Several months back a wonderful lady, Nannet, emailed me and asked me to create a craft that would teach kids all about the vestments that priests wear during Mass. Her craft idea didn't sound too hard so I told her I'd give it a try. I began to search for information about priests' vestments, but

The Science of Reading emphasizes how important vocabulary development is in students comprehending what they are reading. The research says the best way to increase a student's vocabulary is through reading, but we all have those students who are reluctant readers. No child hates reading and it is best said by James Patterson: "There is no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading and kids who read the wrong books." By teaching the genres we can help our students discover different types of books and find the type of book they enjoy reading. It can also help students get out of their reading ruts and discover new reading adventures. These are activities to help your students learn about the different genres and guide them in finding a book they enjoy reading. What's Included: Genre Bingo - Students work together to read the different genres on the class bingo card. As a student reads a genre and fills out the genre book response, they mark off that genre square on the bingo card. When the class gets a bingo, they celebrate. Genre Cards - The cards list simple definitions of the genres. Genre Match Up - Students match the genre example with the name of the genre. Genre Book Response - Students quickly fill out the genre of the book and why they thought the book they read fits that genre. Highlighted Genres: Realistic Fiction Historical Fiction Science Fiction Adventure & Survival Fantasy Mysteries *** There are 5 sets of this activity for you to choose from in different colors. This includes the Bingo Cards and Genre Cards. Blue Orange Pink Green Black and Gold Teacher Tips of how to use the resource are included.

Today we talked about King Benjamin. You can download his Scripture Hero Chart here. There are many wonderful things that King Benjamin taught, but I thought focusing on service and Mosiah 2:17 would be best for him. We watched the LDS Scripture video about King Benjamin. A Year of FHE has a wonderful lesson about King Benjamin I used it to help teach my kids about him and we also did this fun printable. They each colored something and then we looked up the scriptures listed and read them together. I got this coloring page to do from the church's website. It is a color by number coloring page. We used toothpicks and marshmallows to make our own towers since King Benjamin had a tower built so that he could be seen and heard by more people. I thought about different service things we could do and decided to keep it simple. I want my kids to realize that they can do simple acts of service each day especially in our own home. I suggested we make their Dad's "lunch" that he takes to work today (he works swing shift so lunch is really dinner). They loved the idea and even made him a little note for him. (My youngest did not want to be part of that picture) They were really excited to have their dad find out that we had made it for him and so he didn't have to do it. I think King Benjamin is awesome. We learn so much from his teachings.
