So many of the social life's aspects have changed for women in the years. Starting with the right for education and ending with gender equality - all of this didn't happen overnight, and many badass women had to sacrifice their personal lives for a greater cause. Women's Equality Day celebrated on August 26th in the US, commemorates the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, granting women the right to vote. It was certified in 1920, despite being introduced many years earlier in 1878, and since 1972, every president has published a proclamation for Women's Equality Day. Only because of the strong women in history we have reached this point in our society.

For the last few months, Australia has been tormented by natural disasters caused by extreme weather, from destructive fires worsened by drought, to flash flooding that occurred when that drought suddenly ended. You can see photos of the damage that the bushfires have already done to wildlife and communities here and here. While the southern states of Victoria and New South Wales aren’t out of the woods yet and many fires are still raging, photos show that life goes on in the areas that the fire already passed through.

17 FEBRUARY 2009 was Enami's 150th BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY !!! FULL 3-D VERSION of the above image may be seen here : ♥ www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/2822252615/ Here's another image of T. Enami seated during the same photo session : ♥ flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/3137799906/in/datetaken/ Step outside on the street, and his studio looks like THIS : ♥ www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/2413137039/ If you somehow missed the connection, you will notice that I am also using a crop of this ca.1895-98 image as my flickr "head shot" buddy icon/avatar. Unfortunately, for all of you ladies who might have taken a liking to this handsome Japanese photographer I use in the little picture beside my flickr handle, the real Okinawa_Soba is actually named Rob, and is a crotchety old Anglo-Saxon born in the USA. In fact, he's the old geezer seen in this photo, using a stereo-camera while poking around Tokyo, Japan, and terrorizing small children : www.t-enami.org/about_us Again, my sincere apologies for breaking your heart. Now, back to business... Seeing that there are already over 600 images linked to ENAMI's name here on flickr, I thought you'd like to see a photo of the man himself. This half-stereoview image of T. ENAMI (1859-1929) was photographed in his Yokohama studio when he was in his mid-to-late 30s. He was married twice (his first wife died of illness), and had several children. Either his 2nd wife or a studio assistant tripped the shutter for him after he had dressed in this old suit of armor --- striking a warrior's pose for posterity. Obviously, the 3-D version is much cooler to look at --- Enami appears full and "real" as he stands there in front of you. www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/2822252615/ By the way, Enami was NOT a Samurai, and according to his descendants there is no evidence that he was descended from Samurai stock. Further,in spite of any marriages the real Samurai might have contracted for social or reproductive purposes (even while holding their noses at it), they all lived a homosexual lifestyle, and took young male lovers who themselves grew to be Samurai. The Samurai had actually been disbanded by law, and Enami was just posing to show off the armor, because tourists LOVED buying photos like this. At the time this photo was taken, Enami was active in all types of photographic pursuits, leaving us today with one of the largest and most well-rounded published archives of any photographer during the last half of the Meiji era and beyond -- including all sizes of classic ALBUMEN PRINTS, STEREOVIEWS, and LANTERN SLIDES -- together numbering in the several 1000s of titles. Born during the Edo-Bakumatsu period, Enami was a contemporary of the well-known photographers of the day, and throughout his life worked closely with TAMAMURA, and K. OGAWA. It was the already-famous Ogawa that had taught the art of photography to Enami when they were both still both in their 20s. Even before his studio suffered its first destruction during the Great Earthquake of 1923, Enami had already become a member of that elite alumni of photographers whose photographs had appeared on the pages of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE. Ultimately, Enami's images would appear in at least four issues. His real name was NOBUKUNI ENAMI (江南 信國), but for the world of photography, he used the trade name T. ENAMI. The "T" is thought to have stood for "TOSHI". Upon his death at age 70, he left the studio to his first son TAMOTSU, who sold his father's photographs -- mostly as lantern-slides -- until 1945. The talented and prolific T. ENAMI is survived today by two great-grandsons who live in Yokohama, whose lives are totally unrelated to the world of photography. In this list we see a combination of two of my favorite things - ancient (well mostly) history and warriors. While most of these warrior groups come from ancient history - one or two come close to modern history. They all, undoubtedly, belong on this list. Please mention other groups who might be considered for a future list in the comments.
