A broken CD isn't much good to anyone. Unless you're Sean Avery that is. Because while most of us would just throw them in the trash, the South Africa-born, Australia-based artist turns them into various dazzling animal sculptures. He makes them by gluing CD shards to wire mesh frames shaped like different animals, and as you can see from his iridescent animal kingdom, there seems to be no limit to the types of creatures he can create.
Instead of throwing things out and having them end up in the landfill, reuse your stuff! 1. to start off, this project wasn't something i just did, as it has been hanging in my office for almost 2 years, but it was a DIY project none the less! i work with ALL guys (i know...horrible (some days)) so there isnt an overabundance of estrogen, but i was determined to make my office my girly space. we happened to be getting rid of a bunch mini CD's at work and instead of throwing them away, i decided to take them home to see if i could figure out a way to use them. i googled DIY projects using CD's and i came across this gorgeous chadelier that someone made out of them, it definitely captured my attention. i purchased a gold hoop from michaels for $.99, as well as some fake bulk crystals for $2.99. i also used mono-filament cord that i already had (can be purchased for $1.99 though) i started by tying the mono-filament across the hoop. i divided the hoop into 12 different sections. and then tied mono-filament from 3-4 different places on each of the 12 sections. i then took strands of mono-filament string and tied one end to one of the mini CD's, then strung some of the"crystals" onto the string. i did this process 35-40 times with some variation in the length of the strings (longest being in the very middle and shorter to the edges) and the amounts of beads. i then tied 3 equal length strings of mono-filament on 6 different areas so the middle of all strings would meet and form a place that i could attach a hanger from. (the finished product pictures were taken in my bathroom while was hanging from my shower curtain rod, but who cares) it now hangs in my office and definitely offers the "girly" aspect my office was in desperate need of :) Pin It

We are standing on the bridge of our own paintings! Claude Monet and the Impressionists are my very favorite and I really enjoy sharing that love with my students. This project is a special one. We end up having two works of art when we are finished! After learning a bit about Monet's life we use acrylic paint to create a painting inspired by one of his Japanese Bridge paintings. Except for part of the water, students use qtips to give the painting that quick Impressionistic feel. I encourage the students to remember to paint like an Impressionist - worry about the impression of the trees, bushes, water, and flowers instead of painting details (the qtips really help with this). This took a couple class periods. During one of them, I set up a "green screen" (big piece of bulletin paper - next year I'm going to invest in green fabric!) and had the students pose as if they were on the bridge of their painting. This helped me remove the background using Keynote's Alpha tool. From there I combined the student image with a digital image of their painting. Then students touched up the bridge with paint to make it look as if they were behind the front railings of their bridge. In one of my buildings, we wrapped up this fun project by creating a tissue paper water lilly to put up with our paintings. Draw out a lilly pad on a green paper Use 8 layers of tissue & accordion fold Attach a pipe cleaner & spread out layers of flower Poke into lilly pad & twist in back It put a smile on my face listening to the reaction of the other students as they came down the hall to lunch or to the Art Room. "Oh Cool!" One 5th grader said, "Those are great - are we going to do them?" I told him - sorry that's one of my 3rd grade lessons. He responded with "That's not fair! We didn't have you for 3rd grade!" --Made my day and the aches from going up and down the ladder putting the display up so worth it!

This activity combines art, science, and play. I'm not overselling it when I say, it's downright mesmerizing. Both my boys played with these tirelessly, and it was only until it was bedtime when they were forced to stop (truthfully, I had to confiscate them). Even my husband said he wanted one for his office. I can just picture him spinning and spinning while on long teleconferences. Any how, enough already. Here's what we did and how. All you need is: Old CDs Marbles Plastic bottle caps Hot glue Paper (we used printable CD labels) Markers On printable CD label stickers, we divided most of the labels into quadrants or eighths by folding. Then we colored them using markers, choosing colors that when combined make another color: blue and yellow = green black and white = grey red and yellow = orange We decorated two additional ones however we felt - one with dots in a circle, and the other with numerals. (If you don't have CD labels, cut paper in a circular shape the same size as the CD and cut a hole in the center, tracing the CD to get the right size. Then use glue to adhere it. Or use permanent markers and draw directly on the underside of the CD!) Once the labels were stuck on, we applied hot glue liberally around the hole on the bottom of the CD and stuck a marble (the small ones work perfectly) in. Within a minute, the glue had hardened and the marble was secure. Now we applied a ring of glue to the top of the CD around the center hole (on top of our colored label) and added a plastic cap. All that was left to do was grip the cap and get our tops spinning. It was SO much fun to see how the colors blended together. Our dotted top looked like it had a circular solid grey line on it, which my son was surprised by. We studied the tops a long time. Sometimes the color we expected only appeared when the top's spin began to slow, other times it was immediately apparent. This was a perfect indoor activity for a hot summer day. Our inspiration came from Mini Matisse and the wonderful book Science Wizardry for Kids.

UPDATE: Go HERE for my CD Weaving Tutorial Here are the CD weavings my students made. I love the variety! Each student made at least one. As with every artist and every project, some worked more quickly than others. I cut out "needles" from plastic lids, then used a paper punch to make the "eye". The flexible needles were easy to use, and the large eye made threading easy enough even for my youngest students. The artists changed yarns as frequently as they wished, but I encouraged them to finish the yarn on their needle just to avoid wasting it. The knot was tucked in under the weaving. I attached the disks to each other in columns with twist ties. The top disk has a twist tie loop so the column can be push pinned to the wall. The sign for one of my schools is made from a cake cardboard I happened to have on hand... You can see how some of these are really dimensional. The thicker the yarn and the tighter the weaving is pulled, the puffier the piece. Make it a Wonderful Day!

Three schools (Hutchinson, Oxford, and Wellsville) from across Kansas met today at the Kansas Capitol in Topeka to complete a CD weaving installation sculpture. The students worked from 9:00a until 11:30a tying the individual weavings together into a large tapestry. There were nearly 600 weavings between all of the participating schools (those unattended were Pittsburg State University, Troy, and Osawatomie). The weavings will be in the capitol until Saturday, March 7th for the celebration of Youth Art Month. Parents and students are encouraged to attend! Students assemble the CD weavings How awesome for our students! Thank you for your continued support in our arts,Mrs. DeAnna Morgan Wellsville High School/ Wellsville Middle School
