Seven generations of one family have loved Lavericks Bay life, and now visitors can also enjoy the many charms of this secluded sheep farm. Words: Fiona Fraser Photos: Rachael McKenna The weather is a harsh mistress. Sunshine casting a comforting glow over pasture can quickly turn to drought. And a sprinkling of rain to signal that the drought has broken can give way to torrents of water, forcing the earth to crumble beneath its weight. The bronze leopard of Hout Bay was sculptured by Ivan Milford-Barberton. Completed in 1963, it was placed on its pedestal on 14th March that year by the Divisional Council. Pepsi-Cola supported the project and donated the bronze. The sculpture is a memorial to the many wild animals that once roamed the mountains of the peninsula. The last leopard seen in Hout Bay was in 1937 on Little Lion's Head Information: Hout Bay Museum

An unspoilt, picturesque village, with a large fishing harbour. The centre of the snoek industry, and headquarters of the crayfishing fleet. The beach is noted for 'trek' (drag-net) fishing. Wood was one obtained here for many of the buildings in Cape Town. Beach is attractive, but cold for swimming. There are such epic hiking adventures to be had in a single day, almost everywhere you go to be outside. I love the ritual of that early morning, a stuffed daypack and the reality that you have a huge, beautiful day ahead on foot. Not to mention those end-of-the-day, exhausted celebrations where you relive your favorite stretches. From the canyons of Utah, to the mountains of the French Alps, to the famous tramps (hikes) in New Zealand, here are a few of my favorites.
Cape Town and the Cape of Good Hope is an amazing place to visit, With Table Mountain as a backdrop, the Atlantic Ocean at its feet and the Indian Ocean close by, it must be one of the greatest places on Earth.
Tintswalo Atlantic stimulates your senses and massages your soul as you watch a sunset over Sentinel peak, while listening to the waves crash at your feet.
