Walter Zinn, January 1956, observing technicians placing graphite from the Chicago Pile 1 (CP-1) reactor into storage in Building 24 of the current Argonne campus outside of Lemont, Illinois. Chicago Pile 1 was the world's first nuclear reactor, built in 1942 by Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi. The reactor was built underneath the University of Chicago's Stagg Field football stadium. On Dec. 2, 1942, Enrico Fermi and 48 of his colleagues, including Walter Zinn, succeeded in achieving in this reactor the world’s first man-made controlled nuclear chain reaction, thereby establishing the ability of mankind to control the release of nuclear energy. Fermi, Zinn, and other scientists from that group later founded Argonne National Laboratory, with Zinn becoming Argonne's first director. In early 1943, the Manhattan Engineer District disassembled Chicago Pile 1 and rebuilt it at Palos Park, IL, as Chicago Pile 2 (CP-2), where it resumed operation on March 20, 1943 as a research reactor. In the mid-1950's Argonne returned the Palos Park site to the Cook County Forest Preserve and shut down CP-2. The fuel and graphite from CP-2 were salvaged and moved to Argonne's present location [reference: Argonne National Laboratory 1946-1996, Jack M. Holl 1997]. CP-1 consisted of 45000 graphite bricks stacked in 57 layers, with disks of uranium metal and uranium oxide placed in holes machined into the graphite, as seen in the photograph.
