Today I am trying a new thing inspired from The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden. I have seen this book many times on other blogs. I have taken the inspiration of this naturalist's journal and used it as concept for my tea. I have always wanted to start a garden journal but, I will never sketch it...ever. So, why not use the flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruit from my yard in pictures that create a visual journal that I can keep and take notes on. And, of course while I am pondering all of this I am having tea! The teacup is by Grace's Teaware. What's in my cup? A raspberry leaf tea of course. Here; at the end of June, in my garden I have daisies, roses, zinnias, buddleia, dill, lemon thyme, and wild blackberry. That is just a few of the plants that started blooming at the end of June. Now, I am eager to see what's blooming in July! I thought I would do a post this week with some past St. Patrick's Day teas so you could see more green. This was An Irish Tea. Here, I baked with one of my favorite beers, Guinness. I used to drink alcohol, now I can't with all of my allergies. This was Guinness Cake Tea. This tea was a picture I took in the spring and it shows off that gorgeous spring light coming through the window. In the two above pictures I am cooking with a famous Irish cook Darina Allen in A Tea for March. Happy St. Patrick's Day! I am having a romantic tea this week in the spirit of Valentine's Day. I am serving green tea with some gluten free blueberry banana muffins. Kind of conservative I know, this is the way I splurge! My sweet little teacup is Limoges. My shabby chic teapot is a vintage unmarked teapot I found in an antique shop awhile back. My gluten free heart shaped muffins are a real treat but not too sweet. I will share the recipe tomorrow. I got this gorgeous silver plated tray at the thrift store a few weeks ago for only $8! I was so excited. I had planned to use it for Valentine's Day. Are you planning a sweet treat this week? Do something nice for yourself, someone stuck in the house due to this bitter cold winter, or best of all someone you dearly love! Today I have a treat for you! I had the pleasure of reviewing the new book Tea with Jane Austen by Pen Vogler; food photographer Stephen Conroy. This book, though little in size, packs a lot of baking for delicious tea time treats. The book was inspired by the novels and letters of Jane Austen. In this 64-page book are recipes for cakes and pastries based on authentic recipes from the Regency era which have been updated for the modern cook. The book has 22 recipes in total in which 6 are from Martha Lloyd's Household Book. Martha Lloyd was Jane Austen's dear friend and lived with her many years penning a collection of recipes called Martha Lloyd's Household Book. Some of the recipes included are English Muffins based on the muffins, served with after-dinner tea in Pride and Prejudice, a Buttered Apple Tart as served by Mr. Woodhouse to Miss Bates in Emma, and Jumbles inspired by the cookies enjoyed by Fanny in Mansfield Park. The original recipes are given along with the modified versions. I chose Jane's Sponge Cake to bake today with tea. The book states that the Oxford English Dictionary noted the first recorded use of the word "sponge cake" is by Jane, writing to her sister Cassandra. The recipe is taken from Martha Lloyd's Household Book. The cake is essentially a pound cake. They are often topped with just a dusting of powdered sugar. Mine came out to perfection. I have actually made two other recipes for the traditional tea time sponge cake and they both flopped. This recipe was a winner. Simply topped with fruit and powdered sugar it was a tea time treat befitting a relaxing afternoon spent reading this little treasure of a cookbook. My teacup reminds me of the Regency era. It is by Grace's Teaware. I thoroughly enjoyed the recipe book. Filled with interesting introductions to each recipe and delightful photography. I really loved the addition of adding the original recipes in their handwritten form. I always love reading historical recipes. I am a history nerd. I highly recommend this book for any tea lover, but if you are also a fan of Jane Austen it is a must read! I know a lot of you tea lovers are also Jane Austen fans, like me. It would make a perfect Mother's Day gift! I wish to thank Sara and Neha for the opportunity to review Tea with Jane Austen by Pen Vogler; published by Ryland Peters & Small, and CICO Books Inc ($14.95). They provided me with a copy of the book. The review and opinions were entirely my own. Jesus was here before the creation of the world. In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created,[a] and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.[b] Jesus is the creator, because he is God. God sent a man, John the Baptist,[c] 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. 14 So the Word became human[d] and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.[e] And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. 15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’” 16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.[f] 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God,[g] is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us. Before John the Baptist, there hadn't been a prophet in Israel for around 500 years. John came as a prophet of God to introduce Jesus. The Testimony of John the Baptist 19 This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants[h] from Jerusalem to ask John, “Who are you?” 20 He came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “No,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet we are expecting?”[i] “No.” 22 “Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?” 23 John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the Lord’s coming!’”[j] 24 Then the Pharisees who had been sent 25 asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?” 26 John told them, “I baptize with[k] water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. 27 Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.” 28 This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. Jesus, the Lamb of God 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’ 31 I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him. 33 I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.[l]” John 1:1-34 There is only one true and living God and this is Jesus. But the Lord is the only true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King! Have you all been able to tell I have become enamored with tea? I have. I always knew I liked it but, I really like it! I had a bag of lemons from the grocery and wanted to try a lemony dessert. I tried two lemon cakes the day I made this and one was a English recipe. The English recipe didn't turn out for me so I came up with a recipe I knew would work and that is Ina Garten's Lemon Pound Cake. I will share the recipe tomorrow. This sweet little teacup was made by Gracie's China. Having a refreshing pot of tea with a lemon cake for a new spring day. Such a lovely way to begin the season! Those loyal vehicles of the captivating tea beveridge are under scrutiny again for their tendency to be audacious, bold and innovative products of the unbridled imagination. Their bemusing evolution has led to forms flowing from the incongruitive to the sublimely harmonious, which showcase unconventional shapes, imagery and clever abstractions of the clay while fulfilling a need to command attention at the table. Teapots have morphed from being functional objects for the creation of a cuppa to charming utilitarian pieces of amusement and even serious sculptural statements As they are the centre of attention several times a day and much loved for their role in tea making,
