There are about 213 species of chameleons in the planet. They're native in Africa, the Middle East, southern India, Sri Lanka and the Mediterranean region of Europe. They have also been introduced into many places where they have established themselves, such as Hawaii. About half of all species occur on the large African island of Madagascar.
