Use your Silhouette Cameo 4 cutting machine to create all these beautiful home decor projects. Cut fabric, burlap, felt, card-stock, HTV, vinyl and labels.
If you've been trying to figure out how to use your Foil Quill with Silhouette CAMEO 4 you're in luck. In this Silhouette tutorial I'll show you exactly how to get your Foil Quill tips working in the CAMEO 4 - even with the re designed CAMEO 4 tool carriages. Are you ready to make some stunning foiled stickers?! The key to making the Foil Quill play nice with the CAMEO 4 is to use the D adapter that comes with the Foil Quill tools. Best Foil Quill Adapter in Silhouette CAMEO 4 This is labeled for Sizzix and is shaped differently than the A adapter which is the adapter needed to use the Foil Quill in the other Silhouette machines. If you got rid of the extra adapters thinking you'd only need the A adapter to use the quill in your Silhouette machines, you can buy a replacement set of Foil Quill adapters OR you can get a full set with the purchase of any of the quill tips including the new Quill Bevel and Etching tips. Once you have the D adapter, thread it onto the Foil Quill and place it into the left tool carriage - Carriage 1. The adapter does not have teeth, but you can still press in the lock to keep the Foil Quill securely in place. Plug it into a USB adapter or use the WRMK Foil Quill power brick to warm up your Foil Quill tip while you prepare your design. Remember to use the metal plate to prevent the heated tip from damaging the cutting machine while heating OR have it heat up before you place it in the carriage. Foil Quill Cut Settings in Silhouette CAMEO 4 If you are used to using your Foil Quill in your CAMEO 3 or other Silhouette machines, the same settings won't work. They produce too much pressure so you'll need to adjust them. Head over to Silhouette Studio and start in the Send panel. Pick the CAMEO 4 from the machine list and then select the Action as "Sketch". Change the Tool to Sketch Pen. The best cut settings for using the Foil Quill in Silhouette CAMEO 4 are a Force of 4 and a speed of 7 with a single pass. By the way, I found no matter what settings I used with the fine tip Foil Quill it was still too much force and the foil ripped so I would only recommend the standard and bold FQ tips for use in the CAMEO 4. Preparing Your Silhouette Design to Foil Prepare your design in the Design area of the work space. Single line designs and fonts are ideal for sketching and foiling. I'm using the entire set of 16 Foil Quill Christmas Stamps and foiling onto clear (printable) sticker paper from Online Labels. I prefer to place my design slightly down on the cutting mat. I do this as a habit when foiling so IF I decide to foil and cut, like I did here, I can remove the foil before cutting and it's not stuck under the rollers. OPTIONAL STEP: To cut out the stickers, I selected the outer circle and created a small offset. This line will NOT be foiled, only cut. Now you're ready to foil. Place your sticker paper or paper on your cutting mat and your foil on top of that held down with tape or with the edges stuck to the cutting mat and pulled taunt across the paper. If you do this be aware you will get foil bits on your cutting mat. Due to the big metal bar on the CAMEO 4, it's challenging to use the Foil Quill Magnetic Mat in the CAMEO 4 because the magnets want to stick to the bar. Load your cutting mat into the CAMEO 4. If you haven't yet loaded the Foil Quill into Carriage 1 do so now - just make sure it's been warming up for at least about five minutes. Move back to the Send panel. If you created an offset to be used for a cut line, turn that cut line off by selecting it (only) and clicking "No Sketch". When you're ready, click "Send" to begin the foiling. When the foiling is done you can remove the cutting mat if you are completely done. If you created the offset line to cut around your stickers, DO NOT REMOVE YOUR MAT! If you need to cut something out, like I did with the stickers, remove the foil from the mat (leaving the paper or sticker sheet on the mat) and take the Foil Quill out of the carriage. Pop the Autoblade in Carriage 1. Return to the Send panel in Silhouette Studio, this time turn OFF the cut lines for the areas that have already sketched. Turn the cut lines on for the outer offset circle. The AutoBlade and Auto Cut action should automatically be detected. For the Online Labels Clear Sticker Paper, I use the default cut settings in Silhouette Studio for Sticker Paper, Clear. Click Send again to begin the cutting. Once the cutting is done you can unload everything. You should easily be able to remove the negative space of the clear sticker sheet. I just LOVE these clear stickers with the gold foil. They are so classy and look gorgeous! I mean really, how cute are these?! And how happy am I that I can still use my Foil Quill in CAMEO 4. Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Inspiration for MAKING a pretty life!
