Shadow Boxes, Diorama's and Theatre Dolls as art objects. Handmade curiosity cabinets displaying miniatures, puppets and art dolls

Servus and welcome to my little creative spot! It's time for our mid-month reminder post over at SanDee&amelie's Steampunk Challenges! Those who know me a bit, also know that I looooove found objects. Beautifully aged and timeworn bits and pieces that would tell stories from the past if they could only speak. And I love assemblage art! Assemblage art originates from the late 1800s, when sculptor Auguste Rodin already started to use casts made of his already finished pieces to combine these parts to form new pieces of art. Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp did assemblages too and now there are a lot of contemporary artists who create wonderful assemblage art. And I especially love the magical art of Joseph Cornell!!! For today's project I wanted to create a piece of assemblage art that consisted of found objects that could "speak for themselves" (instead of having to be altered or done over with special media to make them more appealing). I decided to use a beautiful little black box that I was recently given to by dear friends (who keep the good lookin' emptied boxes for me - which makes me a really lucky person to have such thoughtful and caring friends!) and some of my long hoarded treasures alongside a few bought embellishments to create this time travel box... The guy in the blue jumper was a collectible pin from a series that came with the Julius Meinl Coffee tins back when my grandma and grandaunts were young girls. I have an old tin with some more and an old diablo game that belonged to one of my grandaunts. But what good are these treasures if you don't put them out there so they can be looked at? So I decided it was time to shine some light on some of these old originals (like the pin, the threaded and other vintage buttons, the watchmakers tools in the little corked glass vial, the rusted spring and ring and the frozen charlotte) alongside some embellishments from Prima and the idea-ology range. The background and also cover of my box show my great-grandmother's passport! I made colour copies and sealed them with matte Decou-Page. I also used the Decou-Page to fix all the items to the box. Now I have some of my beloved treasures in a box nearby (instead of hidden away in tins and drawers), and if I take off the lid, I also have a little assemblage frame. As the objects are beautiful as they are, I decided to not add any paints or other media and keep their original state. I just needed to alter the look of the idea-ology "Salvaged" word band using alcohol inks to make it match the other objects' colours. I think the original colour from the yellowed passport paper, the shabby white of the frozen charlotte and the vintage buttons, the orange tones on the finnabair pieces and the rusty spring alongside the red from the thread that holds the passport pages together and from the stamp in the top right corner all go together really well! And the black box frame repeats the black of the writing - so all the elements fuse together beautifully. Only the blue jumper forms a little contrast - but that makes the oranges, browns and pale yellow-ish colours pop even more. Playing around with colours, shapes and composition was not only fun but also a very relaxing thing to do. And browsing my treasures in all their boxes and little drawers was very enjoyable too. ;) I hope to see you over at our challenge blog, where you will find all the other fabulous projects of Team B today! And of course I hope you will join in our challenge and have a lot of steampunk creating fun! Hugs and happy crafting, Claudia xxx

2018 Topic 21: Matchbox Art Hi everyone, Leandra here As Christmas nears (dare I say it, I have done nothing to prepare yet!) here is a lovely topic that can be used in a practical sense, perhaps table place settings, with a gift, maybe an advent calendar, or maybe for tree decorations, whatever you decide, the topic is very flexible - always handy when time is tight! This is our final Challenge of the year, there will be one more topic to round off the year, but no challenge with that one. Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 20: Foiling Challenge... The winner is: Mac Mable from The Sweetest of Peas I urge you to go and take a look, Mac actually made several samples over the course of the challenge, and a few went into the linked post above, but there were plenty of other beautiful entries this fortnight too! Thanks for joining us, it's nice to see your take on the challenge! Email Leandra to claim your prize. [email protected] So, back to our topic of the next 2 weeks...boy did I find it hard to select ideas, there are so many ways to go with this topic! Just like people have collected 'things' forever: stamps, coins, cards, so it is with matchboxes. Initially created as a practical tool to light a fire or perhaps a cigarette, the outer covers soon became a suitable place for images, advertising or seasonal themes, and hence matchbox collections were born. However, on this occasion, we are more interested on using the box itself as a mini structure. We do like to go small when making art, so this can be great fun, and many see, quite manageable, to tackle a smaller project, than a massive one. Here's a timely idea, an advent calendar blogged by Ally, that is super effective due to the restricted colour palette of kraft, red and white. Check out the link below the picture for more details on its creation. My Creative Space In fact, if that floats your boat, here is a link to a whole bunch of home-made Advent calendars. Within I discovered another matchbox style one hanging from a branch, and the matchboxes were covered with plywood. Again, the colour scheme brings cohesion and simplicity. The Merry Thought In 2013, Manoswelt (Mano's World) embarked on an annual project to create 365 boxes. Many of them are teeny tiny, and the details are astonishing! Check out her blog. December 2013, Mano's World Here is a close up of the one lower right from the earlier picture. A bunch of boxes within a box. It is hard to comprehend the scale of her project, but I adore the idea of a few boxes wrapped up this way, whether a piece of art in itself, or actual gifts, it's cool!! Spun By Me Still on the Christmas theme, Matchboxes as decorations is also going to add a personal touch to your tree. I'm sure you have plenty of images that would work to decorate boxes in this manner! Cute that both the cover and inside are being used to great effect! Kate Crane Here's a fun sample by Kate Crane with her