My girlfriend came over to refill my estrogen reserves last week, and brought with her a fantastic craft for us to do together while chatting, laughing, gossiping and catching up after her long vacation. One third of the way through summer vacation with three boys, she knew just what I needed. She brought over a bunch of stuff for us to sit down and make our own button bracelets. So fun! The greatest part was that each of our bracelets turned out differently! Do you want to join us? Let's make some funky Button Bracelets! Materials: Buttons in various sizes (test to be sure your cord will fit into the holes) Round leather or coated cotton cord (1 mm in diameter) Instructions: Arrange your buttons ahead of time to lay out your pattern Begin with a length of cord about 18 inches long (you will adjust this to fit at the end, but cutting it too short will result in frustration and some swearing...trust me, I know). The more knots you intend to make the longer the cord. Fold your cord in half and tie a knot in the looped end, like this: Now, begin threading the cord through your button holes. Criss-cross your cord for the 4 hole buttons like this: The same is possible for the two holed buttons. Bring a cord up through each hole then back down the next hole like this: You might also want to thread your button onto one piece of cord then knot, like this: To finish off your bracelet, just pull the cord through the last button and tie in a square knot. See? You can pull the last button through the loop at the other end to attach to your wrist. Now, go crazy! Try to be random and mix it up, stack some, knot some, criss-cross some, there is no right or wrong way to do this! Get creative, girl! You might end up with something like this: Or simple shell and wood buttons look like this: Or you could go nuts and work in some beads like this: Now, gather some buttons, call up some girl friends, set the kids into the back yard to play, and have some fun! PS (JoAnn's has some bags of fantastic HUGE buttons with HUGE holes for the little ones to get in on the act. It will be a HUGE relief to use these buttons for them. A bloggy friend suggested dipping lengths of yarn in clear nail polish and twisting. Once dry, they will thread easily for the kiddos.)
Pin It A few weeks back we wrote a post about how to add one of the cool little “pin-it” buttons that encourage your blog readers to pin your images on Pinterest. It was a bit techy and probably more than most of you want to get into. Well Pinterest must have known that was… [read more]

pattern used - Night Out On The Cape by Lisa Gentry found in Hooked For 30 Days e-bookyarn used - recycled yarns... a chenille and a ribbon yarn worked together between the green contrasts in the ribbon yarn and the soft texture of the chenille, this project totally reminds me of nature... of moss growing on an old piece of timber hook used - 4.5mm bamboothoughts - I like the panels with the little hearts in them, but I really wasn't sure about the long sections of chain the longer the garment 'hangs' for, the more the chains droop... and I'm starting to like the result there is also a pattern for a shawl pin with this cape... I only worked one round of the pattern, and added a bead every second stitch the ring of the shawl pin? it's ONE of those wooden curtain rings, of course!
Hello my dear friends, today's post is only a tiny wee short one because I am very busy. I just wanted to share my latest little thing. You know my love of making pincushions ... well, pincushions need pins and because it's hard to find something nice at times I just made them myself now ... ...neat pins! This is the easiest thing to make ~ really! Find some some nice beads, vintage pearls or tiny trinkets and glue them to your pins and ready!! They will look so pretty on your pincushions or you could use them in other creations too. I am very busy working on all sorts of things for next weeks posts so don't forget to drop by and take a peak to find out what I have been up to. I hope you are all well and life is treating you kind. Have a peaceful and creative day, Karen B.
Hello my dear friends, these past days have truly been a roller coaster ride for me with everything going on at the moment. Our outdoor project is weeks behind now and no end in sight really. My mother is still in the hospital and so far we still do not know what is wrong with her. Her breathing is very bad, she forgets everything and she doesn't want to eat. It is really hard seeing her like this not knowing what the problem is. One moment she seems to be OK and clear thinking and the next she is talking about things that makes no sense at all. She was even found wandering the hallway at night all on her own and looking for Christmas ornaments I was told ~ it is so sad. I would like to take a moment to thank all of you sweet bloggers for your well wishes and prayers ~ you are so thoughtful and you are all in my heart. I do try to stay strong and not break down so this morning I got up very early after receiving a phone call from a relative in Germany and I used creative therapy to take my mind off things for a short time and this is what I created ... I used this old shaker top ... and a piece of my pale sage green velvet and... ... created this!! Yes ~ I know another pincushion but I really enjoyed making it ... ... and after I was done I actually feel a bit more peaceful to start the new day. I used some old piece of crochet doilies and an old earring to dress it up and I hope you like it! And last but not least .... ... these are some of my beautiful flowers that are blooming in my garden right now ~ such a lovely color! I hope you are all well, healthy and looking after yourselves. Have a peaceful and creative day, Karen B.

