The Victorian still-life painter William Hough began his career working in Coventry and later moved to London. He exhibited flower and fruit still lifes at the Royal Academy and at the New Watercolour Society between 1857 and 1894. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Coventry; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; and the Manchester City Art Gallery. Although he specialized in still lifes, Hough was also known to have painted landscapes. Hough was a follower of William Henry “Birds Nest” Hunt (1790-1864), an artist primarily remembered for his meticulously executed still lifes, and for his nickname — “Bird’s Nest,” because of his many pictures of bird’s nests tucked away in mossy banks or nestled among dry leaves. Hunt was a popular teacher whose subject matter, style, and technique were adapted by a host of imitators. Like the works of his mentor, Hough’s watercolors emphasize naturalness and an extraordinary attention to detail called for by the English critic and writer John Ruskin. His watercolors of fruits and flowers are striking, and he frequently assembled unusual groupings and compositions, as in Still Life of Peaches, Plums and Grapes, which is an unusually large work for him.

In Daniel Shipp's series Botanical Inquiry, the Sydney-based photographer explores how plants and flowers found at the edges of urban infrastructure fit into our modern world. Shipp collects seemingly unremarkable plants and photographs the subjects in built dioramas, an environment that allows him to manipulate the relationship between foreground and background with a controlled precision. Through this process he is able to create dramatic photographs in-camera, shooting digitally but using old visual effects techniques developed for early cinema. More

When I spied these in the farmers' market one Sunday, I literally gasped. I had never seen ginger root with this coloration and it's stems and leaves. Although I didn't show it in my painting, the stems can grow to about 3 feet. “Ginger Root with Stems” is available in the following sizes: 8”x10” / 11”x14” All sizes except the 5"x7" come with a mat so that the matted print can fit directly into a standard-sized frame. The 5"x7" prints is unmatted and fits in a 5"x7" frame as is. All prints are made with archival ink on heavyweight, acid-free fine art paper. Each print is hand-signed by me. I ship the prints in well protected eco-friendly, stay-flat mailers. It will come to you in a clear plastic sleeve, backed by rigid cardboard.
