As you know, I love beading around in circles, I love brick stitch, and I have a huge stash of my Gram's buttons. So..... I am finding that I like 4 holes better than two and that a simple pattern is better than a more complex one. Most of these are headed to Lyn Carey's shop Earth and Wears ~ where Handmade Lovelies peek out of every little nook and cranny! If you are ever in the area, do go there ~ you will be oh so glad you did! I made a few of these in November to see if they would sell at Earth and Wears and they did! Yay! So I figured I better make some more :-)

hey loves :) Today I have a tutorial to make your own bracelets with nothing but buttons and string. Miss last week's button tutorial? Click Here :) You will need: - buttons (25ish) - embroidery floss - scissors - tape (optional) Step 1: First you need your string. When it comes to measurement, here's what I always go by: Three times the length around around your wrist, multiplied by two. You WILL have string to trim at the end, but it's worth it to make sure you're able to tie off the end. Fold it in half and then tie a knot at the fold (like the picture above) Step 2: Lay out your buttons, this will give you a projection of what your bracelet will look like when it's on the string. Step 3: For the first button, thread through the front. Cross the strings over behind (if it's a 4 hole button) and thread back through to the front. Step 4: For the second button, thread from behind. Step 5: Repeat the pattern, front thread, back thread, front thread, back thread, and so on. It'll create a nice layered effect. Continue until you you ALL BUT ONE of your buttons. Step 6: When you have only one button left, tie a knot at the end of the string. Then tie another about half an inch away. Thread the last button however you want, and then tie another knot. This is the button that will be attaching the bracelet together with the loop at the top. Cut the remaining string and you're done :) Mix it up with different buttons and different colors. See you next time loves!
It has been quiet on the blog, except for the ATTS 7 sign ups and giveaway winners of Therese's Gorgeous Cabs! I have been beading the winter away. Truly. 15 hour days when I can get the time. Because I am not going OUT THERE! Too cold, too much ice, too much snow. I prefer to sip coffee or whiskey and bead during the winter. So, while I have beaded every moment I have free, I cannot show you any of it yet. How miserable is this winter? I have made my pieces for 7 out of 9 challenges I am participating in between the end of March and the end of November. The only thing good about winter is it helps me meet beading deadlines. There have been many pieces that I think are done but then go to the chop. It tears me up when I have to send a piece I worked hard on to the chop, but often, it is for the best. Here are a few more buttons I worked on yesterday because I needed an easier project for a while. These I can show you. I made a button bracelet that sold and I forgot to photograph it. It was really cool! I think I am going to make a couple more of them. If I do, they will be some of the few non-challenge pieces I can show. I am hoping to get the remaining two challenge pieces done before the snow melts...which could be June at this rate. Bead on my friends, Bead On. I think I like the tiny ones the best out of this batch.

One day during the pandemic, I was poking around online and came across pictures of a German/Eastern European craft called "zwirnknopf" - weaving handmade buttons from colored thread. Now I can't stop making them! To me, each one is its own little mandala, perfect for adding flair and focus to knitted, crocheted or sewn garments. I hand-make each of my buttons using DMC perle cotton, small plastic rings and an embroidery needle. Also magnifiers and bright light! These puppies are small! The thread is very firmly and tightly woven together, ensuring there will be no slippage or unraveling. I make short, tightly braided loops on the back for attaching to garments. The few knots there are are also secured with fraycheck. This set of buttons measure one-inch in diameter. If you need more than show in this listing, message me. Or, if you need this colorway in another size of button, I can do that, too. Available sizes are 3/4-inch, 1-inch and 1-1/8 inches in diameter.

Good Morning All!!! With last week being Christmas week, and my little dog being so sick, I decided to take a bit of a cyber break. Funny how that can be rather refreshing. I'm happy to report that Miss Little Bit is doing so much better. Just a week ago, I thought that we were coming to the end. But that night she slowly began to take a turn for the better. I feel that we've been given the gift of a little more time. As long as she is healthy and happy, we'll continue on. My sincere thanks to all of you who sent well wishes her way. If nothing more, it comforted my heart. When it comes to buttons, I think we are always on the hunt for the perfect button, and sadly, that perfect button can sometimes be rather elusive. A number of years ago, I was making a jacket that I really needed to finish that night in order to wear the next day. When it came to the buttons, nothing I had would work and it was far too late in the evening to go out and find buttons. I ended up cutting the straps off of a summer dress in order to have enough braided cord to make the knot buttons that I decided would work. You can find the post about it HERE. Below you see the jacket. The rattail cord was actually braided prior to the balls being made. Worked out so well. Below is a wonderful tutorial on making knot buttons. This is something to just try out with some leftover rattail cord when you are not desperate like I was. Many of us have vintage pieces of embroidery that either have stains, holes, or both. A lovely idea is to cut them apart and make buttons. Another nice idea would be to get large covered buttons and make pins for family members. Then everyone can have a little useful piece of history. An embroidered pin is always lovely on a sweater or summer dress. When it comes to making a button for a blouse of jacket, the buttons featured below are a wonderful idea. You can find the rings in the home dec department of your local fabric store. Add a little batting to the center to give the button a nice rounded top. The buttons pictured below are a little time consuming, but I think they would be so pretty made from buttonhole twist. As featured, they are perfect for your hand knitted items. You can find the tutorial HERE. I had not thought of making square buttons, but I came across this on Pinterest and loved the idea. Sadly, I wasn't able to find a link to the original post, but the pictures are quite clear, so I think you could easily duplicate the idea. If anyone does know of the original source, please let me know and I will add the link. The next 2 ideas are simply sweet. Neither would take much time and they would look lovely on a sweater or a child's dress. HERE'S a link to the crocheted buttons. No link to this one, but so easy to do. Just cut a piece of felt, sew on the button and add the simple embroidery stitches. I featured this button in a previous post, but I think it is well worth repeating as it would get you out of a button pinch with many garments. And even better, they are super easy to make. HERE'S a link to the detailed instructions. May you never be desperate at midnight, especially for a button!!!! Enjoy this last week of 2015! Rhonda