If you ever wanted to sketch and cut with your Silhouette CAMEO 4, it's possible although not as easy as it is with a machine with dual carriages. The trick to sketch then cut with Silhouette CAMEO 4 is to use cut by line color! Read on for the step by step Silhouette tutorial on sketching then cutting. Unlike a multi color sketch pen design or sketch and cut with Silhouette CAMEO 3 where you can put a blade in one tool carriage and a sketch pen in the other, the dual carriage CAMEO 4 only has one usable carriage for sketch and cut. That means you need to swap the tools in and out of the left tool carriage for a Silhouette sketch and cut. Open Silhouette Studio and open the design you want to sketch. Single line sketch designs are best when drawing with a sketch pen. I grabbed these two from a couple of WRMK sketch pen and foil quill design bundles. How to Create a Cut Line Around a Sketched Design Now we need to create the cut line. You can do this by adding another shape around your design (think tags, cards, stickers) or adding an offset. It really depends on what you're planning on making. Once you have both the sketch design and the cut line we need to adjust the line colors. The line colors of the sketch lines should be a different color than the lines that are going to cut. IN this example all my sketch lines are black and my cut lines are red. Select the lines and from the quick access tool bar adjust the line colors. Sketch and Cut by Line Color in Silhouette Studio Move to the Send panel and select Line. You'll see you have color swatches for each of the different color lines in your designs and you can control the cut settings independently. I would recommend you sketch first and for that reason, I would suggest you drag the black swatch above the red using your mouse. This is an optional step but helps keeps cutting and sketching items in order. Change the tool, action, and material for each color swatch. The Action for the black line should be Sketch with the Tool set as Pen. The Action for the red line should be Cut with the blade or Autoblade tool. We now need to tell the machine to first sketch then pause then cut. But you have an option here: 1. You can add a pause in the software between the sketching and cutting to give yourself time to swap the tools (Right click the first action > Add Pause) 2. You can turn off the cut lines and toggle them on and off as needed (Uncheck the On/Off check box to the left of the second action) I am using option #2 How to Sketch on Silhouette CAMEO 4 Load your paper onto the mat and into your Silhouette CAMEO 4. I am using the American Crafts Cutting Machine Pens in my CAMEO 4 so I am using the D adapter which fits well in the left carriage. When you're ready click Send from the Send panel and the sketching will begin. When the sketching is finished the machine will reset. Do NOT remove the cutting mat or material. ONLY remove the sketch pen and replace it with the Autoblade in the left tool carriage. Cutting Around Sketched Design on Silhouette CAMEO 4 Return to the Send panel. If you are using the Pause option click "Resume" If you are using the On/Off option, uncheck the box for the Black Line and check the box for the Red Line. The cut lines should update in the preview panel showing you that cut lines are now on and the sketch lines are off. Click Send. This time the blade will cut where the black lines are in your work area. When the cutting is done, you're Silhouette sketch and cut project is complete! Note: This post may contain affiliate links. The Silhouette CAMEO 4 pen holder is now available and they're honestly a pretty big deal. The marker and pen holders for the CAMEO 4 open up the possibility to use products - like the Cricut Infusible Ink Markers, these American Craft cutting machine pens, gel pens, and fabric pens - that otherwise can't be used with the CAMEO 4, but can be used with the older model Silhouette machines. I was never a fan of the Silhouette pen holders for the other Silhouette machines, but that's really because given the quality we had better options like the Chomas Creations Pen and Marker holders. Those, however, won't fit in the CAMEO 4 because it's not compatible with the sketch pen adapter. Without the new Silhouette CAMEO 4 pen adapter the only drawing tools that can be used in the new Silhouette machine are the Silhouette sketch pens. The CAMEO 4 Pen Holder changes that opening up the possibilities for third party drawing tools to be used in the new Silhouette machine. The Pen Holder Set includes three different size adapters allowing you to use markers, pens, and pencils of various sizes. To use the holder, find the threaded adapter (included) that fits to slide on your pen or marker... ...then twist it into the larger pen holder base. The CAMEO 4 pen holder only fits in Carriage 1 (the left carriage) of the Silhouette CAMEO 4. In other words, it can not be used in the right carriage or in any of the other Silhouette machines. The sensor on