Then sew 1/4" away from each side of drawn line. Cut on drawn line and press final seam open to reduce bulk. See the instructions below for how to square a Quarter Square Triangle. We want to square this unit to 4 1/2". I placed a small piece of tape on the spot of my ruler where the 2 2 1/4" lines intersect. Place the 2 1/4" mark on the very center of the unit and make sure the diagonal line on the ruler runs along the diagonal seam. Trim the right and top seams. Rotate the square so the trimmed corner is now on the bottom left. Place your 2 1/4" mark on the center again but also make sure the 4 1/2" marks on the right bottom and top left are at the points of the triangles along the edge. Trim right side and top. Assemble Block: Layout units as shown and sew together in 3 rows. Press seams in rows 1 and 3 to the outside and seams in row 2 to the inside. Sew rows together and press final seams open to reduce bulk. Square to 12 1/2".

75 Fun Fat Quarter Quilts An exciting new book has just been released. It is called 75 Fun Fat Quarter Quilts and many designers have written chapters and I am happy to be one of them. My chapter is called One Simple Block because all the quilts are made from, yes, you guessed it, one simple block, The Contrary Wife. The quilt shown above is called Au Contraire. This quilt started with this sweet fat quarter bundle because remember, this book is about quilts that can be made from fat quarters. And all the quilts in my chapter are so easy to make because the blocks are made from 4 half square triangles and 5 squares and you sew them into a simple 9-patch block. What makes this chapter so interesting is the eight quilts that I designed all look so different by changing the colors or changing the way the block was placed in the quilts. And just to get you a bit more excited, I'm going to give you a sneak peek at the quilts. This is Falling Leaves, a great Fall themed quilt but you could use the same idea with any fat quarter bundle that you may love and it would look beautiful. This is Chain Link, a completely different look using white, red and black fabric. This color grouping is the favorite of my daughter Katie Rose so I have lots of these fabrics in my stash. This is Big Red, those of you that know me know I love stars in quilts, they are such a traditional, iconic look. But this quilt looks bold and modern by using bright, bold colors. This quilt is called Magnificent Valour, I thought it would be perfect for those of you that make all of those wonderful Quilts of Valor. This is Ups and Downs, as you can see, again, I have lots of red, black and white in my stash. I think this would also be great if you did each row in a different color. This is Garden Paths, it reminded me of a show garden with lots of flower beds surrounded by grassy paths that meet with a fountain at the intersections. This is Candy Garland, I thought of strings of wrapped candies when I designed this one. It would also be fun in Christmas fabrics. And this is just one of many, many chapters from all sorts of talented designers. So there you have it, just a snippet of the chapter I wrote, after all, we want you to run out and buy the book so you can see the full designs for yourself. And remember, this is all from One Simple Block! To win a free copy of this book* please leave a comment on this blog post, let me know which of the quilts in my chapter is your favorite or you can just say hi! Remember to include your email address with your comment so I can reach the lucky winner. On Wednesday, December 23 I will select a winner using a random number generator. *If your address is in the United States you will receive a hard copy of the book. A winner from outside the US will receive a free e-book version. So many people can get to know about this new book we are having a blog tour. Stop by these other sites to see what some of the other designers have to say about their chapters. There are still a few more days of the tour! 12/14 C&T Publishing blog 12/15 Jera Brandvig 12/16 Melissa Cory 12/17 Kate Colleran 12/18 Sue Pfau 12/19 Tiffany Jenkins 12/20 Ellen Murphy 12/21 Amanda Castor 12/22 Jo Kramer All the best! ~ Ellen Update! Redbud 2012 Block of the Month ~ August Hi! If you enjoy this blog, please become a follower, I need to know if anyone is out there using these tutorials! And pop on over to the American Homestead blog and see what is going on in my life. All the best! ~ Ellen http://americanhomestead.blogspot.com This is the August Block of the Month for the Redbud Quilt Guild in Anderson, IN. There were no instructions given for this block, we were to get the pattern from a book. I do not own the book and we can't copy from the book so this is the way I made my block. The block is based on the Squares and Triangles Block from the KC Star. Fabric Requirements: Fabric A: White: 4 - 3 1/2" squares 2 - 4 1/4" squares - Mark a diagonal line on back. Fabric B: Red: 2 - 4 1/4" squares Fabric C: Blue 4 - 3 7/8" squares - Mark a diagonal line on back. 4 - 3 1/2" squares - Mark a diagonal line on back. Fabric D: Fussy Cut 1 - 6 1/2" square Make Half Square Triangles Pair Fabric A and Fabric B 4 1/4" squares with right sides together. Sew 1/4" away from each side of drawn line. Cut on drawn line and press seam to the darker fabric. Place Fabric C 3 7/8" square on top of the half square triangles, with right sides together as shown, be sure the drawn line on the Fabric C square is placed as shown. Sew 1/4" away from each side of drawn line. Cut on drawn line and press seam to the Fabric C. To square, place diagonal line on ruler on top of the diagonal seam on square, place the 1 3/4" intersection on the ruler on the center of the block and square on top and right side. Rotate block and square the other 2 sides so the block measures 3 1/2". You will end up with 4 blocks shown on the left and 4 shown on the right. Layout as shown and sew together. Press seam open to reduce bulk. Square to 3 1/2" x 6 1/2". Make 4. Make Center Block: Place a Fabric C 3 1/2" square on the top right corner of Fabric D 6 1/2" square as shown and sew a thread width above the drawn line. Press the seam to the corner. Trim back 2 layers of fabric to 1/4". Repeat to the opposite corner. Repeat above procedure to the remaining 2 corners and square to 6 1/2". Assemble Block: Layout units as shown as sew together in 3 rows. Press seams in rows 1 & 3 to the outside and seams in row 2 to the inside. Sew rows together and press final seams open to reduce bulk. Square to 12 1/2".
Hi! If you enjoy this blog, please become a follower, I need to know if anyone is out there using these tutorials! And pop on over to the American Homestead blog and see what is going on in my life. All the best! ~ Ellen http://americanhomestead.blogspot.com Since the Disappearing 9-patch tutorial has been so popular, here is another option using a 4-patch block. Fabric Requirements: Fabric A: White 2 - 7 1/2" squares Fabric B: Pink 1 - 7 1/2" square Fabric C: Green 1 - 7 1/2" square Layout squares as shown and sew together in 2 rows, press seams to the dark fabrics. Sew rows together and press seam open to reduce bulk. Make a cut 5 1/2" in from each side of the block. Now this is where the magic happens. Our 4-patch has now become a 9-patch. Take the left center unit and swap it with the right center unit, then take the top center unit and swap it with the bottom center unit. Then sew together in 3 rows. Press seams in rows 1 and 3 to the inside and seams in row 2 to the outside. Sew rows together and press seams to the outside. I made the original squares large enough so you have plenty of room to square up at the end. With sewing, cutting and sewing back together, you want your finished block to be as accurate as possible. Using a 12 1/2" square ruler, place the 6 1/4" lines on the center seams, both vertical & horizontal and trim top and right sides. Now turn the block and square 2 remaining sides to 12 1/2". Quick & easy! This is how it looks if you put the blocks side by side. By rotating every other block you have this design. I think it would look great as a scrappy quilt.