Amethyst Becky Brown Amethyst, a purple stone, reminds us of the purple, green and white color scheme that helped define the image of Britain's Women's Social and Political Union. The WSPU marching with banners and sashes WSPU colors became emblematic of the militant group known as the Suffragettes, who broke away from the more conservative Suffragist organizations in 1903. After 1908 tricolor sashes and rosettes identified marchers immediately as militant Suffragettes. The WSPU sponsored gift shops at their headquarters selling banners and "scarves in various shades of purple as well as white muslin summer blouses and [an]almost unending variety of bags, belts....books, games, blotters, playing cards and indeed almost everything that can be produced in purple, white and green." A selection of suffrage badges, medals and knick-knacks such as playing cards in the green, purple and white palette. There was a good deal of variety in all the shades from pinkish to dark blue violet. There is some recent discussion that the colors green, white and violet were chosen to echo the motto Give Women the Vote. That's a good way to recall the colors GWV---but the Suffragettes did not ask anyone to give them the vote. They demanded the vote. The WSPU's main mottoes were Votes for Women and Deeds Not Words Hand-made embroidered and appliqued banners were important in the British campaigns. This banner has the WSPU motto "Deeds Not Words" among the purple, green and white iris. The hammer and horseshoe stands for Hammersmith. Read more about banners from the Suffrage Atelier here at the VADS (Visual Arts Data Service) database: http://www.vads.ac.uk/collections/FSB.html See Lisa Tickner's book on the imagery of the English suffrage campaign, The Spectacle of Women by clicking here for a Google preview: http://books.google.com/books?id=qjp5Yw_w8XsC&printsec=frontcover&dq=lisa+tickner&source=bl&ots=rHULR1a11i&sig=c50VG2vtO_FIDtf2JvUYOH0CFCk&hl=en&sa=X&ei=v_5JUOKYIoXm8gSh0IGgAw&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=lisa%20tickner&f=false She notes that broadly speaking the colors symbolized purity (white), hope (green) and dignity (purple). The Amethyst quilt block, a name published by the Kansas City Star's quilt columnist in February 1931, can remember the WSPU's skillful use of color to communicate their presence and their goals. Becky is doing two quilts---each granddaughter will get one. A red amethyst from Georgann Cutting an 8" Finished Block B - Rotary Cut 1 square 3-3/8". Use templates for the others. And for 2020 I'm adding a 12" pattern. Here's an exploded block to show you one way to piece it together. You could also piece the star and then set in the A pieces. Either way you have Y seams. You can do it! Dustin's dots and woven stripes #2975a It's #2975a in BlockBase. Don't forget the "a" when you do a number search. I have been playing around at Spoonflower.com and have uploaded a fabric print especially for these blocks. I used images of the parasols that said Votes for Women. Here's a mockup of the Amethyst block from EQ with the magenta colorway. Below is a scaled picture of the print. I just got the fabric back. It's a little pinker than this photo. I did it in both purplish-pink and yellow, thinking 1930s prints. Click here to see my Material Culture Spoonflower Store. The two different color ways are called VotesForWomenGold and VotesForWomenPurple http://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/materialculture Do a search in the Spoonflower store for fabric with a suffrage theme and you'll find some other ideas. Sunday's Quilt Inspiration had to do with crazy quilts because I needed some ideas for the crazy quilt bolster I've been working on. Well, I'm still working on the bolster and need to see how lace was used on some of the Victorian quilts that I've seen. So I figured that I'd start with crazy lace. Then we'll just see what happens from there. All of these photos are on my "crazy, quilts" board. Notice the spider and spider web in the next piece? I had to find out why so many crazy quilts included them and, it turns out, there was a good reason: women of the Victorian era, both in Europe and in the States, believed that spiders were a sign of good luck. Additionally, because spiders "weave" their webs, they were good luck for weavers of cloth and those who used the cloth--needlewomen. Naturally, because many crazy quilts depicted the interests of the family, needlewomen include the spiders and their webs to represent their own work. Although I found several articles on this topic, two were especially interesting reads: http://www.caron-net.com/featurefiles/featmay.html and http://cqmagonline.com/vol09iss3/articles/1002/index.shtml. I recommend them if you're interested in learning more about crazy quilts in general. The second article is from Crazy Quilts Magazine Online, which has many articles available for free. Enjoy some more pins, these from my "vintage, joy" board. Happy Quilting, Mary

Hello my dear friends, I have had a lovely time creating something new yesterday after not having a single creative thought in almost weeks now and I feel great!! I felt so relaxed and peaceful which working with all sorts of little treasures ~ just what I needed after my not so good weekend. Don't get me wrong I did manage to do a lot of work in our back yard as well and I am happy that I didn't give up but being creative is the best and what is my most favourite item to create? ... Pincushions!! I haven't made any for such a long time and it was just the right "therapy" I needed ~ making those lovely little things and I must say I am very happy with the result of my work. If you didn't see my post yesterday, these are the little treasures I decided to work with ... ... and these are my finished creations! The first pincushion ... My daughter Ashleigh came up with the idea of making the pincushion this way. I am so happy she told me about it because I wanted to do it differently and I know it wouldn't have looked this beautiful. Thank you Sweetheart for your creative input! Less is more in this case for sure. The detail on the shaker top is so delicate and pretty ~ I just love it. This is just to show you the size of this pincushion. The second pincushion ... This is the little tattered jar lid. I used bits of old doilies and antique buttons to embellish this one ... ... and the pincushion itself is made from brown velvet. The third and last pincushion for today ... ... is made from old lace and stained muslin. Again old trinkets and a antique button give this piece it's charm. All the pincushions have been filled with bird gravel. I know that some crafters use crushed walnut shells but I only had this to hand and it's great for keeping your needles nice and sharp. Creating ~ the art to take something old and to give it a new life. This is how I created my blog name ~ Todolwen ~ old to new! I am really happy I could share my newest creations with all you lovely bloggers today and I hope that it won't be too long before I can write my next post again. I hope you are all well. Have a peaceful and creative day, Karen B.
