We are really getting down to the wire on the writing challenge. I still have a few days to post, and less days to write. Today is technically day 29 of the challenge, so I am not going to only write about one topic. You see, today's topic is asking me to write about my 21st birthday. That won't fill up an entire blog post, so I will be adding a few extra days in here as well. However, since we are running short on time in the day, and in the challenge, let's get this ball rolling. The entry for day 21 asks me to mention my zodiac/horoscope sign and if I believe it fits me. I don't follow the zodiac any more, and have never paid attention to my horoscope. However, I do know what my sign is, which is Scorpio. I know it is considered a water sign and that Scorpios tend to be blunt, see life in black and white, and love to travel. In addition they like to gather information and will dig to get to the root of an issue or to seek a resolution. Most of these things I think are just inherent in my personality, but have nothing to do necessarily with the zodiac signs, the placement of the sun or the planets, or the water. I know some people who were born around the same time as me, in terms of the months, may be the same year, generation, or maybe not, but not all of them have the same personality traits as I do. I believe it happens to be that we are how we are raised, and are products of the society in which we live. Everyone has certain things they do that are part of who they are. They don't have to change to become what their horoscope or zodiac says they are or should be. The best thing to do is not even both with that stuff & just be yourself. Day 23 asks me to talk about a family member that I dislike, but I think that I am going to forgo that one. I really don't believe this is a good forum for that type of discussion.... moving on! Day 24 asks me about something I miss. I can honestly say that I miss Idaho and the Northwest area. I grew up in the small town of Post Falls, Idaho. Lived there from the time I was about two and a half years old until I was fifteen years old. During that time we also lived in Lake Stevens, Washington for a short time and I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest/Seattle area. My parents moved our family back to California in 1983. I was both excited and sad. I was leaving the Northwest which has been the only home I had ever known and moving to a place that felt deep down in my roots like it was the place I wanted to be. I've been in Bakersfield, California now for ninety percent of the last 30 years, and the desire to move back to the Pacific Northwest is strong. My youngest son is tired of the California heat, and is ready to move. We went to Seattle, Wa. last year for his birthday and Christmas. It rained almost the entire trip up and back. He was in heaven. We're planning to move to the Seattle area after he graduates from high school. I asked him if he wants to move to Idaho to be closer to his grandma, m mom. He said 'No snow'. So, very succinctly, he told me no. My youngest son, as opposed to my older two, is a man of few words. Day 26 asks me what things I would say to my ex. Well, I have two. The long and the short of it would be this: "Thank you for my kids, and I'm sorry that I wasn't healthy enough to work on our relationships. I hope that one day you can find peace." Not much more to say. There has been a lot of healing, a lot of tears and a lot of broken items have been thrown out. Day 27 asks "write about what you wore today." I changed out of my Daisy Duck and Minnie Mouse pajamas this morning into one of my favorite shirts. It is a navy blue tunic style top with tiny cap sleeves. It has a kerchief style hem that goes past my bum and that's really important when wearing the black capri style pants that I generally wear with it, and am doing today. Sometimes, especially in the colder months, I will wear leggings with it, but again, so thankful that the top covers my bum. The only down side to this top is that it is see through. You heard me. It's see through. I found out by accident the very first time I wore it to work. One of my coworkers, kept looking away from me as we talked. I didn't think anything of it at first, because she's a bit odd, anyway. I went to the ladies room later and found out why she had been looking away. You could see my beautiful black bra through the shirt. So, needless to say, from that point on I wear camisoles under it. Not that it bothers me, mind you, but I know some people don't like it when you show off your underclothes. Especially at your work place. To complement this, I am wearing my go to flip flops today. They are also blue, but have white flowers on them. On to day 29, and to be honest, I really can't say much about my 21st birthday. No, I wasn't drunk, stoned or anything else. I honestly have little recollection. I know that a few of my girlfriends and I went to the beach for the weekend. We went out to dinner, and I was serenaded by the band that was playing at the bar that night, then we went back to our room and went to bed. I was not a party animal. I just remember that it was one of the few times in my life up to that point that someone had thought about me and had done everything they could to make my weekend special. We have a few more days to cover, and I will address them all in the next entry. Thanks for hanging out with me!! The challenge is almost complete! Then we'll be back to our regular posts!

