My absolutely favorite artist for Chinoiserie art for the home is Harrison Howard. He has very recently added some new works to his Chinoiseries collection. These are some of my favorites ever. Available in the original watercolor and in limited edition giclee prints that are extraordinarily beautiful, one or a pair of these would be an incredible focal point for an entryway, dining room, living room, or bedroom. His work is a favorite of top interior designers. Click here to see his entire portfolio and be sure not to miss his new pieces under Gardens and For Children as well. Mr. Howard's art is the epitome of Chinoiserie-whimsical, elegant, sophisticated, and joyful.

Chinoiserie is a sophisticated style, merging Asian and European patterns, fabrics and textures to create a luscious look… Think bright, bold jewel tones, elaborate patterns including toile, rich silks and satins, opulent, antique furniture from cabinets to lamps, and accessories made with exquisite porcelain china, and carved woods, wicker and bamboo. Chinoiserie wallpaper and […]
My favorite painter of Chinoiserie scenes, Harrison Howard, has just updated his site with new works including one of my favorites, "The Architect", which is seen above. Harrison's paintings and prints are like instant mood lifters to me. How can one not be charmed by scenes with books, curtains, trellis, pagodas, butterflies, and coral? Not to mention those hard working figures who are busy painting, arranging curtains, and crab baiting. And I thought blogging kept me busy! I've included a sampling of Harrison's work, but do visit his website to see more Chinoiserie scenes. "The Two Gardeners" "Bibliophile" "The Dowry" "Crab Baiting" "Arranging Drapery"

The Pink Pagoda The Pink Pagoda posted the other day about this fabulous set of ginger jar giclees a customer had her color in navy and orange. Orange continues to be very hot in interior design, but I feel that pairing it with turquoise is a little over and that pairing navy with orange will be coming on strong. Here is more inspiration. The Pink Pagoda can custom color any of her prints for you. I think you all know by now that I have a penchant for all things Chinoiserie..... I recently was asked to embellish a small powder room done in Gracie paper. The trim and door were white and competed with the scene. I based coated everything in a high green. Gracie wallpaper is very complex with layers of subtle washes of color for their backgrounds. I used three to four washes to make the design seamless. Details were extended into the moulding to complete the scene...now, on to the door! I based the door and then began the layers of washes....all straight acrylic paint thinned with water and wiped back. No glaze. The layers gave a soft patina of age and depth. Accents of corals were added to the edges and bevels... A main element of ornament was added to the top panel with small accents in the lower panels... A bird cage of bamboo was added with songbird and foliage...colors were a traditional palette..cadmium yellow, burnt sienna, raw sienna, burnt umber, alizarin crimson and bone black The client designed the birdcage with thatched roof and bamboo design. This is a teeny room under the staircase and hard to shoot an interior shot with a camera! It's always about the details...there are no shortcuts. I can't wait to see the room with the sconces and mirror hung! It was a lovely project to be involved in.

Art . Illustration . Design . Inspiration
I certainly do not need any reminders that Chinoiserie is my favorite style. Still, I couldn't help but notice that it has been on my mind more often than usual. Just in the last week I've been thinking about these items: My new black linen hand towels with a coral, Chinois monogram on them. I can't wait to use these at my next party. (Hand towels from Gramercy Fine Linen. This great linen shop is a block up the street from my home...meaning I will be getting into a lot of linen trouble.) While flipping through a circa 1980 magazine, I found this old Tiffany ad. I wonder if they still produce this clock? If not, they really should. I'm considering buying a copy of Cecil Beaton's Chinese Album, mainly for the dust jacket. And because what I just wrote makes me feel guilty, I will end up reading the book too. And, I was checking out Charlotte Moss' "Virginia" AirEssence Diffuser. Why? Because her "Virginia" fragrance smells divine; I love the decanter with the Chinoiserie pagoda stopper on it; and, I think I'm the only person in the world who has not yet tried one of these stick diffuser systems! Interior design and the best of everything that inspires me.

The Chinese House has the shape of a trefoil. The rounded central building contains three cabinet rooms regularly interspersed with free spaces. Rounded windows and French windows that reach almost to the ground let light into the pavilion's interior. The rolling tented copper ceiling is supported in the free space by four gilded sandstone columns, the work of the Swiss ornamental sculptor Johann Melchior Kambly, who was in the employ of Frederick the Great from 1746. The gilded sandstone sculptures that sit at the feet of the columns and stand at the walls of the rooms originate from the workshops of the sculptors Johann Gottlieb Feymüller and Johann Peter Benckert. People from the area stood as models for the eating, drinking and music-making Chinese figures, which explains the statues' European features.