the back of the pen holder tells the tool carriage and software what tool is being used so make sure you lock the pen holder in. Power on and connect the machine. In the Send panel of Silhouette Studio select the Available machine from the machine list. Go to the Design area and open your design. I am using this adorable lamb design. It's created as a single line drawing design specifically for sketch pens or the Foil Quill. Any design will work, but remember, the Silhouette machines will sketch exactly where it would cut - meaning it will draw an outline if you are using a traditional cut file. If you want to fill your design so it's colored in with the pen, you'll need to use a sketch fill. From the Page Setup panel select the machine as Auto CAMEO, the cutting mat as Auto CAMEO, and the media size as Auto 12x12. Return to the Send panel. As long as all the previous selections are correct and the pen holder is in the machine, the Action and Tool should be automatically selected as Sketch and Pen Holder. Place your paper on the cutting mat and load into the Silhouette CAMEO 4 by pressing the up arrow on the touch screen of the machine. From the Send panel press Send and the sketching will begin. When the sketching is complete, the carriage will return to the starting position and you can remove your sketched design. That's it! If you're interested in using other drawing tools besides just the Silhouette sketch pens in the CAMEO 4, get yourself a Pen Holder Set and a set of cutting machine pens. 24" Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro Review. Honest pros and cons of the new 24" CAMEO Pro! Is this 24" vinyl cutting machine right for you?
If your Silhouette CAMEO 4 Autoblade is not cutting there could be several reasons why. If there is something stuck on the blade or debris in or under the cap, it can cause the CAMEO 4 blade not to cut. This is one of the most common CAMEO 4 auto blade problems. This tutorial will walk you through how to use the Autoblade tool to remove the cap and clean it out. Why Is My CAMEO 4 Blade Not Cutting? If your Silhouette CAMEO auto blade is not adjusting or is cutting too deep it could be because there are tiny scraps under the blade cap preventing it from tapping correctly. To fix this, you need to clean out that area. How to Clean the Silhouette CAMEO Autoblade The Silhouette CAMEO 3 and CAMEO 4 machines both come with a small white tool used to remove the cap around the respective blade. The tool - nor the Autoblades - are interchangeable as there are slight differences in the blades and tools that don't allow them to be swapped. The process to use the tool to remove the autoblade cap to clean it, however, is the same. The tool has two holes and an end with two extended teeth. The hole on the side without the teeth is the one for opening the Silhouette CAMEO Autoblade. The hole on the CAMEO 4 specific tool has two tiny teeth that are not present on the CAMEO 3 Autoblade version. I find it easiest to place the CAMEO 4 blade upside down on a flat surface holding it with one hand. Take the cap remover tool in the other hand and place the hole it on top lining up the grooves. Hold it there firmly but gently while twisting. I prefer to apply downward pressuring from the tool (holding it still) while twisting the Autoblade. This will unscrew the small white cap around the blade. Once you've removed the cap clean out anything that might be stuck in that blade cavity or stuck too the blade. If any small scraps have collected in there it can prevent the Silhouette CAMEO 4 blade from cutting or cause it to cut too deep. Once the areas is cleaned out, screw the cap back on making the final twist with the blade cap tool to ensure it's snug, but not overly tight. Other Common CAMEO 4 Autoblade Problems Cleaning around the cap is just one way to troubleshoot CAMEO 4 autoblade problems. If after you've cleaned the blade you're still having cutting issues, check out these five ways to troubleshoot CAMEO 4 blade problems. Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Hello everyone! Today I'm unboxing the NEW Silhouette Cameo 4!! Yes, you heard me right! This machine just came out and I have the pleasure of teaming up
Cricut vs Silhouette, they're the same thing, right? Wrong, this side-by-side comparison shows the features of the maker and cameo.
