story based on a real dog rescued from an animal shelter by the author, Kelly Robertson. The beautiful illustrations by John Konecny are conclusive proof that, whatever had happened in the past, Zeke fell on his paws in his new home with the Robertsons; in every picture he is sleeping on their bed! At first, he’s taking a peaceful nap, but he is disturbed by a bug crawling up the outside of the bedroom window and down again. This is interesting, amusing even, until the bug comes to investigate Zeke and flies around buzzing in a very annoying way. Zeke succeeds in catching it under one of his big paws, but what does he do next? He could kill it, or he could let it go. Zeke Sees a Bug by Kelly Robertson is a super picture book to read to young children, especially as a bedtime story since it ends with Zeke fast asleep. There’s plenty of time for a child to look at each coloured drawing; words on the pages vary from one, “Thwomp”, to nine. I particularly liked the repetition. “The bug plods up the window. Plink, plink plink,” and “The bug plods down the window. Plonk, plonk, plonk.” There’s a subtle message too. Even though the dog is so big that one paw more than covers the bug and Zeke could have killed the pest, he doesn’t; he lets it fly free. Being bigger and stronger isn’t an excuse to be a bully.