This next one is an entry that I have had a hard time narrowing it down to just one thing. So instead, I'm going with two. I started to make it part of one of the multi day updates, but I think this has a life of it's own. In fact, I know that it does. The challenge for day 17 is to tell about a quote I try to live by. Let's start with the first one which is "Never water yourself down just because someone can't handle you at 100 proof." This one hit me like a bullet to the heart the first time I read it. I was thirty seven at the time and was in the midst of going through counseling for battered and abused women. I don't remember who, what, where or how, I just remember that quote. I realized that I had lived my entire life watered down. I was severely codependent, suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and was a recovering victim of abuse. Fifteen weeks into the counseling, I not only determined that I would no longer live my life watered down, I was going to admit to myself the full extent of the PTSD and abuses, and live my life as a conqueror. A warrior. I have never looked back. For many years I was stuck in the mindset that I was only as good as I was ever going to get and I would never be worth anything. I was broken, and didn't even know for sure how I'd become broken. I can tell you that I was verbally abused, and sexually as well. I can tell you that the bulk of my issues with PTSD stem from those abuses. Sadly, I can also say that my sons suffer to some extent because of how I did not deal with my PTSD while they were growing up. Their formative years were spent living under the umbrella of my brokenness. Truth be told, I was a great mom, for the few coping skills that I had that were healthy. I made sure to always tell my boys how much I loved them and to show them as often as I could. Sadly, those times were offset by the shouting matches that I got into with my boys. I made certain that they were fed and clothed even when I didn't eat or buy new clothes for myself. They always had everything they needed. We didn't take many vacations or day trips to the beach, because funds were almost non-existent most of their formative years. We did the best we could. When my dad was alive, he always made certain they had a kiddie pool of one form or another because living in Bakersfield, Ca. you must have some form of water therapy. When my mom lived close by and even when we lived with her, she also made certain that the few vacations we took together with the boys were full of great times. So though they may have been few and far between, they were there. I now live my life at 100 proof, however. I want to show my boys, even though my two oldest are now grown adults, that it's never to late to live your life with your full personality in tact and that you don't have to make excuses for anything or any part of who you are. My youngest son is learning to live this with me. He is on the Autism Spectrum, so it's not always easy for him to do, but he is learning. He doesn't take no for an answer, even from me sometimes, when he knows that what he wants should be able to be had. Sometimes I think he's living at 1000 proof and I'm just along for the ride. We've come a long way but the ride is far from over. "Never be defined by your past. It was just a lesson, not a life sentence." This quote fits so well into sync with the first one that I can't help but live it. In order to live my life fully now, I look at the past, and remember what was. I do not dwell on the past, nor do I live my life as if it will occur again. It is not a never ending cycle. I ended the merry-go-round of my life many years ago. Now, I may hit a roller-coaster once in while, but I don't live on the merry-go-round. There will always be times that we need to look back, to remember what happened. However it is even more important to remember that all things in our past are meant for us to learn from, but the road we walk only goes one direction- forward.

If you had the chance to live anywhere in the world, would you stay where you? Would you live in a bigger, or possibly smaller, house? Would you move to another country? These are all things that I have considered. Let's face it, we only have one life to live and who wants to live life in a rut? I say this, to get started with day five of the Writing Challenge, which asks me where would I like to live but have never visited. That opens up a great big can of worms. There are a lot of places I would like to visit, and many I would love to live. Ireland, Scotland and the UK, Australia, The Netherlands, Denmark, China, Japan, India just to name a few. I have always wanted to travel extensively, but raising boys on a single mom budget didn't always leave room for much travel. Of course, there's always been one place that I would love to live even though I've never visited, and that's Ireland. My ancestry is of Celtic descent, and I'm one quarter Dutch. If the people who reviewed my DNA sample are correct, there's some viking blood in my background somewhere, too. The rest is a jumble of Irish, Scottish, English, Welsh, and Cherokee Indian. I'm a lovely mess, and proud of it. I've always been fascinated by the Island. Some would say that it is not a fascination, but that the Island is calling me home to her. Her people, her culture, her beauty, they amaze me. I remember as a girl wishing that I could learn to speak Gaeilge, or Irish Gaelic. I love the sound of it. I have watched documentaries on many things Irish. The beauty of the thousand different shades of green while breathtaking in photos, I'm should would be so much more awe inspiring in person. Her amazing castles and rich history. The folklore was a staple of my formative years. I can't get enough of her. I've made friends who live in Ireland through my social media connections. They are funny and we have mutual friends in the US that have allowed us all to create an amazing network of craziness. Music, food, drink, shenanigans and craic. We share many things, and I am the better for it. And yes, if I was given the chance to move to Ireland, to become immersed in it's culture and people, I would move in a heartbeat.