Hi! If you enjoy this blog, please become a follower, I need to know if anyone is out there using these tutorials! And pop on over to the American Homestead blog and see what is going on in my life. All the best! ~ Ellen http://americanhomestead.blogspot.com This was first published by Nancy Cabot on May 3, 1938 and yet, I think this would make a very modern quilt. Fabric Requirements: Fabric A: Cream 4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles Fabric B: Green 4 - 2 1/2" squares 1 - 4 1/2" square Fabric C: Red 4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles Fabric D: Blue 4 - 2 1/2" squares 4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles Make Corner Units: Layout Fabric D and Fabric B 2 1/2" squares as shown and sew together. Press seam to the Fabric D. Then layout above unit and Fabric D rectangles as shown and sew together. Press seam to the rectangle. Square to 4 1/2". Make 4. Make Outer Center Units: Layout Fabric C and Fabric A rectangles as shown and sew together. Press seam to the Fabric A. Square to 4 1/2". Make 4. Assemble Block: Layout units as shown and sew together in 3 rows. Press seams in rows 1 & 3 to the outside and seams in row 2 to the inside. Sew rows together and press final seams open to reduce bulk. Square to 12 1/2". Note: If you follow all the pressing directions, your seams will "lock" together so you will have crisp & precise intersections. This is what your quilt would look like if you set the same blocks together. This is what it would look like if you were to alternate the blues and reds in each block. This is what you get by making the corners 4-patches and adding a gold square in the corners. Ps. I need to know you are out there ~ please become a follower on this blog.

When Kathleen Loomis sat down to write her book about designing quilts she must have had a lot of fun because this book is chock-a-block full of hints and happiness. She has taken a simple traditional block, the Rail Fence block, and turned it on its ear. Never will you see so many variations of str
