There are several programs and practices out there to address fluency. Most involve some types of strategies or fluency enhancing behaviors (FEBs) to teach those who stutter how to manage their fluency. I use these strategies daily with my fluency kiddos and have found them to work very well. I try to spend time practicing […]
Welcome to My Speech & Language Spot! Come on in and share your ideas!
Today is Monday and I’m not at work! I’m sitting on my couch and enjoying a nice cup of tea on this muggy October day. It’s fall break down here, so we get a couple of days to recoup and rest and gear up for the crazy school days ahead. Fortunately for me, this means […]
Our district uses the Unique Learning System (along with modifying and adapting the regular curriculum. We also use News 2 You. What is News 2 You, you ask? It is a Special Education Online Weekly Newsletter! We LOVE News 2 You. There are So many things that you can do with the paper. There are different levels (just like in Unique). There are different worksheets. There are different words. There are different assessments. In other words, it is a fabulous way for my students to get information from a newspaper geared towards my classroom. This all sounds fantastic, but can you say OVERLOAD! Just like every other year I change things up a bit. This year, I really like how I have my News 2 You. I pull my students over to the calendar area in the afternoon. Remember, I have many different levels of learning, so I really have to make sure that I use my time wisely and get to all of my learners. Couple of quick things before I go into more pictures. Every year I go shopping for school supplies. I found these really cool clear sleeves that are heavy duty. I bought them and then spent a good 3 months trying to figure out how I wanted to use them. I Finally figured out that I wanted to use them for my News 2 You area. It is great to put the worksheet inside and then add tape to make the area interactive and easy to change for the next day. The activities on this board we do every day for a week. On Friday's I then give my students the activity to do by themselves so I can assess. Vocabulary Words Every week there are new vocabulary words that go with the theme of the paper. I print these off and on Friday's we add them to our word work books (students) and our word wall (class) Some ideas -we alphabetize these -we find the beginning letters -we point to certain pictures -we read them Webbing Activity I LOVE this activity! I have even made a larger one in my classroom for when we read books (can you say getting my kiddos ready with anchor charts and STAAR-alt and being just like every other regular ed class!) As we read our news we fill in the blanks. Cut and Paste Sentences This one is another great activity for putting sentences in order. The News Because News 2 You is in a PDF format to download I print them on half sheets. I make sure there are enough different levels of books for each of my students to be successful. We read these as a group at the first of the week, and then I listen to my readers throughout the rest of the week. For my non-verbal students to participate I have them point out pictures as we go along and supply words as able. Other Great Things about News 2 You -my students LOVE The Knock Knock jokes! What a great way to teach taking turns and humor! -on Thursday's we do the science experiment that goes with the News (yes, there is a science experiment too!) -on Friday's we cook (we even have a special helper that comes in on Friday's to help us do that) -on Friday's we also put the weekly News 2 You in book boxes. Students can then color them, fill them out, and read them on their own time. There are a TON of different things you can do with News 2 You! These are just a few of my ideas that I have used for my students to be successful. One Last Note I completed my first project for sewing! I had been talking about making myself an apron all year. I had an amazing parent make me a BEAUTIFUL apron a couple of years ago, but I have retired it to my house. I really wanted a half apron. Not only did I want a half apron, I wanted one with a clear pocket on the front so it could hold my badge. I am constantly leaning over to help my kiddos, and my badge always gets in the way. So, I did it! I followed the pattern, and added a couple of touches of my own. It has 2 pockets, one clear pocket, and a pen holder. I am pretty proud.
In today’s FAQ Friday post, I’m hoping to give you a couple of easy ideas and a few research links that could help my fellow SLP and teacher friends. It’s that time of year! Summertime is just around the corner. State testing is over. It didn’t help that there was a full moon last night. […]
I did a mini-lesson on monitoring and clarifying this week. I was pleasantly surprised when with the strategies my students gave for our anchor chart. Check it out! One of the other resources I use for this is Explode the Code. It especially helps students who make visual errors when attempting to read words because it makes them look at the whole word and each of the sounds in the word. It's more of a phonics-based program, but it also has comprehension as you get into higher levels. I really like how it helps with syllabication, and thus, fluency! Here are some sample pages provided by School Specialty. Please note the copyright! View by clicking on ONE of the images - they all link the same pdf.

