From the beds we wake up in to the buses we take and the offices we work at, it often seems like we live on a man-made planet. But the natural world is all around us, all the time. It's just we build such intricate hideouts, we sometimes forget about it. So let's refresh our memory.

Black swallowtail caterpillar, last instar UPDATE 6-22-12: the 3rd chrysalis turned very dark yesterday but never opened ... it must be waiting for morning sun. I've got to go check on it again! My neighbor Julie has joined the Caterpillar Watch. We're determined to actually see one open. There are 4 more caterpillars coming along, in about their 3rd instars. Stay tuned! UPDATE 9:15 am - the 3rd Black swallowtail is out & sunning! I missed him coming out of the chrysalis because I was lying on ice - my back's giving me fits this week. But he (or she) is gorgeous. Now I'll have to wait for the last 4 caterpillars to grow up. FINAL UPDATE: 11:00 am - the 3rd Black swallowtail is gone! But I did get some nice shots that I'll post soon. In July we should have more chrysalises to watch. And in late August - the Monarchs will return! And we'll have Monarch cats in September. Winner, Challenge Group, Green nature, 6-12 Winner, Game, Something slow, 2-14

When people see a caterpillar inching its way across a blade of grass or your jacket, they’re bound to react in one of two ways. They either say, “Oh, cool” or they run away yelling, “No, no, no, no, no!” Caterpillars are gorgeous and more than a little peculiar. But have you ever taken a closer look at them? Especially at what their 'legs' and ‘feet’ look like?

This is the final instar caterpillar of a Sunbeam butterfly, just prior to pupation. The caterpillars are remarkable enough for the twin periscopes on their hind ends which contain tentacle organs. When threatened, the caterpillar (including at this prepupal stage) telescopes these structures outwards of their sheath in the form of a bouquet of hair-like tentacles which whirl around. This is presumably a defensive mechanism designed to alarm a potential predator, but it is hypothesised that they may also have a volatile secretion dissipation function as well. This is an immobile, non-feeding phase of the life cycle during which the larva adhers itself to the leaf surface with a bed of silk and a barely visible single-strand silk girdle. The tentacle organs' cylindrical sheaths are lost with the final moult into pupation. Pu'er, Yunnan, China see comments for additional view.....
