Demolition was well advanced at London's Broad Street station in September 1985, to be replaced by the Broadgate development. The station was still open here, just; a peak-hour service to Watford Junction was still running from a temporary platform at the northern end of the station. Full closure came in May 1986. It's Festival time in Edinburgh, and visitors by the tens of thousand are admiring the Scottish capital and its classical architecture, its broad streets in the New Town and the quaint ginnels and closes off the High Street. And these are all very fine and I recommend them. In my day, and I'm sure now, as well, there are area of the city which are less frequented by the non-indigenous; perhaps their charm is less but they are intersting none the less, perhaps more so. Decay in the emulsion over the years since I took this picture, has allowed the white of the front dome to bleed into the dark shades of the building behind. Edinburgh 587 has the old Corporation crest on the front, but that on the flank is of the then-new Lothian Region Council. I moust say that I don't know where I took this picture; I'd be greatful for any hep in identifying the site. The grimy building has very tall windows, so I don't think it's a domestic structure. Perhaps a warehouse of some sort?

Infographics aren't just decorated data. As Kerry Butters shows, when well-executed they can change hearts, minds and even entire governments.
From an excellent history of the building: Following the interests of his client, Neatby created an Art Nouveau front which told the story of printing. At the top, between charming turrets, a massive figure holds a lamp and mirror to symbolise light and truth. Below a mock-battlement, the story-telling breaks out in force. On either side Johann Gutenberg, father of printing, and William Morris, reviver of craftsmanship, stand each with their characteristic typeface. In between them the Spirit of Light spreads glorious wings over arched windows. Below is Everard's name in the Art Nouveau typeface he designed, above wrought iron gates which incorporate his initials.
