From her studio in Paris, artist Julie Bergeron hand-builds amorphous stoneware vessels that mimic a wide array of creatures and lifeforms found in nature. Hollow ducts and pointed spines cover the surfaces of the cavernous forms, ambiguously evoking seed pods, tropical fruits like rambutan or durian, and small marine organisms. “I have fun mixing types, blurring the tracks… Are we in the vegetal, animal, microscopic, or human world? The borders become undefined,” she tells Colossal. More

Harnessing the rich, organic textures of soil, stone, and timber, Ukrainian artists Andriy and Olesya Voznicki of Natura Ceramica create voluminous ceramic vessels and sculptures. Based in Amsterdam, the duo draw inspiration from natural phenomena like the changing seasons, patinas and aging, and elements like fire or earth. The pieces mirror the shapes and textures of boulders or lava rock, suggesting both beauty and resiliency and influenced by a concept called bionic design, which mimics characteristics and adaptations in nature. Janice Cormier is a ceramic artist whose practice is informed by a deep connection to the landscape. Her works speaks of time, place, and relationship with the earth. The organic forms and tactile surfaces echo the natural landscape elements from the places she has called Home – Atlantic Canada, Northern California, and Québec. Janice initially studied health and social sciences before developing a strong interest in ceramics. While living in northern California, she honed her skills through self-teaching, mentorships, and workshops with established ceramic artists and sculptors. She has since participated in gallery exhibitions and juried art events in Canada and the United States. Originally from the east coast of New Brunswick, Janice currently crafts her sculptural ceramic works from her small urban studio in Montreal. This one of one sculptural vessel is slowly constructed with coils and slabs of clay. In honouring the origin of the material, this piece highlights the clay body’s natural colour and texture.
About The Artwork My work is organic abstraction, inspired by but not imitating nature. I am interested in how patterns repeat themselves in different scales and materials through out the natural world. This piece is inspired by how things grow or erode in layers. While many designers focus on enhancing the cuteness of small air plants, ceramic artist Gregory Knopp highlights the otherworldly qualities of these popular plants. His hand-built clay vessels feature gaping mouth-like holes surrounded by curling claws or winding appendages that draw attention to the spindly air plants. Knopp, who works under the name Tooth and Snail, explains that he begins each piece with a concept sketch and then develops the work instinctively with clay in hand. More
