From the beds we wake up in to the buses we take and the offices we work at, it often seems like we live on a man-made planet. But the natural world is all around us, all the time. It's just we build such intricate hideouts, we sometimes forget about it. So let's refresh our memory.

Black swallowtail caterpillar, last instar UPDATE 6-22-12: the 3rd chrysalis turned very dark yesterday but never opened ... it must be waiting for morning sun. I've got to go check on it again! My neighbor Julie has joined the Caterpillar Watch. We're determined to actually see one open. There are 4 more caterpillars coming along, in about their 3rd instars. Stay tuned! UPDATE 9:15 am - the 3rd Black swallowtail is out & sunning! I missed him coming out of the chrysalis because I was lying on ice - my back's giving me fits this week. But he (or she) is gorgeous. Now I'll have to wait for the last 4 caterpillars to grow up. FINAL UPDATE: 11:00 am - the 3rd Black swallowtail is gone! But I did get some nice shots that I'll post soon. In July we should have more chrysalises to watch. And in late August - the Monarchs will return! And we'll have Monarch cats in September. I finally found Monarch caterpillars on the milkweed yesterday - but just 4. Today I can only find 2. It's been a pitiful season for Monarchs down here. I only saw one female come through a couple of weeks ago and may not see any more. This guy is almost fully grown. He'll turn to chrysalis right here in my yard and a Monarch will emerge by October - and will fly to Mexico to spend the winter. He is the 4th generation that will live 9 months to return to the States in the Spring. My 15 remaining Black swallowtail caterpillars are doing well, but it's hard to make sure they have enough fennel to eat this late in the season. Our one fennel plant has 99% turned brown and gone to seed. The cats must have fresh green sprigs to survive. I'm buying organic fennel to supplement the plant in the yard. UPDATE 9-18-12: hi everybody - I've been so behind because we've been remodeling all summer, and now the house is being painted. I'm about to lose my mind ... but that aside, they're painting this office today so I have to close everything down. I'll catch up soon on the other side of painting ;-O