Hey y'all! My kiddos were learning ALL about pronouns for the last 3 weeks - regular pronouns and possessive pronouns alike. But, I wanted to make sure they understood pronouns in general. So, we made "Pronoun Flowers." Kelley from Teacher Idea Factory originally came up with the idea of Pronoun Patch flowers, but I created my own template to go ahead and get copies of each of the parts - the center, the petals, the leaves, and the stems. We called ours Pronoun Flowers and decorated our portion of the hallway with them. They turned out SO fantastic. The kiddos truly did learn a lot, too, and began to understand pronouns like pros. I had a few that struggled but once we reviewed the ideas behinds pronouns and why we use them, along with HOW we use them, they caught right on. I attribute the success of this mini-project to their success on their grammar test over pronouns! Our display in the hallway. The pronoun "them" - this kiddo got it! They struggled with the pronoun "it," but once we gave examples, they understood it! Another "it" example! I know we had the pronoun "them" up above, but my kiddos truly did struggle with "them." They wanted to include themselves, but little did they realize that it would make it "WE" or "US." Finally, they got it! Both students using them were able to provide great examples. Finally, they loved the he/she/him/her pronouns the best. It was easiest for them and they were able to get these down quickly. Overall, the activity was a success! I truly enjoyed it and I loved how bright and fun our hallway looked - we got lots of compliments on such a cute activity, so I thank Kelley for the FANTASTIC idea!! Anything specific you use to teach pronouns?
At the beginning of every school year, I like to take mass baselines for all of my students so that I have a good clean idea on where they are toward meeting the goals set for them on their IEPs. Maybe they had a summer miracle or maybe they’ve regressed a little. Today I’m going […]

Get students thinking, writing, and analyzing as part of their regular math routine with these error analysis templates. Common Core Math Practice #3 says that students can “construct viable arguments and critique the thinking of others”. These templates are a practical way to bring this thinking into your classroom. Implementation suggestions: *Specifically teach each type of error that you want students to identify (I use careless, computational, & conceptual types) *Create questions as part of a rotation or station *Have students create questions and trade *implement as homework/ classwork / or bell-work

I wanted a spring-inspired activity so my students could practice fact families. I am sooo tired of the snow, slush, and coldness of winter. We made these kites today and colored them with all different colors. The kite tails were made from construction paper that kind of looks like it was tie-dyed. I hung them in the hall and wow did the colors brighten my day! Fact Family Kite Fact Family Kite Bows
I just wanted to share one of my favorite poems with you all. This poem essentially sums up the job of a teacher. This poem also shows me why I want to become a teacher. I hope that a teacher has inspired you all to become what you want to be, and if not, at least one has touched your life in some way or another. I found this via the Internet at BusyTeacher.org. What are your thoughts on this poem? Do they make you reflect, if you are a teacher? Do they make you want to become a teacher? Let me know! Have a good night, y'all!
Have any of you read the book Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto? It’s such a cute book to read with your kiddos. I usually communicatively read through it with my 2nd – 5th graders to work on those higher level language targets. Here’s why I <3 this book: It’s great to show how another culture celebrates […]

Remember the game Don't Break the Ice from when you were little? Well, it's still around. I'll bet many of you even have one in your therapy closet. I was at Walmart the other day and found one on sale for $4.88, so naturally I snagged it! It just needed a little something extra to make it work for me. Sooo I created this packet to accompany Don't Break the Ice. This way you can play it articulation style! Here's a little how-to for one of your very own. The first thing to do is print out all of the squares onto card stock. I'd laminate them too for durability (especially since they are going to be banged on!). Then, cut them out. I made them smaller than the actual ice cubes so they should fit fine. Adjust by cutting them down if you need to. Next, stick velcro to the tops of the ice cubes. I used velcro stickers. You can get these at Walmart or any craft store. Stick the other side of the velcro to the backs of the squares. Assemble the game as directed. I put the cubes in before I attach the velcro together. See below. After you squeeze them all in there, attach whatever sound squares you need to target. Each sound is a different color, so you can mix and match what you need. I used all /r/ sounds for this one. There are several ways you can play this game. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Play the game as directed. For each fallen ice cube, the student must say the word (you can have them say it 5 times, in a sentence, using their fluency strategy, etc.). 2. The student has to say the word each time they tap the ice cube. 3. Students can say "I went sledding and brought a..." and list the items on the ice cubes as they collect them. 4. Let them make up silly stories or sentences with the words they collect. This packet comes with ice cube toppers for the following sounds: /r, s, z, l, k, g, f, v, sh, ch, th, dz, r-blends, s-blends, l-blends/. You can grab it at my TPT store here! What do you think? Do any of you have Don't Break the Ice??
I forget where I heard it, but someone once told me that any book or story can be summarized with the following phrase: (Somebody) wanted __________, but __________ so ____________; then ___________. Let's try it: Cinderella wanted to go to the ball, but she didn't have a dress so her fairy godmother made her a dress and then she went to the ball. (Click for a rebus story) Little Red Hen wanted to get help making bread, but dog, cat, and duck didn't want to help, so she made it alone then she ate it all herself. So the grammar fanatic in me says these are run-on sentences, but it makes summarizing very easy for younger children! Here's our anchor chart: Download my graphic organizer or check these out: Fortune Teller foldable Roller Coaster Beginning, Middle, End form
This graphic organizer was used in my grade two class, for an Ethics and Religious Culture project on inventions. After learning about famous inventors and how their inventions impacted society, the students had to come up with their own inventions. The students were given this sheet as a tool for brainstorming. The layout includes: - The name of the invention (students were asked to be creative). - A section for sketching the invention - A written section describing the purpose of the invention - A written section describing how the invention will help others - A written section describing how the invention works