Silhouette CAMEO 4 autoblades are becoming increasingly more difficult to find, but that doesn't mean you can't cut with your machine. If the CAMEO 4 Autoblade is sold out, switch over and use the Silhouette ratchet blade instead. This manually adjustable blade can be used in any and all Silhouette cutting machines - including all Silhouette CAMEO 4 machines. In order to use the ratchet blade in any of the Silhouette CAMEO 4 machines including the 15" CAMEO Plus and upcoming CAMEO 4 Pro, you will need to use the black tool adapter. As Silhouette School previously confirmed, Silhouette will be releasing a ratchet blade that can be used in the CAMEO 4 without a tool adapter soon, but it's not yet available. How to Use the Black Ratchet Blade in the Silhouette CAMEO 4 With your design set up and ready to cut, start in the Send panel of Silhouette Studio. Select the material you will be cutting. Change the Action to "Cut" and pick "Ratchet Blade" from the Tool dropdown menu. When you make these selections the recommended cut settings will appear below. You'll need to match the blade depth on your blade to the Blade depth recommendation. The ratchet blade has to be manually adjusted so place it into the built in ratchet on the front of your machine and twist until the red mark aligns with the recommended blade depth. This needs to be done because when using the Ratchet Blade because the CAMEO 4 will not and can not tap to adjust the blade depth prior to cutting as it would with the AutoBlade. Place the ratchet blade into the black tool adapter making sure the fin on the blade is sitting in the groove in the tool carriage. If your Silhouette CAMEO 4 machine did not include the black tool adapter, you can get one here. Snap the tool adapter closed making sure the small tab is locked into place. Place the tool into the left tool carriage of the CAMEO 4 making sure there is no gap. Push the lock back so the teeth clamp into the grooves of the adapter. You can also use the Ratchet Blade in the Silhouette Portrait 3 this way. You can now move forward with cutting as you normally would. Note: This post may contain affiliate links. One of the big brags of the Silhouette CAMEO 4 is the power of the high pressure right side tool carriage which is reserved for just three tools: the Rotary Blade, the Punch tool and the 3mm Kraft Blade. The 3mm Silhouette Kraft Blade, which can ONLY be used in the CAMEO 4, is a very powerful tool which not only can cut through thick materials, but can also take advantage of the increased force of Carriage 2. However, it requires a whole different type of cutting - and thinking and planning. I would suggest you read this blog post first before you get started as I've intended it to be an overview with some best practices for using the Silhouette 3mm Kraft Blade. Unlike the AutoBlade or even the CAMEO 4 Rotary blade, you can not just pop the 3mm Kraft Blade in the Silhouette machine and expect to have a successful cut. You need to plan. And you need to be patient. This is NOT a fast process - in either the design or cutting process. If you rush, if you pick the wrong design, and if you try to cut corners you will end up wasting a lot of material and potentially damaging your machine and certainly your materials. THIS is what happens when you put the 3mm Kraft blade in and try to cut with NO knowledge or planning of how to use this very powerful tool. I have spent days upon days and a whole lot of money in testing materials and bad cuts to finally crack the code on the best practices for using the 3mm Kraft Blade. This blade is so new there is NO information out there from Silhouette and there's hardly any default cut settings for materials the manufacture claims to cut. For that reason, I am giving you MY best tips. This is what's worked for me...based on the EXACT materials I'm using. There are a lot of variations of leather and balsa wood and mat board... What Materials Can the 3mm Kraft Blade Cut: The 3mm Kraft Blade should be considered for thick, dense materials. I have successfully cut - multiple times - this genuine Cricut leather, this 2mm balsa wood, and I am currently testing to find the right combination of materials and cut settings for mat board and basswood sheets. Preparing Your Material and Cutting Mat A high tack cutting mat is suggested for a lot of the materials that can be cut with the 3mm Kraft Blade. The mat will keep the material in place - and help prevent slipping - during the necessary multiple passes. You'll also want to tape your material onto the mat to ensure it doesn't move. I used washi tape on all four sides of my material to secure it to the mat. If possible try to put your material towards the center of the mat as opposed to right near the edge of the grid - or at least position your design there. I used both the Silhouette Strong Grip mat and the Cricut Strong Grip Mat. The Silhouette mat is thinner and more pliable. While I successfully cut balsa wood on it, I found the mat bubbled a bit - side to side - while cutting. I think this was due to taping the material to it and then it slowly moving out from under the roller. The bubbling caused the multiple passes to be slightly off which resulted in some bad cuts. There are also no mat supports on the CAMEO 4 so you need a mat sturdy enough to support itself and the material on it. The Cricut mats are thicker and more sturdy. I did not experience any bubbling or mat movement with them. However be aware the thickness of your mat CAN change your cuts because a thicker mat may result in more pressure during cutting. Finally, I found it best to cut from the