I know how easy it is for a small mistake on any construction site to cause a massive disaster.
This cathedral is dedicated to Saint Denis, whose grave it was built on between the years 1136 and 1286. It contains the very first choir that was constructed using all the Gothic elements typical for that architectonic style. The grounds beneath it used to serve as a cemetery, and the cathedral continued with that, since most of the kings and queens of France are buried here. The church was one of the first to promote the art of light and it is equipped with beautiful stained glass clerestory windows that give this place a completely different and magical atmosphere, worthy of the royalty that rests here forever. This place gives you the possibility to live through 12 centuries of history of France in one day while feeling the serene silence of the ones who used to rule it. You can get here by subway line 13, station Basilique de Saint-Denis.

Amiens is a city in northern France, divided by the Somme river. It’s known for the Gothic Amiens Cathedral and nearby medieval belfry. Shops and cafes line the Quartier St.-Leu’s narrow streets. Floating market gardens (“hortillonnages”) dot the city’s canals. The Musée de Picardie shows art and antiquities spanning centuries. Nearby, the Maison de Jules Verne is a museum where the science fiction author once lived.

Eighty-five miles northeast of Paris there stands on the plateau of the old town of Laon one of the great, undervisited Gothic cathedrals of France, Notre-Dame de Laon. Luminous by its vast, clear windows, by the light streaming in from its lantern tower, and by its bright, naked stone, Notre-Dame de Laon on a sunny day is a beacon calling the traveler well off the beaten track. If you know the other Notre-Dames north of the Loire Valley, now consider Laon’s.
