The Livestock Specialist Zimbabwe - 7 TYPES OF CHICKEN DROPPINGS & WHAT THEY MEAN FOR YOUR POULTRY FLOCK🚨 (A Must-Know for Every Poultry Farmer!) One of the easiest yet most overlooked ways to monitor your chickens’ health is by observing their droppings! While it may not be the most appealing task, checking the color, texture, and consistency of chicken poo can help you detect diseases early and prevent outbreaks in your flock. Let’s break down 7 common types of chicken poop and what they mean: ✅ 1. Normal Chicken Poop – Healthy & Balanced A normal chicken dropping is typically brown and firm, with white urates (which is the bird’s version of urine). Sometimes, it may appear slightly green or yellow, depending on the feed. If your chickens are active and eating well, this is a good sign! 🟢 2. Green Poop – Diet or Disease? Green droppings can mean your chickens are eating a lot of greens, grass, or vegetables—which is normal. 🚨 BUT if your flock isn’t on a free-range diet, green droppings could indicate Marek’s disease, Newcastle disease, or internal parasites. 🟡 3. Yellow & Foamy Poop – Coccidiosis Alert! Yellow, runny, or foamy droppings can be an early warning sign of coccidiosis, fowl typhoid, or kidney issues. ⚫ 4. Black Poop – Possible Internal Bleeding If droppings appear black or tarry, your chickens may have internal bleeding in their digestive tract. ⚪ 5. White or Milky Poop – Three Possible Causes White, milky, or chalky droppings may indicate: 1️⃣ Internal worms 🪱 2️⃣ Pullorum disease (a bacterial infection) 3️⃣ Gumboro disease (a deadly viral infection) 💊If it’s Gumboro (Infectious Bursal Disease), act fast! Vaccination is key. 🩸 6. Bloody Poop – Coccidiosis Warning! Blood in chicken droppings is a major sign of coccidiosis, a parasitic disease that damages the intestines and reduces appetite. If left untreated, it can be fatal. 🟠 7. Orange Poop – Normal Intestinal Shedding Orange poop can sometimes be mistaken for blood, but it’s usually just the shedding of intestinal lining, which is normal! 🚨 BUT if the orange poop is mixed with blood, it could indicate intestinal issues that need attention. 🐓 FINAL TIP: Many of the diseases mentioned above—coccidiosis, bacterial infections, and digestive issues—can be prevented and managed naturally with Pruex Boost. Pruex Boost is a powerful probiotic solution that helps balance the gut microbiome, fights harmful bacteria, and strengthens your chickens’ immune system.