back side of the material (so the design is cut in reverse). This keeps your mat cleaner (especially on materials like this leather), your cuts cleaner, and if you get a bad cut on the first pass you likely won't even see it on the front side. ;) Picking the Right Design for the 3mm Kraft Blade The 3mm Kraft Blade - and 2mm Kraft Blade for that matter - are NOT for small intricate cuts. I repeat, the Silhouette Kraft Blades are NOT for small intricate cuts. This is a big broad blade. It can not make small intricate cuts. A few other things to keep in mind when picking designs for your Silhouette Kraft Blade. It does better on curves than it does on sharp corners. Designs should be at least a third of an inch wide at their narrowest point. Designs should also be positioned so they are NOT too close to the edge of the material to avoid splintering and to avoid the blade going off the edge of the material. If you have a design - like this three piece bow - I would highly suggest you cut each separately and not all in a single pass. The reason is, if the blade gets caught up at any point, the multiple cut lines can end up off. It's better to have one piece off than three. Trust me...I did a lot of testing. Multiple Passes with Varying Force and Blade Depth Remember that video I shared with you up there? There are two big reasons it did all that grinding. The first is I tried cutting with the loops or smart cuts on. Those are the small cuts in the negative space that the software automatically adds for rotating the blade, when you use the Action "Kraft Cut". The problem is the blade often got stuck in them and then it messed up the entire cut. Turning those off helped significantly. Secondly, I tried to just cut the material at full force at full blade depth from the start. That's NOT how the 3mm Kraft Blade works....if you want to get good cuts. Believe me. I know. Basically you need to first puncture and then score the material with the initial pass. Then you need to add a few more passes increasing the force SLIGHTLY with each pass then finish it with a deeper cut but lesser force. What this does is after you have cut through the material about 95% of the way, the deeper blade depth then does the last pass with just the tip of the blade slicing through the very last layer of the material. By backing off the pressure on this last pass you are preventing the blade from digging in and grinding into your cutting mat. Setting Up Your Design for the 3mm Kraft Blade Since the Silhouette software can't automatically apply varying force with each pass - you'll need to force it to do it. You do that in both the Design area and the Send panel by setting up a stacked set of copies of your design and then utilizing the Cut By Fill Color option. Each of these layers will then be assigned a different cut setting - each with a different force. Cutting by Color with Multiple Passes and Varying Settings In the Send Panel, it will look something like this. You'll notice each color layer has a different Material. All of those custom material settings I had to add manually - and each has a slightly different force as we talked about earlier with the scoring then adding increasing force with each pass. This is something you'll have to do one time for each material you try to cut. Once you add the material set you don't need to do it every time you cut that material again. So the next time I cut a piece of genuine Cricut leather, the settings will already be in there for me. If I cut a different type of leather I will need to add settings for that leather since there are likely variations on thickness!! I will, of course, have a Silhouette tutorial soon on how to add these special types of custom material settings. For today, however, I don't want you to get overwhelmed with information. I just want you to be aware of this different type of cutting when using the 3mm Silhouette Kraft Blade. The final step is to hold on tight. Say a prayer. Sip your wine and press Send. DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM YOUR MACHINE WHILE IT'S CUTTING. I would actually suggest you keep a light hand on the edge of your mat. This first pass is basically a score. You're making a track of the blade to follow for the rest of the passes. If the blade stutters at all - just kind of help it out of the rut by pushing or pulling lightly so it keeps moving. Don't worry if the second pass is slightly off from the first. As long as passes 2-5 are in the same spot you should be okay! The machine will slightly lift the blade between each pass as it adjusts the pressure/force you set up before completing passes 2-4. You'll adjust the actual blade depth after the 4th pass for that final pass. Before you unload the mat and material, check that you can pop your cut out. It should be a clean cut. Once you've confirmed it's a clean cut you can unload the cutting mat and your material. Now you're ready to either cut your next piece or start assembling your project!! Learn how easy it is to cut felt using the new Silhouette Cameo 4 Rotary Blade and how to turn any animal cut file into a cute felt stuffed animal. You guys, I haven’t been this excited about a new crafty tool
