Find lots of EASY quilt block tutorials that are perfect for beginners. These blocks might look hard to make, but they're perfect for the new quilter.
Hello everyone - I'm just popping in quickly today to share a little quilt block that I stitched up this week. I made this sweet little block for the Vintage Christmas Sew Along with the Fat Quarter Shop. The name of the block is "Under the Tree" and it's such a cute little present! I shared my first sew along block a few weeks ago (see the post here). The pattern for both the first block and this one are both from the Vintage Christmas book by Lori Holt. What is it about little blocks that make them so irresistible? This block measures 6.5" square, but the book also has instructions to make a 12.5" block as well. To read more about this fun book and to see photos from inside, check out this post. And you can find the Vintage Christmas book here from The Fat Quarter Shop. Happy sewing everyone! --Andy
Finished projects: 1) Rainbow Quilt (full post here) -- still completely in love with this one! 2) Asterisk Quilt -- just finished the binding this week. I'll post more about this one soon! In progress: 1) Did you see Lee's finished quilt using this block? I was so happy to see that she decided to post the paper-piecing pattern! I plan to make a bunch of these with my Flea Market Fancy stash. I have been so undecided about what to do with my FMF fabrics; but this is the perfect pattern! 2) This is the block I chose for this month for my do. Good Stitches circle. Isn't it fun, and bright?! (Tutorial at In Color Order) 3) Nearing the end of making these Vintage Holiday blocks. Just need to get them sashed and all put together. But I'm feeling the need to organize my sewing room first, do it might be awhile!!! It's been so long since I've linked up to WIP Wed -- but it's good to be back!
Earlier this month I shared my new Banded Stars pattern with you. The response to Banded Stars on social media has been terrific. It makes me happy that so many of you were drawn to that classic, t…
Hey Everyone, Here is the tutorial for the tree block from Brooke (her's is putting together either the table runner or the bedrunner). Here is Sally's Bedrunner which she has finished (over achiever). Here is my tutorial since I had to be difficult and make the lap size :) Lap Size Tree Tutorial (pdf) Cut your biggest pieces first and then use the strips to cut the next pieces. This is written as if you are using 3 green fabrics but you can use whatever you like as long as you can get all of the pieces cut. Be sure to keep your left overs you will need them for the inner tree part of the pattern that is later in this tutorial. Mark your pieces with the corresponding letter which is noted after the measurements in the cutting directions and diagrammed on the block below Cutting For Tree Block: (10”x 20”) From 2 green fabrics cut one 7” strip Subcut: 2 – 7” squares (one from each) if you don’t mind your points on each block of your tree being the same you could economize by just cutting one of these (A) 2 – 6 ½ squares (one from each)(B) From remaining green fabric cut one 6” strip Subcut: 2 – 6” squares (from the new fabric and one from one of the other two 7” strips you already have) if you don’t mind your points on each block of your tree being the same you could economize by just cutting one of these (C) 2 – 5 ½” by 3 ½” rectangles (again from 2 different fabrics)(D) 2 – 5” squares (from 2 fabrics) if you don’t mind your points on each block of your tree being the same you could economize by just cutting one of these(E) 2 – 4 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles (from 2 fabrics) (F) 2 - 4” squares (from 2 fabrics) if you don’t mind your points on each block of your tree being the same you could economize by just cutting one of these (G) 2 – 3 ½” x 1 ½” rectangles (from 2 fabrics) (H) 2 – 3” squares (from 2 fabrics) if you don’t mind your points on each block of your tree being the same you could economize by just cutting one of these (I) From Background Fabric: Cut one 7” strip Subcut: 2 – 7” squares (or one see above) (A) 2 – 6” squares (or one as above)(C) 2 – 5 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles (J) 2 – 5” squares (or one as above) (E) 2 – 4 ½” squares (K) 2 – 4” squares (or one as above)(G) 2 – 6 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles (L) 2 - 8 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles (M) 2 – 3” squares (or one as above) (I) Instructions: From your 7”, 6”, 5”, 4”, 3” squares make half square triangles as we have been doing in the last two blocks. Marking diagonally on the background squares and sewing down each side of the line, cutting apart on the line. Square to 6 ½”, 5 ½”, 4 ½”, 3 ½”, and 2 ½”. Piece the rectangles in as you see above on the block diagram. You will need two blocks just like you see them. The easiest way to do this is lay the pieces all out so you can see the picture then piece them in rows. This block will come out 10.5” x 20.5” unfinished. Inner Tree Block You will need to piece one more block from your green fabrics. You can piece this any way you like as long as it comes out 10.5” by 20.5” unfinished. Here are two different ways you can make it. These are basically to show you that you can do this any way you like. It looks good any way. And here is a graphic of how the whole quilt goes together again. As you can see the bottom row has the inner tree. And I show a version with either piecings of the inner block. it looks fine both ways so, go easy I say :) We will have another post next week about finishing with the border.

