Pair Sterling Silver candlesticks, James Charles Jay, London, England antique 1898 late Victorian each with a shaped and beaded sconce, Corinthian fluted column and capital, on a decorative stepped and beaded square base. A wonderful, substantial and increasingly rare matching pair of loaded Greek Corinthian candlesticks in 925 Sterling Silver. A renowned English silversmith, the maker joined the family firm that had been established sometime before 1865 in Essex Street, London by his father, James Jay. This pair of candlesticks are the epitome of beauty on any mantelpiece, table or shelf and would make a lovely addition to any collection or gift. Corinthian columns are the most ornate, slender and sleek of the three Greek orders. They are distinguished by a decorative, bell-shaped capital with volutes, acanthus leaves and an elaborate cornice. In many instances like this, the column is fluted. Each column stands on a substantial beaded and stepped base. Date mark: Each hallmarked 'J.J' into square for James Charles Jay, lion passant for 925 Sterling Silver, Lions head for London town assay office and date letter 'c' for 1898. Removeable sconces have matching hallmarks including makers mark and date letter. Size (approximate): Each, Weight 540g 1.2lb, Width and Depth of base 9cm 3.5in, Height 16cm 6.3in. Condition: Fine examples in excellent condition for age with original snug-fitting sconces, just as they should be. Typical minor signs of use including very small dents to some corners, rubbing to hallmarks and polish residue. Polished but fine detailing may enhance further. Please see photographs for confirmation. Background: James Jay, an established silversmith and retailer, was active in 1865 with premises at 366 Essex Street, London. He acquired the London-based manufacturer, pawnbroker and retailer Richard Attenborough & Co Ltd (Estb., 1796) of 142-144 Oxford Street in 1887, a firm describing itself as ‘Goldsmiths, Diamond Merchants and Watchmakers’. He died in the mid 1890's and the firm was continued by his nephews, James Charles Jay, a registered and active silversmith, who ran the Oxford Street premises, and Robert William Jay, who ran the Essex Street premises. They became a limited liability company on the 4th May 1897 and by 1904 the firm renamed to become Jay, Richard Attenborough & Co Ltd. Like many prominent 19th and 20th century antique silver dealers, Attenborough could trace its genealogy into the 18th century. The firm closed in the 1960s.