The 2mm Silhouette Kraft Blade is now available on pre-order ... but what materials can you cut with the Kraft Blade? The 2mm Kraft Blade can be used in the Silhouette CAMEO 3, Curio, Portrait 2 and the Silhouette CAMEO 4's left carriage (with the tool adapter) to thick materials. I have been testing the 2mm Kraft Blade and am excited with the materials it can cut! The 2mm Kraft Blades are come as a 2 pack. Depending on what you are cutting, expect they could dull fast. Below is a list of materials you can cut with the 2mm Silhouette Kraft Blade. This is of course not an exhaustive list and I will continue to add to it. Please note this 2mm Kraft Blade can NOT be used in the right, high pressure carriage, of the CAMEO 4. Only the 3mm Kraft Blade can be used in the right CAMEO 4 tool carriage. Getting started with Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro is pretty quick and easy...and lucky for you I'm going to walk to you through from unboxing to set up! This Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro beginner tutorial will explain what comes in the box and how to get your machine and Silhouette Studio software. Silhouette CAMEO 4 Unboxing: What's in the Box? When you receive your Silhouette CAMEO 4 machine, you will not only receive the cutting machine, but several other necessary accessories in the box including a power cord, USB cord, CAMEO 4 Auto Blade, ratchet tool, a blue tool adapter for sketch pens, and 24" x 24” cutting mat. (For the record I giggled at the size of the mat!) Power Cord: A two part power cord, which connects to the side of the Silhouette CAMEO machine and to a power source to supply power to the cutting machine USB Cord: The USB Cord is an option to use to connect the CAMEO 4 Pro with the computer when the Bluetooth connection is not being used Type B Auto Blade: A single tap auto-adjusting cutting blade that will automatically adjust the blade depth based on the material type the user selects in Silhouette Studio Blue CAMEO 4 Tool Adapter: The blue tool adapters to use sketch pens in the left tool carriage of the CAMEO 4 Pro. Blade Adjustment Tool: The tool is used to adjust the depth of the black ratchet cutting blade (not included) and to manually adjust the AutoBlade Four Piece Roll Feeder: An adjustable and detachable roll feeder that can be connected in pieces and used to cut various width vinyl rolls If you purchased a CAMEO 4 Pro bundle you will have an assortment of other tools and accessories as well. What comes in the box with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro is slightly different than what comes with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 and CAMEO 4 Plus. In fact, it's one of the only differences between the CAMEO Pro vs CAMEO 4 and CAMEO Plus. Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro Video Unboxing To ensure your 24" Silhouette machine cuts and operates correctly, it's very important to make sure all packing material and tape is removed. Be especially careful to remove the cardboard and foam piece hidden to the left of the tool carriage. You'll need to move the carriage to the right to remove all the packing material. Don't forget the piece of tape on the back of the machine securing the built in vinyl trimmer. Silhouette CAMEO 4 Set Up Start by connecting the two power cords. The smallest end plugs into the side of the CAMEO 4 Pro. With the power cord plugged in, press the Power button on the side of the machine to turn on the machine. The control panel on the right side of the machine will light up. I would now suggest you plug in the USB cord and connect it between the CAMEO Pro and your computer. This is an optional step as the Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro does have bluetooth. Open the Bluetooth settings on your computer and pair the two devices if they don't automatically pair. This should only need to be done on initial setup. Register Silhouette CAMEO Pro to Activate Warranty Before you begin using your Silhouette CAMEO Pro, you should activate the 1 year warranty by registering your new cutting machine with Silhouette America. The serial number can be found on the back of the machine. Use it as you go through the registration process on the Silhouette America website. 