When a Bay Area family decided to move full-time to Tahoe, they wanted a home that reflected their mountain modern lifestyle. They purchased a half-acre lot in Truckee’s Schaffer’s Mill development and enlisted the help of Truckee’s In House Builders and residential design firm Mountain Concepts.
A love of the great outdoors and union with “Mother Nature” along with the desire to retain some creature comforts are symbiotically fashioned in this outstanding Log Cabin house plan. Spending time outdoors whether hunting, fishing or hiking, this home provides a wonderful respite from the day’s adventures upon your return home. The cozy home’s exterior is composed of simple construction materials that include 6’x8’ logs, a front covered porch lined with open railing and a side lumber deck. The floor plan is all inclusive as well; there are 1,173 square feet of interior living space containing two bedrooms and one bath in the 1.5 storied home. The 24’ width and 24’plus depth dimensions are ideal for a small and/or narrow lot without compromising space or comfort. Entering the home from the front covered porch, a large living room and second story staircase is revealed. The living room measures in excess of 13’x11’ and features French door access onto the deck and there is a second set of French doors off the adjoining dining room. The kitchen is fully functional with attached modern amenities. There is a main level master bedroom with wonderful window views, generous closet space and an adjacent bath that includes a large vanity, shower and enclosed linen closet. Upstairs, the loft space has balcony overviews into the main level living space and extends the length of the home providing good space for a home office, hobby space or a reading library. There is a second bedroom on this level which comes complete with a spacious footprint, good closet space and a half bath. Double storage spaces sit at either end of the bedroom suite and are accessible from the loft area; this is great storage for seasonal clothing, holiday items or craft supplies. This home features amazing interior and exterior space that allows for a comfortable retreat back to nature whether for a weekend, months or forever.
I lived here for about eight years, and owned it for about fifteen years after I built it in 1976 with local fieldstone and oak logs I cut, peeled and notched on the site, working alone with hand tools. It had no plumbing, I carried water from a nearby spring, and I heated it in winter with about half a cord of wood a week which I cut and burned in the open fireplace. Eventually I moved into Asheville and had to sell it, but it was a large part of my life, and I miss it more with each passing year.