Stampotique stamps. Similar in concept to the Darcy sample at the top of the page, it is fun to have legs that can 'grow' as you slowly open up a matchbox! Luciferdoosje There is a fantastic tutorial here from Kay Williamson who has created the most stunning tiny matchbox library, the detail of each book is astonishing! Kay's Keepsakes This post from Graphic 45 shows how a peek through to the interior can be fun too... Graphic 45 blog Here is a wearable matchbox by Gaby Bee, follow the link to see the reverse side, equally beautiful and therefore 2 wearable options in one composition! Gaby Bee, Colorful Adventure Annette Green I really like this hanging idea by Annette Green, created for G45. So many little details, and if you follow the photo link there is also a video for you of how she made this. Laura Carson Laura Carson designed this chest from Matchboxes for Alpha Stamps. I'm sure you can spot some Tim Holtz hardware in the mix too. As you can see, Laura also made a detailed video series of 2 parts, and a downloadable PDF, so there is plenty of info here if a larger project like this tickles your fancy! My Craft Room So this blew my mind, and clearly it took the lady, Norma, who made it a long time to figure out too! See here for more. She did this project for a Magnolia blog hop, and it is fabulous! She also generously shares the template too. Think of the drawers as pie shaped sections, and you will get there! Isn't it fabulous!! There are plenty more construction projects on my Pinterest page for this topic too. Don't forget to follow Darcy and Leandra's Pinterest boards if this topic pushes your buttons, you will see plenty more examples to whet your appetite there! I am really looking forward to seeing what you create over the next 2 weeks! ~ Leandra An InLinkz Link-up To join our challenge and win a £50 PaperArtsy voucher: Simply make something arty relevant to the topic, and link your creation from any social URL (eg. Ciao a tutti! Hi all and welcome to another week on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Thank you for joining us for the Spooky Challenge and we hope you will all join us again this week too. This week we would like you to do a little: ART JOURNALING It is Jo’s last week with us in the Designer Spotlight and we would like to say a huge thank you for all of your creations over the past month. It has been a real pleasure to have you along with us! I officially closed the Halloween season and begin with Christmas! With all sincerity, I am not particularly skilled in the art of Art Journaling and so I decided to interpret the challenge inspired by those wonderful Journal Travel that you see on Pinterest. I made a Journal that will be filled with photos, cards, memorabilia. I made it with a Tim Holtz's Folio Small, a structure a little forgotten which is not often seen, but that gives enormous satisfaction once it's finished! It's a relatively fast project: it's about covering the Folio with themed patterned papers, and decorating the covers and the interiors adding pockets, tags and so on. Today I show you the cover, the inside is still to be finished! The star of this project is certainly the new Tim Holtz's Jolly St. Nicks. As soon as I saw it I fell in love: it's spectacular. It is very easy to build, I was not able to take pictures because this week I worked at impossible hours with artificial light and the photos are very bad, but for next Santa (which I already have in mind!) I will try to show you how to assemble the pieces! I chose Tim Holtz's various cards, some are from some time ago, but you know that I am a collector! I'm about to hit it big, something I've been looking for a long time but now it's impossible to find! you'll see on FB! I added various embellishments from Ephemera packs and you're done! I leave you the details! For the older paper pads you can consult Tim Holtz's Blog which has all the links to sneak peeks from the various years of Idea-ology in the archive These are the links: Red stripes Merriment Collection, Black background. And this is really a rarity .... I haven't even found it on Tim's Blog .... it's 2010 ... but I still have it ... I'd like to find another package! From this 30 x 30 pad I cut the Christmas tree I put in the back of the Folio! You know that in my work can not miss a touch by Stampers Anonymous. In this project I used the new mini stencil with stars and a stamp with notes that I love so much! Ora tocca a voi! Even if I haven't been posting like crazy, I've been making like mad. I've hit one of those periods where one inspiration leads to another, and so on, until I can't possibly keep up with all the ideas in my head! There are about three hundred things on the go in my studio, but I wanted to make sure to share something before you forgot about me. So, I finished up this specimen Altoid tin to show off today. The outside paper is from Communique. The inside is lined with vintage music paper. The butterflies are fussy cut from Butterfly Specifics - Old Curiosity Shoppe. All those little specimen labels are from THIS new collage sheet set. I'm including two pages in this set. One page is filled with blank labels and the other filled with descriptions (low key fairy themed). While there aren't editable text areas, if you have basic photoshop/photo editing skills you should be able to add text on top of the image file, adding your own descriptions. For authenticity, I recommend viewing THIS tutorial to create an aged glass look. A little bit of fake grime makes a big difference! Inside those jars are all sorts of wee things. Twigs, roots, petals, bones, glitter, moss... basically anything that fit inside those little vials. All the bits used: Artifact Labels - 2 PDF collage sheet download Mint tin Mini vials Communique (exterior paper) Old Curiosity Shoppe (paper butterflies) Music paper Wee bits to fill the vials Metal card/Label holder Glue/Paint
Here we are again...in the *Industrial* Guest room! I'm slowly getting each little corner of the room completed with a wealth of treasured *things*! Awhile back I found these Tim Holtz boxes (yeah, I love his stuff) at Michael's and knew they would be perfectly perfect to hold all the *littles* that I've gathered over the years. It's a lot to look at....but, confined all in one place, it works. I found this old rusty light fixture and never knew what to do with it....after I got the boxes nailed to the wall, it looked unfinished...so, I rummaged around and there it was waiting for me. PERFECT! Then added the chain to give the illusion that the boxes are hanging. Thanks for stopping by.... Have a happy weekend..... xoso Sandy
