Johnstone Castle hasn't always been called Johnstone Castle, it used to be called Easter Cochrane, and was the property of the Cochranes of that Ilk. Waldeve de Cochrane was witness to a charter in the year 1262, and the family remained here for several centuries. In 1647, Sir John Cochrane of that Ilk, for the service he had provided to King Charles I before his execution, was created Lord Cochrane of Dundonald, and then Earl of Dundonald in 1669, by Charles II Not long afterwards in 1733, Easter Cochrane was acquired by the Houstons of Johnstone, a property on the other side of the Black Cart Water, who disposed of their old property but brought the name with them (a bit like selling your car but keeping the registration plates).