8 Tips to Help Support a Kinesthetic Classroom? Don't be mistaken! This is not a 'flexible seating' post. Flexible seating is part of the puzzle piece, but
How has your summer vacation been going? Mine has been both relaxing and busy at the same time. I have been working like a busy bee planning for my mid-August nuptials! If you follow me on Instagram, then you’re definitely up to date on all things wedding! I’ve also been making more of an effort...
Defiance. Anger. Fits. Aggression. Do you ever feel like it’s hard to know what to do when kids are acting out? Do you ignore them? Bribe them? Argue with them? One thing we definitely don’t want to do is give up on them. Obviously, there are many many different specific reasons and situations kids demonstrate challenging […]
Hi y'all! Linking up with Tara @ 4th Grade Frolics for her Monday Made It linky! This week, I was inspired by a pin I have seen floating around Pinterest. Source: Technology Rocks. Seriously. So I chose to create my own variation of this sign, but not on paper. MATERIALS: 12x18 wooden board (mine is from Michaels) Black acrylic paint White cardstock Cricut (or any cutting machine) 5 colors of scrapbook paper Mod Podge or Xyron sticker maker I actually turned the "Before you speak" into stickers with my Xyron sticker maker, but then I chose to do the rest in Mod Podge. I've never actually used Mod Podge for a full out project before, so it was a different kind of experience! In the end, it was a super easy project and I plan to put it up by my desk in my classroom. I can see little imperfections throughout the board, BUT I think it gives it character because it's not perfect :) It's also time to start our Live Laugh Craft series party with my BPIC, Monique @ Uniquely Monique! She's hosting this great linky and I know it'll keep me in shape with my crafting! This time around, it's a planner creation party! Of course, you can go out and purchase your own planners and make it quick, but is it personable? Not always! So, I decided to create my own planner (and some of you have seen it floating around on my TPT store!) but to add more pages to it to fit my current needs. So, below is a description of my planner and some pictures of it! :) I chose to make my cover with something beachy because I'm a beach baby. Always have been, always will be! Next are my pages. I left them blank from numbers so that I could reuse this design year after year if I so choose! This is a similar format for all months, I just wanted to show you August! There's really not much going on because school doesn't start for me until September 4th! Here's a daily view of what's going on for the last week of August! Im going to North Carolina to see babe and I CANNOT wait!! Finally, I've got two different pages - one is a to do list page and one is a notes page. I'll print out a to-do list and a notes page for each month and use them as necessary. As you can see, I've got a few things on my to-do list... I should probably get on it!! So, that's my mini planner made to my own personality! I love the color coral, so that's the reasoning for the outline. You can make your planner the way you want... but go check out Moe & her co-host's planner ideas by clicking on the picture above!! :) Next week, they've decided that we are making our own DIY headbands - perfect for fall & Pinterest utilization! QUESTION: I have 150 craft sticks sitting in my other room. I want to do something with them, but I honestly have NO idea what to do! Any ideas or thoughts? They will be greatly appreciated! Have a good day, y'all!
This poster is a perfect visual to use as a resource when teaching your students about beginning coding vocabulary and skills! Thank you for your purchase and enjoy :)

We all love things that are creepy and crawly. I know the kiddos do!!! I am going to post my Insects & Bugs Centers. Please be aware that there may be some pictures that are not for your viewing eyes. Just skip past them and see what else we like do in our classroom. HE HE HE One student in the center would pick a word and say it. Two other students would try to see who could be the first one to slap the bug with the word on it. The students completed the sentence, My butterfly sees... The students will drop the bugs onto the jar. Then they will add the 2 numbers together or subtract the bigger number from the smaller number. I will have my recording sheet on my teacher website. www.luv2teachk.shutterfly.com The students will turn over a bug of each kind and write the word for the picture shown by sounding it out on his/her sheet. YES....he is painting with a real worm. I was not sure about this idea, but the kiddos LOVED it! We made sure to wash the worms carefully each time. Then we after the week was finished we let the worms go outside. After the students worm painting was dry, they traced and cut out a worm. Then added a googly eye. Too cute! Amber
