To have a safe and educational classroom here is a list of My Top Ten Must Have Items For CCD. 1. Be Organized- To be a good CCD teacher you must be organized. Be sure to have your lesson plans organized to keep you from leaving things behind and you can find what you want when you need it. Organize your CCD activities at home so you can find what you want when you need it. Searching for certain items can be stressful and since most catechists are volunteers time is something they do not want to waste. 2. Classroom Rules- Every classroom needs rules so that everyone can learn to their fullest potential and the class can run smoothly and effectively. When establishing classroom rules you should identify behavioral expectations for your classroom. Having a well behaved classroom is critical for proper learning. For the students to learn to their fullest potential they need an environment that is quiet, without distractions, and organized. To be able to achieve this is to keep disruptive behavior down to the minimum. Classroom management is rather tricky and teachers need ideas and strategies on how to manage their classroom effectively and efficiently. Teachers therefore need to use good behavior classroom strategies and games for managing classroom behavior. When behaviors become a problem in a classroom an effective strategy is to implement a behavior contract. 3. Tool Caddies- A great place to store classroom supplies (pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, etc.) so they will be ready and easily accessible. *TIP: Just put what supplies the students need to do the activity in the caddy and place it in the middle of the table. Avoid putting extra supplies in the caddy that are not needed. Students will probably use them and supplies can be limited in some CCD programs. Students will also tend to make a bigger mess when too many supplies are available for them to use. 4. Dry Erase Board or Chalk Board- A great place to write vocabulary words, assignments, key words, etc. 5. Agenda Book/Student Planner- An organized student stays current on assignments and will achieve success in school. Agenda books help students develop sound organization skills that will teach them a successful lifelong journey through school. 6. Student Folder/Binder- To cut down on lost papers and to be better organized, give your students folders or binders. What teachers use for student folders depends upon the grade level and what kind of work the student does in class. It can be as simple as a folder with two pockets with or without brads and be as elaborate as a small binder with dividers. 7. Assignment Sheets, Progress Reports, Grade Sheets- Keeping accurate records of student assignments is necessary for good parent/teacher communication. It also helps students be more organized and be able to turn assignments on time. 8. Homework- To encourage my students to do homework I have them play HOMEWORKOPOLY. In order for a student to play HOMEWORKOPOLY, he or she must complete their homework and hand it in to the teacher on time. This is how the student moves around the game board and can receive prizes. If the student does not have their homework finished, they do not get their chance to roll the dice and move for the day. Throughout the year, day by day we keep the game going. By starting at the beginning of the year everyone gets into it and by the end of the year everyone is doing their homework regularly. 9. Computer/Copier Machine- Print worksheets, puzzles, crafts, etc. for your students. Make extra copies just in case you get a new student or if someone brings a friend to class. 10. Supplies- Every classroom must have classroom supplies to survive. I need paper, crayons, colored pencils, glue, glue sticks, construction paper, glitter, clear contact paper, folders, etc. Since classroom supplies are limited at our parish I buy what we need way before CCD starts when all the stores have sales for Back To School items. I store all my CCD crafts and games in a closet and all my craft patterns and file folder games in portable file box with a handle and everything is in individual labeled file folders. What are your tops things that you must have for CCD? Please comment and I will add it to the post.
It’s true that the words “sister” and “nun” are used interchangeably to describe women religious in the Catholic church, but there are several differences in the lifestyle, ministry and vows of nuns vs. apostolic women religious.

(This lesson is in accordance with the new Roman Missal that is to be implemented on November 27, 2011.) *Be sure to adjust this lesson to fit the needs of your students. (Please take in consideration that I am just a Mom and I'm providing these lessons and activities to the best of my abilities. I will try to make them as accurate as possible, but I know I will make a few mistakes and it was not intentional.) Gospel means “good news” and the reading is taken from the New Testament. During the Gospel we stand and listen to the priest read from the Book of the Gospels. If incense is used, the priest puts some into the thurible. After this, the deacon who is to proclaim the Gospel, bowing profoundly before the priest, asks for a blessing, saying in a low voice: Your blessing, Father. The priest says in a low voice: May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies: Amen. If, however, a deacon is not present, the priest, bowing before the altar, says quietly: Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel. The Deacon, or the Priest, then proceeds to the ambo, accompanied, if appropriate, by ministers with incense and candles. There he says: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Priest: A reading from the holy Gospel according to N. *At the same time, he makes the Sign of the Cross on the book and on his forehead, lips, and breast. The people make a fist with their right hand and with our thumb we make a small Sign of the Cross on our forehead, on our lips and over our heart and silently pray, “God be in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.”) People: Glory to you, O Lord. Then the deacon, or the priest, incenses the book, if incense is used, and proclaims the Gospel. At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims: The Gospel of the Lord. All reply: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Then he kisses the book, saying quietly: Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away. Then follows the homily, which is to be preached by a priest or deacon. The homily may even be given by a Bishop or a priest who is present at the celebration but cannot concelebrate. During the homily the people sit. This is when the priest shares special thoughts and ideas with us to help us connect the gospel to our own life experiences. After the homily a brief period of silence is appropriately observed. Questions: What does Gospel mean? (Good News) Do we stand or sit during the Gospel? (Stand) What book is the Gospel read from? (The Book of the Gospels) Is the Gospel from the Old or New Testament? (New) Who reads the Gospel? (A deacon or a priest.) Where do we cross ourselves three times? (Once on the forehead, once on our lips, and once over our heart.) When we cross ourselves three times, what do we say? (“God be in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.”) Who does the homily? (A deacon or a priest.) Do we stand or sit during the homily? (Sit) What is a homily? (This is when the priest shares special thoughts and ideas with us to help us connect the gospel to our own life experiences.) Craft/Activity: Lesson 11: Preparing for the Gospel- Children Discover the Mass by Mary Doefler Dall An inventive way to help children learn to make the Sign of the Cross on our forehead, on our lips and over our heart and silently pray, “God be in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.” (Craft/Activity directions pages 59 – 60). I adapted a version of this game: Passages of the Prophets The Prophets Game: The object of the game is to be the first player to go from square number 1 to square number 80. Age 5 to adult. Need: Playing piece for each player 1 die Question Cards Game Board Set Up: Place your game pieces near square number one. Shuffle the deck and place it face down in a small basket near the game board. Put an empty basket nearby for the discards. Rules: Basically the game is like Chutes and Ladders. Roll the die and move the corresponding number of squares. Each player gets one roll each turn. If you land on a square with an arrow on it, follow the arrow to where it ends. Arrows can go up or down. If you land on a prophet square, the person on your right picks up a Question Card and reads it out loud (if they cannot read it, someone else can read it for them). On each card is a question about a prophet from the Bible. If you answer correctly, you get to take an extra turn. If not, the game moves on to the next player. (For younger students they do not have to answer a question, they get to take an extra turn.) The first player to square #80 is the winner. You must land there by exact count. If your roll takes you past square #80, don’t move. Try again on your next turn. The Prophets Game- Directions, Game Board, Question Cards