24" Silhouette CAMEO 4 and Silhouette Studio Software Set Up Silhouette CAMEO 4 requires Silhouette Studio V4.4.350 - at a minimum - to run. All users - new and existing - will need to install this version or higher for the software to recognize the new CAMEO Pro machine. A software CD is not included with the Silhouette CAMEO 4. The free Silhouette Studio software can be downloaded from the Silhouette America website. Please note: You do not need a Silhouette CAMEO 4, Plus, or Pro to run this version of the software. Machine-specific features (such as the 24x24" mat option) will not show up unless a CAMEO 4 Pro, for example, is plugged in and powered on. Existing Users Adding on a CAMEO 4 If you have an older Silhouette CAMEO or Portrait and are adding a CAMEO 4 Pro on you can update the software and basically start cutting with it. Once the machine is connected to your computer via USB and/or Bluetooth and powered on, the software should recognize it in your Send panel's Machine List. Select the machine to pick it to cut with...once selected, "Auto" settings in the Page SetUp panel will adjust to match the selected machine. Any software upgrades - Designer Edition, Designer Edition Plus and Business Edition - should automatically go with the software update and you do not need to re purchase an upgrade to use with your CAMEO 4. If the software upgrade becomes de-activated follow this Silhouette tutorial to find your license key and reactive the Silhouette Studio upgrade. Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro Beginners: Brand New User Set Up In addition to the steps above to register your CAMEO 4 Pro and install the Silhouette Studio software for the first time, you'll also need to create a Silhouette America account and set up your Silhouette Cloud in your Silhouette Library. Create a free Silhouette America account here. This is a necessary and mandatory step. Next launch the Silhouette Studio software you downloaded and installed on your computer. Start by going to the Library tab along the top right. This will prompt you to sign into the library. Use the same log in credentials you used to create your Silhouette America account. You'll want to set up the Cloud right away. Once signed in, your name will appear at the top left of your library with several default folders underneath. The sub folder "Free With Machine" within the Design folder is where the free Silhouette designs that come with the CAMEO 4 Pro can be found. Designs you import into the software and those designs you create and save to the library will be stored in the User Designs folder unless you create and specific a different sub folder. Cutting Different Width Materials on the CAMEO Pro When you're ready to make your first cut with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro you may need to make some adjustments on your machine as well. Depending on the size of the material and/or the cutting mat you are using, the right roller can be adjusted to make it possible to cut material between 8" wide and 24" wide both with and without a cutting mat. To adjust the right roller's position along the roller bar on the CAMEO Pro, flip the roller bar lever down. Move the right roller to line up with the appropriate mark on the roller bar. In the picture above, I have marked the roller positions in red to make them easier to see. Here's what they look like close up... After moving the roller to the correct position, flip the roller bar lever back up to lock the roller bar in place and lower the roller so it can grab the mat or material as it feeds through. CAMEO Pro Mat Support If you are cutting with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro mat support, hook the lip under the front of the machine so it pops into place. Make sure the machine is still sitting evenly on the surface when the mat support piece is installed. Adjust it so it's towards of the middle of the machine so it helps support the 24x24" cutting mat. CAMEO 4 Pro Cross Cutter The CAMEO 4 Pro cross cutter is found along the back of the machine. Press down the locks on each side at the same time to unfold it before using it. CAMEO Pro Roll Feeder If and when you are cutting rolls of vinyl or HTV you will want to assemble the detachable roll feeder. The roll feeder comes in four pieces. There are two roll holders, an end-piece locking mechanism which helps keep the whole thing in place, and a bar that stretches across all of them. Hook all four pieces into the lip under the front of the CAMEO Pro and then place the crossbar into place. You can adjust the position of the roll feeder cradle to accommodate different length / thickness rolls by turning the lock and and extending the roller extension piece on each the left and adjustable roll feeder piece. Tighten the knob to keep the extension roller in place. When you are not using the roll feeder you can nest it together to store. And your Silhouette CAMEO Pro is all set up! Keep in mind, all of the free tutorials on Silhouette School Blog are still applicable to the CAMEO 4 - you will find just very slight differences with the advancements of the AutoBlade and tool adapters. If you're the proud new owner of a Silhouette CAMEO 4 and you want to decorate it, I have a free Silhouette cut file for you. The free CAMEO 4 skin template is perfect for the left sliding front panel...and it's a great first Silhouette CAMEO 4 project! All you need to do is head over to So Fontsy and download the free