Mere Down House - Mere, Wiltshire - England
In Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The castle is set on 90 acres and is in the heart of the Berkshires, New England's playground of the rich and famous. The price tag is $15 million. It has 36 fireplaces, lots of beautiful marble and most importantly a dungeon. No indication about whether or not there is a ghost in residence. We must hope. I was surprised to find that there are other "Searle" Castles in the area- one in Windham, NH pictured below. The Castle is currently operated as an event locale and owned by the Sisters of Mercy. At one time the Sisters operated a College but the building was in need of such extensive repairs they moved the college. With the help of grants, and donations of talent and materials by interior designers the castle has been restored to its current grandeur. And one in Methuen, Massachusetts. Seen here: According to a Methuen Historical website the property is still used by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary: 1957 the 74 room " Searles castle" was sold to the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary for $160,000. The Presentation of Mary Academy and convent now occupies this site and the Searles Chapel is known as Our Lady of Sacred Heart. The St. Claire Residence, named for Mother Claire D'Assise, was built in 1958, the new Academy wing in 1962, and the new Provincial House in 1985. So it seems only right that the Great Barrington castle be purchased by a Religious order. I have a few in mind and I'll have to forward the listing to them.

The jewel in the Stourhead crown has to be the world-famous 18th-century landscape garden. A magnificent lake shimmering with reflections of classical temples, mystical grottoes and rare and exotic trees. Secrets of the Hoare family history are revealed at Stourhead House (orginally the family holiday home!) with the chance to discover the unique Regency library, collections of Chippendale furniture and inspirational paintings, all set amid 'picnic perfect' lawns and parkland. The lake and house are at the heart of a 1,072-hectare (2,650-acre) estate where chalk downs, ancient woods and farmland are managed for people and wildlife to enjoy - National Trust Stourhead site description. As one meanders around the lake path the view changes at every bend. Not all of the buildings and carefully created scenes are visible at once. Thus it is a journey of sorts to navigate the grounds not knowing what will be around the next turn or grove of trees. On the above sign found at Stourhead Alexander Pope, 18th century poet and garden proponent, lyrically states the aim of the well designed landscape. As the formal garden with its topiary figures fell out of popularity in lieu of the more natural landscape gardens, Pope published a satirical catalogue of topiary for sale. Here's something lovely if you have a few minutes to spare.

Castle Coole, built int 1798, is set in 700 acres of parkland is an outstanding example of the Irish response to the Palladian ideal. The house is a model of symmetry and the quality of the stone masonry is consummate with all four frontages equally perfect. The house was designed by James Wyatt for Armar Lowry-Corry, the first Earl of Belmore, a member of the Irish Parliament. Lord Belmore intended that Castle Coole be a showpiece to proclaim his standing in Irish society and influence in the Irish House of Commons, where his family held five seats. This house certainly is a showpiece. I found the grounds and setting of the house to be nearly ideal due to the labor of volunteers who have preserved and maintained them. The “front” of the house is northern facing, which is rather unusual as the main approach to the house is from the south The site is sloped from north to south as well so the effect on seeing the house initially is a shadowed, almost ominous façade. There is not much of a difference between the front and the back of the house architecturally, and it stands like a temple, symmetrical and perfect. I was impressed by the smoothness of the curved alcoves and the perfectly cut square blocks. The masonry was truly outstanding. If you eyed up the face of the front of the building from corner to corner, there was no more than inches in deviation. Lovely building in a lovely setting. There are miles of trails here as well, offering plenty of walking and tree observing. Many of the trees were quite old and striking. Thankfully, this large expanse of land has not been parceled and his held by the National Historic Trust for the continuing enjoyment of the public
