Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester, Leicestershire (Click on an image for a larger version) Welford Road is a large cemetery in the middle of the city. Although the "great and the good" are buried here parts of the cemetery are in a very poor condition. However we were impressed by the 100 memorial plaques to notable people buried in this cemetery. The plaques are laid out on the footprint of two demolished chapels. We photographed several of interest and then used the maps provided to find the graves. Seven of Emma Harvey's children died aged 8 or younger - 2 only a few months after their Mother had also died. Shaddows instead of shadows. Oh dear! Old cemetery bathed in dappled sunshine and deep shade. Original acrylic painting 11x14 inch artist canvas panel This piece is unframed. I've discreetly initialed the artwork lower right corner. Signed, dated, titled and description on back of panel. An old almost forgotten cemetery near the NJ coastline. While exploring the area one hot summer afternoon we came upon this graveyard near the side of the road. It was odd because it was nestled in between the neighborhood houses. The houses were old but the cemetery was even older. Taking time to explore and wander through the headstones was like a time capsule. Ship captains and crew alike were buried here, their fate outlined on their headstones. The sun was so hot and the shade so deep, I named this Deep Shade. Thanks so much for looking.
Drummond Hill Cemetery is a nationally recognized heritage site. It is most famously known as the battle grounds of the "Battle of Lundy's Lane", as well as the burial site of Laura Secord. Christopher Buchner purchased 400 acres of land from his father-in-law, James Forsythe, in 1799 and used the top of the hill as a burial ground. It later became the site of a fierce battle between the British and the Americans in 1814. The area became known as Drummond Hill, in honour of General Drummond. William Dalton's Journals, dating from 1845 to 1916 when he worked as the Sexton for many cemeteries in the area are excellent genealogy resources. Unfortunately, the records do not indicate where the burial is located or even what cemetery the burial took place. Mr Dalton did, however, keep records in chronological order, which usually included some interesting background of the deceased. The Niagara Parks Commission assumed jurisdiction of the Cemetery in 1910 and was then transferred to the City in 1996.
A 1,700-year-old cemetery was discovered in the Chinese city of Kucha, which once formed part of the Silk Road trade routes that connected China to the Roman Empire.
Mount Moriah Cemetery on Mount Moriah in Deadwood, Lawrence County, South Dakota is the burial place of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock, and other notable figures of the Wild West. By tradition, the American flag flies over the cemetery 24 hours a day, rather than merely from sunrise to sunset.
