El Alto sirve principalmente de establecimiento para inmigrantes del resto del país, en especial recién llegados de las áreas rurales quienes buscan una oportunidad en "la ciudad".Los principales inmigrantes que viven en esta ciudad provienen de los sectores rurales de los departamentos del occidente boliviano (La Paz, Oruro y Potosí.Debido a este factor migratorio, la ciudad del El Alto (que cuenta con su propia municipalidad) se considera una urbe moderna, de casas nuevas y pobres.