Silhouette CAMEO 4 design to your computer. This makes a great Silhouette CAMEO 4 vinyl project since it's just a single solid cut. Start by opening Silhouette Studio. Remember you must use Silhouette Studio V4.3.240 or higher to run your CAMEO 4. Go to File > Open and find the .studio file (or SVG which is included in the free download) you downloaded on your computer. Click it to open in Silhouette Studio. It will open in the Design area. Do not resize the cut file at all. It's perfectly sized to fit the CAMEO 4 front left panel which slides out to the left for tool storage. Design Panel: Preparing a Design to Cut in Silhouette Studio Click the Page Set Up tool on the right sidebar. Check that the following settings are selected: Machine: Auto (CAMEO) Cutting Mat: CAMEO 12 x 12 Media Size: Auto (12 x 12) To limit waste, move the design to one of the corners of your virtual cutting mat. Most people place it in the upper left corner of the cutting mat. Finally from the Page Set Up panel move the Reveal bar all the way to the right, if it's not already. This will turn on the grid lines. Notice the blocks that are your design is covering. These are the same squares on the actual Silhouette cutting mat where your material needs to be placed. (We'll get to that part in a moment). Preparing Your Silhouette Mat and Blade to Cut Before moving to the Send panel, make sure your CAMEO 4 is powered on and connected to your computer. Also be sure your CAMEO 4 AutoBlade is inserted and locked into the left tool carriage (Carriage 1). Take your material (I'm using vinyl) and place it on the sticky, gridded area of the Silhouette cutting mat (be sure to remove the blue cover to expose the sticky area). If you are not using a full sheet of material make sure the scrap piece is covering those same boxes on the mat where your design is covering in Silhouette Studio. Place the cutting mat so the top edge is gently resting up against the rollers and the left edge is aligned with the gray lines and arrows on the left side of the CAMEO 4. Hold it there gently while you click the up arrow on the touch panel. The mat will be pulled under the rollers. Send Panel: Selecting Your Cut Settings and Material Back in Studio open the Send panel. Because of the auto tool detection feature, the software is able to detect the blade you have in the carriage and update the recommend cut settings. However, you will still need to select your material. I would suggest you cut the skin out of vinyl, printable vinyl, or printable waterproof sticker paper. Change the material type from the Material list and then the cut settings will update for the selected material. The design should have a bold red line around it. These are the cut lines. If your design does NOT have bold red lines, select the design and click "Cut" as the Action. First Silhouette CAMEO 4 Cut At the bottom of the Send Panel click "Send". The AutoBlade will first begin tapping to adjust to the recommended blade setting then the cutting will begin. When the cutting is complete click the down arrow on the touch panel to remove the mat from the machine. Now you'll need to remove the excess vinyl around your design. This process is called weeding. You can trim around your design with scissors before using a hook tool to remove the extra vinyl around the design. For vinyl you need a transfer material - I prefer transfer tape - to move the vinyl decal from the backing to the surface. Cut a piece of clear transfer tape, remove it off the backing, and then carefully lay it over your CAMEO 4 vinyl skin. Use a scraper to burnish the tape onto the vinyl and then peel up the tape from the corner so the vinyl comes with it...and exposes the adhesive on the back of the vinyl. Carefully position the CAMEO 4 skin over the left panel lining up the top edge. Press down from there. When the entire vinyl skin has been applied, again burnish it. This time peel the transfer tape up from the corner leaving the vinyl behind on the CAMEO 4. I love the little pop of color covering the tool carriage storage slot is..and it's so easy and quick with this free CAMEO 4 vinyl skin template!! Finally, if you think you're gonna be tricky and reverse the image to cut a second skin for the right panel ... STOP RIGHT THERE! That is the touch panel and you definitely don't want to cover that with anything. Don't forget! I got out the Silhouette Cameo today to play around with these bracelet cuffs and the Chomas Creations precision tip. These bracelets are just 1/4 inch wide so imagine just how tiny those fonts are :) I did make a template where I first cut out the size of the bracelet on cardstock so that I could line it up best in the machine. I did slow the speed down and did a multi cut of 3. You can find the Chomas Creations engraving tools here... Chomas Creations precision tool Just a heads up that it is very tough to take pics of shiny things!!! If you want to see the video of it in action you can go here... Like what you see?