Hello and welcome back! Hopefully you have your fabric all cut and ready and are prepared to start sewing your First Snow blocks! I love it when the cutting is done and it's time to start stitching away. I am excited about some of the fabric pulls you guys have shared on #firstsnowquilt, there are going to be some good ones! This week we are sewing 2 blocks! I added some video highlights about pressing on Instagram. (Highlights are the circles below my information on Instagram, if you click on them it will take you to the videos, which you can skip through or return to by tapping on the right of left sides of the screen. You can also hold a finger down anywhere to pause it!) Basically, pressing is more of a personal preference on this one. This week's winner is Amy @eamylove! Please send me your address to claim your package of Riley Blake goodies. Remember that the only way to enter to win participation prizes is to post your progress photos on Instagram with the hashtag #firstsnowquilt. If you're unsure how to do that, you can always use Google or YouTube to watch how-to videos, or ask any person you know between the ages of 15 and 30. They will be able to help you out for sure :) Next week is the same assignment- two more blocks! I'll see you back here on the blog in two weeks with 4 blocks total, and another prize (fabric bundle from Starlit Quilts!) and update. If you have any questions let me know. I had some trouble last week with Blogger not letting me respond to comments, but I will do my best!

Twinkling Star Quilt Block
I completely love this 10 Minute Block. It’s so quick and easy. Unfortunately I don't know the origin of this block. A fellow quilter introduced me to it and I enjoy passing on the method. To make the block you will need 2 x 10” squares of contrasting fabric. As Christmas is coming I have used Christmas fabric so you can see how easy it is to make place mats and table centres for your Christmas table setting, or a quick and easy gift for a friend. HOW T

In this email you will have a unique URL link to click on which will lead you back to our website and the following screen: Click on the words "Download Now" so that a little window pops up for you to select whether you want to open it as a PDF or save it to your computer. Be patient with your first attempt - the file is large, so it may take a few moments to load the PDF depending on your ISP connection speed. Once the window pops up you can select either option of whether to "Open" or "Save". If saving it, just be sure to make a note of where you are saving it on your computer so you can retrieve it later. If you click on your download link and a web browser appears but only presents you with a white screen or downloading doesn't appear to take place, most likely there is an incompatibility between the web browser you are using, your system software, and the way our website serves files. First try switching to a different web browser. (For example, if you are using Internet Explorer, try starting the download with Firefox instead. We have found that Firefox works very well!)However, if switching browsers does not work for you, try downloading it from your laptop or desktop computer rather than an iPad or mobile device. This usually solves the issue as the iPad tends to hide downloaded files in odd places and requires a reader app to open it (Adobe Reader App or Kindle App are free). If all else fails, you can forward your email link to a friend or local copy center business to have them download and print it for you. Digital Policy Details This digital product policy is designed to help you understand our commitment to you but also remind you of your responsibilities when you purchase digital products from The Featherweight Shop. If you have a registered account with our website, then your order history is provided once you login to your account. You can then download any digital product or pattern purchases at any time in the future using your order history. If you do not have a registered account, then please know that it is your responsibility to promptly download and save the file you purchased to your computer. Once you have downloaded and saved your item, safeguarding it is up to you. Be sure to back up your files, because it is not a matter of "if", but "when" your files will be lost. Carbonite, Backblaze or other backup file system is highly recommended. You set it up and never have to worry again. However, if you ever need to recover your lost files, these backup programs are a life saver!
