Margaret Nielson Armstrong (1867-1944) was the most productive and accomplished American book designer of the 1890s and early 1900s. Thematically and philosophically, her career places her squarely within the vibrant Arts and Crafts Movement in the United States. Her eclectic style - combining classical and art nouveau with its graceful symmetry and natural motifs, mainly floral in character, rooted in Japonisme and with Colonial, Native American and other motifs - resists easy characterization. Read more on Cassandra Considers In this little book a very large number of the commoner wild flowers growing in the United States, west of the Rocky Mountains, are pictured and described. It is the first attempt to supply a popular field book for the whole West. This is the only fully illustrated book of western flowers, except Miss Parsons's charming book, which is for California only. The drawings have all been made from life. Almost all technical botanical terms have been translated into ordinary English, as this book is intended primarily for the general public, but as a large number of the plants given have never before been illustrated, or even described, except in somewhat inaccessible or technical publications, it is hoped that the scientist also may find the contents both interesting and useful. Read more including a detailed account of the contents of the book. You can read the book on the Internet Archive. This is art deco at its best: stylized poppies rise against a deep blue-black sky. Lovely for a man or a woman. Personalization Details: Please let me know your personalization request in the required “add your personalization” field. In some cases I can include a middle and/or last name, feel free email me with any questions as each design is different. If you would like your bookplates blank, type in “leave blank”. Paper Info: Oiseaux Vintage Bookplates are printed on thick (48 lb.) bright, high-quality paper with gorgeous, vivid inks for superior color and image reproduction. They come ready for the adhesive of your choice; we like to recommend acid-free glue sticks for our bookplates: they are inexpensive, easy-to-use, and safe with all papers. You can find acid-free glue sticks online and in most drug stores or supermarkets; some popular brands are Avery, OfficeWorks, Elmer's and Uhu; most cost about a dollar. Occasionally I get asked if I print on adhesive paper, but because the print quality on even the best adhesive papers pales in comparison to the paper I use, I stick with the very good stuff. What is a bookplate? A bookplate is a name label that goes inside of a book, notebook, or journal. The use of bookplates dates back to a time when books were rare and precious things; a bookplate was a way to leave your name inside of a treasure. Today, bookplates have enjoyed a comeback as a sweet way to celebrate a new baby. For children, bookplates inspire a love of reading and a pride in ownership. What's not to love? Our designs come from my collection of vintage books from the 1920's, most of which belonged to my grandparents. I remember many of the books from when I was a child, and I am so happy to bring these gorgeous illustrations to life again! Creating each design is often a lot of work: since old books are usually well-loved, there can be quite a bit of repairing to do. Each vintage illustration is carefully scanned, cleaned, and brightened up... then sometimes completely redesigned to fit a bookplate format. The end product is what you see in my shop: beautiful vintage designs, waiting for your books! + + + Thank you for looking! Decorated bindings arose in the 1800s as a solution to book publishers' need for an inexpensive, durable, attractive book cover. Prior to the 1800s, just the pages of books were sold, allowing owners to have the books bound in the cover of their choosing. The decorated cloth bindings provided publishers with a cover that was more durable than paper, less expensive than leather, and quite attractive. These bindings remained in favor through the early 1900s, when they were replaced by illustrated paper dust jackets. Seen here is a selection of decorated bindings from the State Library's collection. More images are available on the library's Flickr site in the set "Decorated Bindings." Old hand embroidery and needlework books mesmerize me. Vintage embroidery books appeal to me more than new embroidery books do.
