The early American term "cutter" describes a light sleigh with a single seat-board that can accomodate two or three passengers drawn by one horse. This type of sleigh became a standard part of most carriage houses, as their relative lightness made them favorite winter vehicles for "trotting" enthusiasts. Brewster & Co. won a first prize medal at the London Exhibition in 1862 for their design of this vehicle.
This one is for sale, but out of my price range. Saving for future reference.
